The PS5 Pro does not include a built-in disc drive. Sony sells a detachable Disc Drive for PS5 separately. Once installed and paired with the console, it lets you use PS5 and supported PS4 physical game discs and play 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD movies.
The key decision is whether you already own discs or want disc-based movie playback. The accessory costs extra (Sony’s cited guides do not state a price), requires an internet connection for initial pairing, and must be fitted with the correct PS5 Pro cover and feet.
Does the PS5 Pro have a disc drive?
No. PS5 Pro is a disc-less console as sold. Sony announced a separately available Disc Drive as an option rather than including one in the box. The drive is compatible with PS5 Pro when installed according to Sony’s model-specific instructions.

The table describes Sony’s published compatibility statements. It does not imply that every PS4 game runs on PS5: Sony specifically directs players to check the individual title’s PS5 playability. Sony’s getting-started guide explains the basic disc-game workflow.
Can you play physical PS5 games on PS5 Pro?
Yes, but only after adding the separately sold Disc Drive. Insert a compatible PS5 game disc and the console installs the game automatically, after which you select it from Games home. Sony’s cited instructions establish the installation process; they do not, in the material referenced here, specify the complete disc-presence or license behavior after installation. Follow the on-screen prompts for the particular title.
What about PS4 discs?
The drive supports supported PS4 physical discs. “Supported” matters: backward compatibility is not universal for every PS4 release, so verify the title in Sony’s current compatibility information before buying or relying on a disc. A PS4 disc is not automatically evidence that the game has a PS5 upgrade, enhanced mode, or identical features.

Sony lists three movie formats: 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD. This makes the accessory relevant even if most of your games are digital. The published guidance does not promise support for every regional, copy-protected, or unusual disc variant, so use the format and region information supplied with your movie and console.
What is included—and what is not
- The PS5 Pro console is sold without an internal disc mechanism.
- The official detachable Disc Drive is an additional purchase; it is not included with the standard PS5 Pro package.
- Sony’s cited materials do not provide a verified price, recurring fee, inventory status, or regional promotion. Check the retailer or Sony store serving your country for current commercial details.
- The physical installation uses a supplied cover and long feet intended for the drive-equipped configuration.
Do not assume that a cover or foot set from another PS5 model will fit. Sony’s PS5 Pro setup documentation distinguishes the Pro hardware from older cover sets.
Compatibility details: model groups, covers, and feet
Sony’s setup guide covers the CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 model groups. PS5 Pro belongs to the model group for which the Disc Drive cover and feet are specified. The same guide warns that cover sets made for older CFI-1000 models and slim CFI-2000 consoles are not compatible with PS5 Pro.
That distinction is practical: the drive clips must align with the holes in the console, and the replacement cover and feet complete the external fit. Use the parts supplied for the Pro-compatible drive installation and follow the illustrations in Sony’s Disc Drive setup guide, rather than trying to reuse an older shell.

How to set up a Disc Drive on PS5 Pro
Set aside a clean, soft surface and allow the console to cool before opening the exterior. Sony’s sequence is model-specific; the following is a practical outline, while the linked guide remains the authority for the exact illustration of your hardware.

- Turn off the PS5 Pro completely. Do not work on the console while it is running or in Rest Mode.
- Unplug the power and other cables. Move the console to a stable, soft surface that will not scratch the panels.
- Let the console cool. Handling the covers immediately after use can make the process less comfortable and increases the chance of mishandling hot hardware.
- Remove the model-appropriate feet and cover. Use the PS5 Pro-compatible parts and do not substitute CFI-1000 or slim CFI-2000 cover sets.
- Position the Disc Drive. Align its clips with the matching holes on the console and press until the clips click into place. Do not force a clip that is not aligned.
- Install the supplied cover and long feet. These parts are for the drive-installed configuration and should sit flush when correctly fitted.
- Reconnect the cables and power on. Keep the console on a stable surface with adequate ventilation.
- Connect the console to the internet during first setup. Sony requires an internet connection to pair the drive and console. This is an initial pairing requirement; the cited instructions do not establish a continuing internet requirement for ordinary disc use.
- Insert a game disc to begin installation. Sony says the game installs automatically. When installation finishes, select the title from Games home and follow any on-screen update or account instructions.
If you need the exact panel orientation or clip locations, use the diagrams in Sony’s official setup instructions instead of relying on a generic PS5 teardown video.
Disc Drive versus a disc-less PS5 Pro

Neither choice changes the console’s ability to run digitally obtained games and apps. The difference is access to physical media and the extra hardware process. Because Sony’s cited materials do not state a current drive price, compare the accessory’s local cost with the value of the discs you already own rather than assuming a universal price.

The drive is not recognized during setup
Confirm that the drive is fully seated, the clips clicked into the console holes, and the correct Pro cover and feet are installed. Recheck the cable connection and restart the console. During first-time setup, verify that the PS5 Pro has internet access so Sony can complete the required pairing.
The cover does not sit flush
Stop rather than pressing harder. An incorrectly aligned drive or an incompatible cover set can prevent the panel from fitting. Remove the panel, check the clip alignment, and use the parts specified for the PS5 Pro. Sony explicitly says older CFI-1000 and slim CFI-2000 cover sets are not compatible with Pro.

A PS4 disc does not work
Check the individual game’s PS5 playability before treating the drive as faulty. Sony’s wording is “supported PS4 physical discs,” not every PS4 disc. Also inspect the disc for damage and make sure it is inserted in the orientation shown by the console.
You expected a game to appear instantly
Inserting a disc starts an installation. Wait for installation and any required updates to complete, then open Games home and select the installed title. The cited Sony guide does not establish that installation removes all disc-related checks, so follow the game’s prompts when launching.
Questions to answer before buying the drive
- Do you own physical PS5 games that you want to carry forward?
- Do you have supported PS4 discs and have you checked each title’s PS5 compatibility?
- Do you want 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, or DVD playback from the console?
- Are you comfortable opening the console’s outer covers and fitting the supplied parts?
- Can the console connect to the internet for the one-time drive pairing during setup?
- Have you checked the current local accessory price and availability, since Sony’s cited documentation does not state them?
The practical answer
PS5 Pro can play physical PS5 games, but only with Sony’s separately sold detachable Disc Drive. The same accessory supports supported PS4 discs and the listed 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD formats. Installation requires the correct Pro cover and feet, and Sony requires internet access to pair the drive during initial setup. If your library is entirely digital, the disc-less console avoids that extra purchase and installation; if you own discs or want disc-based movie playback, budget for the official drive and follow Sony’s model-specific setup procedure.
