You can start with Silent Hill: Townfall without playing an earlier game. Konami describes it as a self-contained story, and PlayStation’s official launch coverage explicitly welcomes newcomers to the series. Earlier entries may help you recognize the franchise’s psychological-horror traditions, but they are not required background for understanding Townfall.

Released on September 24, 2026, Townfall follows Simon Ordell, an outsider who washes ashore on the icy marina of St. Amelia, a remote Scottish island. Its first-person viewpoint, pocket CRTV device, and flexible approach to encounters make it a distinct entry rather than a prerequisite-driven continuation.

Do you need to play earlier Silent Hill games first?

No. Silent Hill: Townfall is designed as a self-contained entry. You do not need the original Silent Hill, Silent Hill 2, Silent Hill 3, Silent Hill 4: The Room, or another installment to follow Simon Ordell’s situation.

The official material does not identify Townfall as a direct continuation of an earlier protagonist’s story, nor does it establish a required game order. It uses the series’ psychological-horror tradition while introducing a new protagonist, a new location, and a different presentation. Any references or thematic echoes are best treated as additional context, not homework.

What earlier games can add

Playing older entries first can familiarize you with the franchise’s use of oppressive atmosphere, unreliable perception, environmental storytelling, and symbolic horror. That familiarity may help you understand why Townfall’s fog, silence, fragmented memories, and unusual signals feel recognizably connected to Silent Hill. It will not unlock a necessary explanation of the central plot.

What the first-person approach means for expectations

Townfall is the first full-length game in the series presented entirely from a first-person perspective. Do not approach it expecting the camera, pacing, or spatial awareness of the earlier third-person games. The perspective is part of how the game delivers information and vulnerability, not merely a visual change.

The spoiler-light premise

You play as Simon Ordell, an outsider who washes ashore on the icy marina of St. Amelia, a remote island off Scotland. The island is fogbound and largely silent, with the remains of its community surrounding Simon as he tries to understand where he is and what happened.

Simon begins with an IV bag and a medical wristband bearing his name. A pocket CRTV delivers voices and other signals, creating an uneasy connection between Simon and the island. These details establish the mystery without resolving it: the game expects you to interpret fragments, investigate spaces, and decide how much confidence to place in what the device shows you.

  • Hinako must navigate the twisted paths of Ebisugaoka, solving complex puzzles and confronting grotesque monsters to survive
  • Embrace the beauty hidden within terror, or succumb to the madness that lies ahead
  • Discover a new chapter in the SILENT HILL series, blending psychological horror with a haunting Japanese setting

St. Amelia’s Scottish setting is a meaningful change from the locations associated with earlier games. The island’s marina, abandoned community, and harsh weather provide the immediate context; the official descriptions do not establish that Townfall takes place in or directly continues the story of a previous Silent Hill protagonist.

How Townfall’s gameplay differs from series expectations

First-person exploration

The first-person camera puts Simon’s immediate field of view at the center of navigation and discovery. You inspect rooms and outdoor areas from his perspective, read the environment at close range, and use equipment without an over-the-shoulder view. Jon McKellan, writer and director at Screen Burn Interactive, said, “The CRTV couldn’t work from any other perspective.”

This design can make an ordinary object, doorway, or movement in the fog feel important because the game controls exactly what you can see at any moment. It also means that assumptions based on the camera handling of older entries may not transfer directly.

The CRTV is a survival tool

The CRTV is a pocket television that extends the series’ familiar radio concept. Instead of supplying only audio warnings, it receives visual signals as well. Depending on the situation, it can:

Silent Hill Townfall - Day One Edition - PS5
  • Day One Edition Bonus: CRTV Style: Rusted, CRTV Style: Beach Edition
  • Returning to an island town to ‘put things right’, Simon Ordell descends into a world of tense evasion, explosive confrontations, and mind-bending puzzles that slowly surface the truth of St. Amelia
  • Simon Ordell is called back to the island of St. Amelia to ‘put things right’, encountering a town lying quiet beneath a heavy fog, seemingly abandoned but not at rest
  • Venturing deeper, and driven to understand his connection to the place and its inhabitants, Simon begins to discover fragments of a past rising to the surface
  • Experienced entirely in first person, Simon must explore, evade, and survive using a limited set of weapons and tools, including the CRTV, a pocket television used to tune into unstable signals. Evasion is tense; combat is frenetic, while narrative driven puzzles reveal a truth that refuses to stay submerged
  • Help you detect or locate nearby threats.
  • Reveal story information through its signals.
  • Support navigation when the island becomes difficult to read.
  • Contribute to puzzles and other challenges.

It is therefore a gameplay system, not just a prop that decorates Simon’s inventory. Using it can provide information you need, but relying on it also creates uncertainty. McKellan described the goal this way: “We wanted to create a situation where players have to rely on this device to survive, even while feeling uneasy about relying on it too much.”

Puzzles are part of the narrative

Townfall’s puzzles are designed as part of the story rather than as unrelated locks placed between action scenes. Search environments carefully, connect clues to the spaces where you find them, and treat a puzzle’s presentation as potentially meaningful. The official descriptions do not provide a complete puzzle list, so there is no reliable universal order or solution path to memorize before playing.

Encounters offer more than one approach

Depending on the encounter, you may evade a threat, use stealth, or fight. These are options that vary with the situation; combat is not established as the only solution, and stealth is not mandatory for every encounter.

  • Evasion: Create distance or move away when confrontation is unnecessary or unsafe.
  • Stealth: Use positioning and awareness to avoid drawing attention.
  • Combat: Fight when an encounter makes it practical or unavoidable.

Because the game combines environmental investigation with threat management, the sensible choice can change from one encounter to the next. Do not assume that spending resources to defeat everything is always the intended route.

Controls and platform-specific features

Townfall released on PlayStation 5, Steam, and the Epic Games Store on September 24, 2026. The following details are specifically described for the PS5 version and should not be read as requirements for every platform.

Feature PS5 description What it means for you
Adaptive triggers Developers describe them conveying the feel of firearms. Trigger resistance can add physical feedback when using a weapon.
Haptic feedback Developers describe haptics for approaching creature footsteps. Controller vibration can communicate danger before you see it.
Motion controls Used for aiming, map handling, and some CRTV puzzles. Motion input may supplement conventional controls in selected tasks.

A DualSense controller is an optional accessory for the PS5 experience, not a stated requirement for Townfall on every platform. The release announcement confirms PS5 and the two PC storefronts, but it does not establish whether a boxed PS5 edition is available. If you want a physical copy, verify a current retailer listing and confirm whether it is a disc edition or a digital code before buying.

How the endings work

Your actions across the playthrough influence the outcome rather than a single binary decision at the end. Series producer Motoi Okamoto states: “All three main endings can be reached right from your first playthrough, whereas the secret ending becomes accessible after clearing the game once.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That structure has two practical consequences:

  1. You do not need to finish the game once before the three main endings are possible.
  2. The secret ending is gated by completing the game at least once.

The official explanation does not provide a spoiler-free checklist of every action that determines an ending, so guides that claim one universal final choice controls everything should not be treated as established fact. If you want to discover the outcomes naturally, pay attention to decisions and behavior throughout the entire run rather than waiting for a final prompt.

How Townfall connects to the wider series

Shared tradition, separate story

Townfall belongs to Silent Hill’s psychological-horror tradition: isolation, altered perception, environmental clues, and threats that are difficult to interpret at face value. Those are useful expectations. A specific prior game’s plot, protagonist, or ending is not identified as a prerequisite.

A separate first-person development choice

The official PlayStation Blog interview says Townfall and the first-person Silent Hill: The Short Message were developed by different teams on different timelines, with no direct exchange of technical know-how. Their shared first-person perspective was described as coincidental. Townfall’s camera should therefore be understood as Screen Burn Interactive’s own design decision, not evidence that it is a technical sequel to that project.

What you should not assume

  • Townfall is not established as a continuation of a previous protagonist’s personal story.
  • You do not need to identify every historical reference before beginning.
  • A familiar franchise element does not guarantee that its rules or meaning are identical to an older game’s.

A practical first-playthrough plan

If this is your first Silent Hill game, the following approach gives you the useful context without spoiling the mystery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Start Townfall directly. No earlier title is required for the premise.
  2. Inspect the environment. Simon’s condition, the abandoned island, and the spaces around the marina provide information through details rather than exposition alone.
  3. Keep the CRTV available. Its signals can help with threats, navigation, story discovery, and challenges.
  4. Test the encounter you are in. Decide whether evasion, stealth, or combat is appropriate instead of committing to one approach for the whole game.
  5. Record clues mentally or in notes. Puzzles are integrated into the story, so the meaning of an item or location may matter later.
  6. Accept uncertainty. The game is built around fragments of memory and unreliable-feeling information; an unclear signal is part of the experience, not necessarily a missing explanation.
  7. Play once before chasing the secret ending. The secret ending becomes available only after clearing the game, while all three main endings can be reached in the first playthrough.

Who should play earlier games first?

Playing the older games before Townfall is a preference, not a requirement. Consider starting with Townfall if you want:

  • A self-contained story with a new protagonist.
  • A first-person interpretation of Silent Hill’s psychological horror.
  • A Scottish island setting rather than a return to a familiar location.
  • A game that combines exploration, puzzles, evasion, stealth, and combat.

Consider playing earlier entries first only if you specifically want historical context for the franchise’s recurring ideas or to compare how different teams handle atmosphere, perspective, and symbolism. There is no officially stated order that you must complete to understand Simon’s story.

Release facts and franchise context

Konami announced Townfall’s September 24, 2026 release for PlayStation 5, Steam, and the Epic Games Store. Scottish studio Screen Burn Interactive developed the game, and Annapurna Interactive and Konami co-published it.

Konami Digital Entertainment reported more than 17.8 million Silent Hill copies worldwide as of the end of June 2026. That figure includes units shipped, store downloads, and subscription services; it is a franchise-wide count, not Townfall’s sales or revenue.
