For Halloween designs, choose face paint labeled for use on skin—not craft paint—and check its directions, ingredients, and any warnings before applying it. There is no independent head-to-head test here to establish one product as the best. A practical starting option is a water-based face paint kit; for example, Snazaroo says its paints wash off with soap and water, but that is a manufacturer claim, not a guarantee against irritation or a comparison with other brands.
How to choose Halloween face paint
Start with the costume design, then check whether the product is appropriate for the area where you plan to apply it. Halloween face paint is a cosmetic. The FDA explains that color additives must be approved for their intended use, and permitted uses can differ by body area. That does not mean the FDA endorses a finished product as universally safe. - Read the label: Confirm the product is intended for skin, review its ingredient list, and follow its application and removal instructions.
- Check the intended area: Do not assume face paint is suitable around the eyes. Use it there only if the specific product’s labeling and the color’s permitted use allow it.
- Match finish and color to the design: Consider whether you need classic colors, sparkle, or metallic effects, but do not treat finish or a product description as proof of better coverage or wear.
- Look for clear directions: Choose a product whose ingredients and restrictions are readable and whose cleanup directions suit your plans.
A water-based option to consider
Snazaroo describes its face paints as water-based, removable with soap and water, and available in classic, sparkle, and metallic finishes. Its US site also says its products are patch-tested on volunteers with sensitive skin and assessed by toxicologists under EU and US cosmetic regulations. These are claims from Snazaroo; they do not establish that no one will react or that the kit outperforms other products. Formulations and directions may vary by product, so check the exact package.

- Patch-test unfamiliar paint: Apply a small amount to an area of the arm and wait a couple of days before using it on the face. This is particularly sensible for someone with allergies. A patch test cannot guarantee that a reaction will not occur.
- Wash your hands: Clean hands before application, and do not share makeup.
- Follow the product directions: Observe warnings and avoid areas the label excludes. Take special care around the eyes; the FDA says the fluorescent cosmetic colors it lists are not permitted near the eyes.
- Store and inspect it: Keep makeup away from excessive heat or moisture. Discard it if it develops a bad smell.
- Remove it at the end of the day: Follow the package’s cleanup directions, remove makeup before bed, and be gentle near the eyes.
The FDA has reported past recalls of face-paint products in March 2005 and May 2009 involving reports such as rash, irritation, itching, and minor swelling; its page does not provide a count or rate. The American Academy of Pediatrics’ HealthyChildren Halloween safety guidance also advises washing hands, not sharing makeup, discarding products with a bad smell, and removing makeup at day’s end. It notes that cosmetics and ingredients are not pre-tested by the FDA before sale, while color additives require FDA approval.

How to remove Halloween face paint
Use the removal method on the product label. For Snazaroo, the manufacturer says its water-based paints wash off with soap and water; do not assume that method applies to every face paint. Near the eyes, remove makeup gently and avoid rubbing. Take makeup off before bed.
