In Windows 11, the desktop is the main workspace that appears after you sign in. It is more than the wallpaper or the icons: it is the area where you can access items and organize your work, alongside the taskbar and Start menu. Windows 11 also lets you create multiple desktops for separate groups of apps.
What does “desktop” mean in Windows 11?
The desktop is the workspace for apps, files, and tools. Its background is the visual area behind any icons, while the icons themselves are optional shortcuts. You can use the workspace to reach items and arrange open work; the wallpaper alone is not the desktop.
How the desktop, taskbar, and Start menu differ

The taskbar and desktop are related but separate parts of the Windows interface. The taskbar can include Start, search, Task View, applications, and the system tray. Quick Settings controls—such as network, sound, brightness, and accessibility—are available from the taskbar area or by keyboard shortcut. Start includes search, pinned apps, recommendations, all apps, and account options; a mobile-device companion may appear depending on configuration.

Background
The background is the image or color behind desktop items, and you can personalize it.

Icons and shortcuts
Desktop icons are shortcuts to apps, files, or folders. Recycle Bin is included by default; other standard icons can be selected in Desktop icon settings. Icons can be resized or hidden without removing the items they represent.
Taskbar and Start
The taskbar provides access to apps and system functions, while Start helps you find and launch items. Both are customizable: for example, you can pin or unpin apps and change some taskbar options. Available layout choices can vary with Windows 11 updates.

How to add or hide desktop icons
Create a shortcut to a file or folder
- Open File Explorer and locate the file or folder.
- Open its context menu, then choose Send to > Desktop (create shortcut).
Resize or hide icons
- To resize icons, right-click an empty area of the desktop and use View.
- To hide icons, right-click an empty area and choose View > Show desktop icons. Choose the same option again to show them.
What are multiple desktops?
Windows 11 supports multiple virtual desktops: separate work areas that can hold different groups of open apps or content. For instance, you might keep one group of apps in a work desktop and another in a personal desktop, then switch between them. These are organizational workspaces—not additional physical monitors or computers.

- Press Windows key + Tab to open Task View and manage desktops.
- Press Windows key + Ctrl + D to create a virtual desktop.
Which part should you use?
- Use the desktop to keep shortcuts visible and arrange your workspace.
- Use Start when you need to find or launch an app, or reach settings and files.
- Use the taskbar to return to pinned or open apps, switch windows, and access system controls.
- Use multiple desktops when separate groups of open apps would make your work easier to organize.
