Yes. Nintendo Switch 2 can play compatible physical and digital games from the original Nintendo Switch, but compatibility varies by title. Before buying a game or counting on an old favorite, check Nintendo’s compatibility information for that specific game.
How to play original Switch games on Switch 2
For a physical game, insert its Nintendo Switch game card into the Switch 2. For a digital game, link the Nintendo Account used to buy it, then download the game on Switch 2. Both methods are subject to title-specific compatibility limits. Nintendo’s compatibility information explains that some games may not be supported or may have functionality issues because Switch 2 uses different hardware.

Check a game before you buy or transfer
Look up the exact title in Nintendo’s compatibility information before purchasing it for Switch 2 or relying on it from your existing library. Nintendo notes that testing and updates can change the status of some games: some may take longer to become playable, have partial functionality issues, or remain unsupported. For details about third-party games, Nintendo advises contacting the game’s publisher. Nintendo UK’s compatibility page also states that Switch 2 can play compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games.
Which original Switch accessories work?
Game compatibility and accessory compatibility are separate questions. Some original controllers and equipment work, but not everything carries over.

Games that rely on original Joy-Con features
Some Switch games depend on the original Joy-Con’s features or physical shape, so having a compatible game does not always mean every play method will work with the controllers packed with Switch 2. Nintendo identifies Ring Fit Adventure and 1-2-Switch as examples that require original Switch Joy-Con features. The Switch 2 console also does not fit in several Toy-Con pieces. Check Nintendo’s controller and accessory compatibility list for the specific game or accessory before relying on it.
