The common Wi-Fi standard’s formal technical name is IEEE 802.11. It is the IEEE family of standards for wireless local area networking; “Wi-Fi” is the familiar name for the wireless networking ecosystem, not the formal IEEE standard number.

What does IEEE 802.11 mean?

IEEE 802.11 specifies how devices communicate over a wireless local area network (WLAN). The IEEE describes it as defining MAC (medium access control) and physical-layer specifications for wireless connectivity among fixed, portable, and moving stations in a local area. In practical terms, it covers how devices use the wireless network link, rather than guaranteeing a particular internet connection or experience.

The formal title of the current consolidated standard is “Wireless LAN Medium Access Control (MAC) and Physical Layer (PHY) Specifications.” The IEEE Standards Association lists IEEE 802.11-2024 as active. Its publication date is April 28, 2025, and it incorporates amendments 1 through 7 published during 2021–2024.

Is Wi-Fi the same as IEEE 802.11?

They are closely related, but the terms do different jobs. IEEE 802.11 is the name of the standards family; Wi-Fi is the familiar ecosystem name used for wireless networking products and generations. So, if someone asks for the official technical standard name, IEEE 802.11 is the precise answer—not simply “Wi-Fi.”

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

The IEEE’s project description says: “This standard defines one medium access control (MAC) and several physical layer (PHY) specifications for wireless connectivity for fixed, portable, and moving stations (STAs) within a local area.” See the IEEE 802.11 working-group page.

How do Wi-Fi generation names relate to 802.11?

Familiar generation labels provide a simpler way to refer to particular 802.11 work. The IEEE’s examples include these mappings:

Wi-Fi 4 802.11n The IEEE timeline says it supported 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz.
Wi-Fi 5 802.11ac A generation mapping shown by the IEEE Technology Navigator.
Wi-Fi 6 802.11ax A generation mapping shown by the IEEE Technology Navigator.
Wi-Fi 6E 802.11ax extended into 6 GHz 6 GHz availability depends on the country and equipment.

These names are useful shorthand, but a label alone does not tell you every capability a particular router or device supports. For example, the 6 GHz association for Wi-Fi 6E should not be read as a promise that the band is available everywhere. The IEEE Technology Navigator provides the cited generation associations; the IEEE Wi-Fi timeline gives the Wi-Fi 4 band example.

What the 802.11 name does—and does not—tell you

IEEE 802.11 identifies the technical standards family behind wireless local networking. It does not, by itself, specify the speed you will get, the quality of your internet service, the coverage of your home, or whether every pair of devices will work together as you expect. Those outcomes depend on the actual equipment, its supported capabilities, and the network environment.

NETGEAR Nighthawk WiFi 6 Router R6700AX, Up to 1,500 sq ft, 1.8 Gbps
  • NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
  • WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
  • SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
  • READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

When setting up or upgrading a wireless network, check that the access point or router and the devices that will connect to it support the features and frequency bands you need. A standards-family name is useful context, not a performance guarantee.
