A Ryzen 7 5800X3D can deliver gaming performance broadly similar on a supported X370 motherboard and a newer X570 board, based on the comparisons reported to date. That does not mean every X370 board supports the chip, or that every game and configuration will perform identically: check your exact motherboard model and revision, then follow its BIOS support instructions before installing the CPU.

Does the Ryzen 7 5800X3D work on X370?

Sometimes. Support depends on the motherboard manufacturer, exact model and hardware revision, and the BIOS installed. The fact that a particular X370 board can run the processor is not proof that every X370 board can.

For example, ASRock says its X370, B350 and A320 motherboard families support Ryzen 5000 and 4000 processors, including the 5800X3D, with the relevant AGESA firmware. That statement applies to ASRock’s own boards, not to all boards using those chipsets. GIGABYTE’s support page lists the 5800X3D for the GA-AX370-Gaming, revision 1.x, and gives board-specific BIOS information and prerequisites. Check the support page for your own board before buying or installing a processor.

AMD’s AGESA 1.2.0.6b or newer was cited as a requirement for older 300-series platforms in a 2022 product review, but vendor instructions for your exact board take precedence: available BIOS versions, update order and prerequisites can differ. See ASRock’s 300-series CPU support guidance, GIGABYTE’s GA-AX370-Gaming support page, and Tom’s Hardware’s 5800X3D review.

Check compatibility before changing hardware

  1. Identify the exact board. Read the model name and hardware revision printed on the motherboard or shown in its system information. A similar model name may have a different support list.
  2. Open the manufacturer’s CPU support list. Confirm that it specifically names the Ryzen 7 5800X3D for your model and revision.
  3. Read the BIOS notes and update path. Note the minimum BIOS version, any required intermediate updates, and any CPU or firmware prerequisites. Do not assume the latest BIOS can be installed in any order.
  4. Plan how to update it. If the board requires an older working processor for the update, make sure you have access to one. Check the manual for BIOS Flashback or another supported update method rather than assuming the feature is available.
  5. Confirm the update completed before removing the old CPU. Follow the board maker’s steps and verify the installed BIOS version after rebooting.

Will an X370 motherboard bottleneck the 5800X3D in games?

There is no evidence in the cited comparisons of a general gaming penalty simply because a supported board uses X370. A Club386 report on an August 2026 comparison by Linus Tech Tips describes negligible gaming and synthetic benchmark differences between a 2017 X370 system and an X570 system running a Ryzen 7 5800X3D 10th Anniversary Edition with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 Ti. However, the report says memory speed could not be matched between the systems, and it does not provide a dependable set of numerical benchmark deltas. Treat the result as evidence about that comparison, not a universal guarantee. Read Club386’s account of the X370/X570 comparison.

TechSpot’s separate 2022 testing of the 5800X3D across multiple AM4 motherboards also found many results close together, while showing that some workloads and boards can differ. With a Radeon RX 6900 XT and Smart Access Memory enabled, its test setup used four DDR4-3200 modules in a dual-rank, dual-channel CL14 configuration. The results below belong to those tested boards and settings, not to every X370 system.

TechSpot 2022 result What it showed
Multi-core Cinebench A 5% difference between the lowest- and highest-scoring boards.
Photoshop 2022 Board scores were within 1% of one another.
Factorio One Gigabyte Gaming 5 result lagged the Asus X370 boards by approximately 8%.
Watch Dogs: Legion Performance varied by up to 4% among the tested AM4 motherboards.
Death Stranding The game was GPU-limited in this test, and the boards delivered the same performance.

The practical takeaway is not that every board is identical. Rather, the available comparisons suggest that chipset age alone does not predict a meaningful gaming loss; the specific board, game, memory setup and test conditions matter. TechSpot’s 2022 motherboard testing has the individual results and setup details.

What changes when you move from X370 to X570?

The primary case for changing boards is platform connectivity, not a guaranteed increase in frame rates. In the comparison discussed by Club386, X370 provides PCIe Gen 3 while X570 provides PCIe Gen 4. The newer standard can matter for compatible graphics cards and storage devices, including potential SSD transfer speeds, but that difference by itself does not establish a gaming frame-rate improvement with the 5800X3D.

Keeping a working, compatible X370 board can make a CPU-only upgrade simpler. Replacing the board may add newer I/O capabilities, but it means checking the rest of the system’s compatibility and considering the cost of a motherboard swap. No current board prices are established here, so weigh the features you will actually use rather than assuming X570 is required for good 5800X3D gaming.

What to know about the 5800X3D itself

The Ryzen 7 5800X3D is an 8-core, 16-thread AM4 processor with 96 MB of L3 cache and a 105 W TDP, according to Tom’s Hardware. Its 3D V-Cache adds 64 MB of SRAM cache, and its clock speeds are lower than those of the standard Ryzen 7 5800X. The processor does not include a cooler, so make sure your build has a suitable cooling solution.

Tom’s Hardware also reported a $349 announced starting price for the 5800X3D 10th Anniversary Edition, available from June 25, in a 2026 article. That is historical launch information, not a current retailer price or a statement about present availability. Tom’s Hardware’s report on the 10th Anniversary Edition provides that launch context.
