Nothing OS is Android with Nothing’s own interface, widgets, Glyph-related tools and services layered on top. The switch is usually straightforward for an Android owner, but the experience, update schedule and eligibility for new features depend on the exact Nothing model, region and carrier. Nothing’s current OS 5.0 page describes an Android 17-based release, while several older phones are excluded. Before buying or trading in your current phone, verify the target model’s support policy and plan your data transfer.
What Nothing OS actually is
Nothing OS is the operating system used on Nothing phones. It is based on Android, so you still use familiar Android fundamentals: a Google account, Google Play for apps, standard Android permissions and the Android setup process. Nothing changes the visual design and adds its own tools rather than replacing Android with a completely separate platform.
That distinction matters when you switch. An Android user is moving between two Android phones, not learning an entirely new mobile platform. Your knowledge of Android settings, notifications, app installation and account management carries over. The parts that feel new are Nothing’s icon treatment, widgets, Glyph-related experiences and services such as Essential Space.
Nothing’s official OS 5.0 page presents the release as based on Android 17. It lists Android changes including separate Notifications and Quick Settings, additional Quick Share choices and expanded privacy controls. It also describes Nothing-specific work: Smart Collections and improved search in Essential Space, changes to Essential Voice, Essential Apps building, faster interaction and memory management, and Bluetooth controls. Those are announced capabilities on the company’s page, not independent performance results, and availability can differ by phone.

What feels different after an Android switch
A unified visual system
Nothing promotes unified icons, layouts and widgets as part of its design language. You can expect a more deliberately consistent home screen than on a phone that leaves every manufacturer and app with its own visual treatment. The exact launcher options and widget set depend on the model and installed software.
Glyph and Nothing-specific tools
Compatible phones include Glyph-related hardware and software experiences, but the functions are not identical across the range. Treat Glyph features as model-dependent: the number and arrangement of lights, supported actions and available controls follow the hardware and software on your particular phone.
Essential Space and related apps
Essential Space is a Nothing service that can organize captured information, while Essential Voice and Essential Apps provide additional Nothing experiences. Nothing says some of these components can be updated through Google Play outside a major operating-system release. That means a phone may receive an app-level improvement without receiving a new Android version at the same time.

The practical result is a layered update model: Android and Nothing OS updates arrive as system releases, while selected Nothing applications may update independently. A feature shown in a product announcement is therefore not proof that every Nothing phone has it now.
Why the exact Nothing model matters
Nothing does not provide one universal feature or support timetable for every phone. Its community roadmap says differences can result from hardware support, optimization work and stability testing. Rollouts can also be staged, and a carrier or region may receive an update later than another.
Before choosing a phone, record the exact model name and region version, then check three things:
- Which major Android or Nothing OS versions the model is promised.
- How long security updates are promised and how frequently they are expected.
- Whether the model is eligible for the specific feature or OS release you want.
Do not infer a phone’s remaining support life from the brand name or from a newer model’s policy. A commitment is normally stated from a product’s launch or policy date; it is not automatically a count of updates still left when you buy a used device.

As checked on October 13, 2026, Nothing’s US OS 5.0 page describes a phased Android 17-based rollout. The dates below are indicative windows from that page, not guaranteed delivery dates. Nothing says the stable release is phased by region and carrier, and the page does not specify a year beside each window.

| Model | Indicative OS 5.0 window on Nothing’s US page |
|---|---|
| Phone (3) | From October 12 |
| Phone (4a) Pro, Phone (4a), Phone (3a) Pro, Phone (3a) | Early November |
| Phone (2a), Phone (2a) Plus | Mid November |
| Phone (3a) Lite | Late December |
| Phone (4b), CMF Phone 2 Pro | Mid January |
| Phone (1), Phone (2), CMF Phone 1 | Not eligible for OS 5.0 |
Nothing explicitly states: “Phone (1), Phone (2) and CMF Phone 1 have reached the end of major software support and will not receive Nothing OS 5.0.” An eligible model may still wait beyond an indicative window because of carrier certification, regional staging or additional stability testing. Check the live Nothing page for your market immediately before purchase or an upgrade decision.
How Nothing’s update promises vary by model
Two official product pages illustrate why model-level checking is essential. The Phone (4a) page states Android 16, three years of OS updates and six years of security updates. The Phone (1) page states three years of Android updates and four years of security patches delivered every two months. These are model-specific commitments, not a policy that can be applied to every Nothing phone.
| Model example | OS commitment stated by Nothing | Security commitment stated by Nothing | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phone (4a) | Three years of OS updates | Six years of security updates | Policy shown on the Phone (4a) product page; it does not establish the remaining term for a later purchase. |
| Phone (1) | Three years of Android updates | Four years of patches every two months | Older-model example; it should not be generalized to newer or different models. |
For an over-the-air update, Nothing’s support instructions point to Settings → System → System updates. Back up your phone before installing. If you are considering beta software, Nothing warns about possible stability, battery and performance effects. Rolling back from a beta erases data, so make a verified backup before enrolling or attempting a rollback.

Moving from an Android phone to Nothing
Nothing’s documented transfer process is designed for Android-to-Nothing setup. Prepare both phones before starting; the old phone should remain available until you have checked the new one.
Before you begin
- Charge both phones, ideally to a level that will last through the copy.
- Connect to a reliable Wi-Fi network.
- Have the Google account credentials used on the old phone ready.
- Install pending updates on the old phone and make a separate backup of irreplaceable photos or files.
- Keep the old phone unlocked and nearby until verification is complete.
Use the setup wizard
- Turn on the Nothing Phone and begin the initial setup.
- When asked how to copy data, choose the Android-phone option. The newer Nothing instructions describe scanning a QR code to connect the devices.
- Sign in to your Google account when prompted.
- Choose the categories to copy. Nothing’s cable instructions list texts, videos, contacts, calendar items and music, and let you uncheck categories you do not want.
- Leave both phones connected while the copy runs. Nothing says the process can take from a few minutes to more than an hour, depending on the amount of data.
- Finish setup, open Google Play and download any apps that did not transfer automatically.
A transfer category is not a guarantee that every app’s private database, encrypted content, login token or device-specific setting will move. Banking, authenticator, messaging and work apps often require their own sign-in or export process. Keep the old phone until you have opened the services you rely on and confirmed that their data is present.
What an iPhone switcher should expect
The Nothing support instructions covered here describe Android-to-Nothing setup, not a complete iPhone migration. Do not assume that an iPhone transfer will reproduce the Android process or bring over Apple-specific services automatically.
Before wiping or trading in an iPhone, make a list of what matters: contacts, photos, messages, calendars, notes, passwords, authenticator codes, cloud files, subscriptions and health data. For each service, check its own export or Android migration instructions. Confirm that you can sign in on the Nothing Phone and that any two-factor authentication method has been moved. Preserve the iPhone until those checks are finished; the official Nothing material reviewed here does not establish a comprehensive iPhone checklist.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFirst-day verification checklist
After setup, verify the result rather than assuming a completed progress bar means everything arrived.

Common switching problems and fixes
Some apps are missing
Open Google Play on the Nothing Phone and reinstall them. If an app is unavailable or its data is absent, use that app’s account-recovery or backup process rather than repeatedly rerunning the phone transfer.
The copy appears stuck
Large video libraries can take more than an hour. Keep both phones charged, connected and close together. If the process fails, finish basic setup, update both devices and retry with fewer categories, starting with contacts, messages and calendars.
A feature shown for OS 5.0 is not present
Check the model, software build and region. The feature may require hardware that your phone lacks, a later staged build or a separate Google Play update. Nothing’s roadmap specifically warns that hardware, optimization and stability testing can change timing.
The update is not offered
Confirm that your model is eligible, install any available intermediate updates and check again through Settings → System → System updates. Carrier and regional phasing can delay an otherwise eligible device. Phone (1), Phone (2) and CMF Phone 1 are exclusions from OS 5.0, not merely delayed recipients.
You want to leave a beta
Read Nothing’s rollback instructions first and make a full backup. Nothing warns that rollback erases data and that beta software can affect stability, battery life and performance.
A practical decision framework before buying
Compare candidate phones on support and migration details, not only on the Nothing name or a feature list.
- Identify the exact model. Include the regional and carrier version where relevant.
- Check support terms. Record the promised OS-update period, security-update period and patch cadence.
- Check feature eligibility. Verify that the model supports the Nothing OS release, Essential features or Glyph functions you care about.
- Assess your data. List accounts and services that need separate exports, sign-ins or device approval.
- Confirm rollout conditions. Treat indicative dates as schedules that can move because of region, carrier or testing.
- Match hardware to your needs. Price, cameras, battery, storage and connectivity require current product-specific checking; software support alone cannot decide the purchase.
Nothing Phone (4a) is one current example with a published three-year OS and six-year security commitment, but that statement belongs to the Phone (4a) page and should not be used as a promise for another model. Compare the phone you will actually buy with the policy published for that phone.

Nothing OS is a recognizable Android environment with a distinctive visual layer and Nothing-specific services. Android users should find the basic transition familiar, and Nothing provides an initial setup path for copying selected data from another Android phone. Plan for app reinstallation and individual sign-ins, and keep the old device until you have verified important information.
The larger risk is choosing a model on the strength of a general feature announcement. OS 5.0 eligibility, rollout timing, hardware-dependent functions and update longevity vary by phone. Check the exact model’s official support terms and live rollout status, and treat iPhone migration as a separate investigation because the documented Nothing process is Android-specific.
