There is no single universal ranking of chemistry journals. The answer depends on whether “top” means highest recent Journal Impact Factor (JIF), most citations overall, influence across a longer window, or the best audience and scope for a particular paper. In publisher-reported 2025 figures, Chemical Reviews had chemistry’s highest JIF, while the Journal of the American Chemical Society (JACS) was described as the most-cited chemistry journal. Those figures identify useful standouts, not a definitive ranking for every specialty or manuscript.
What the latest reported figures say
The figures below are publisher-reported 2025 metrics published in 2026. They answer different questions and should not be read as a single league table.

ACS also reports a median 2025 JIF of 5.5 across its portfolio of more than 90 peer-reviewed journals. That is a portfolio statistic, not a chemistry-wide median or ranking. ACS Publications
Why “top” depends on the metric
Journal Impact Factor
JIF is a journal-level measure: it estimates citations in a given Journal Citation Reports (JCR) year to scholarly items published by the journal in the preceding two years, divided by the number of those items. A JIF does not tell you how many citations an individual paper will receive, nor does it establish that every article in a journal is equally influential. Total citation count
A total citation figure reflects citation volume over the period and according to the source’s method. It is not interchangeable with JIF, which uses a defined two-year publication window and a denominator based on scholarly items. JACS’s reported 628,967 citations in 2025 therefore answers a different question from its JIF of 16.6. ACS Publications
Longer-window and other indicators
A five-year JIF covers a longer citation window than the two-year JIF. Measures such as immediacy index, Eigenfactor, Article Influence Score, SNIP, and SJR use other approaches or emphasize other aspects of citation patterns. How to use these standouts
If you mean highest current JIF
Chemical Reviews is the standout in the cited ACS report: it gives the journal a 2025 JIF of 64.2 and identifies it as chemistry’s highest. Because it is a review title, this is most relevant to readers seeking review literature or authors preparing a review that fits its scope—not authors submitting original experimental or theoretical research. If you mean a leading review venue with multiple metrics
Nature Reviews Chemistry reports a 2025 JIF of 50.3 and five-year JIF of 55.5, alongside several other indicators. As with Chemical Reviews, its review focus makes article type and editorial scope central to whether it is a plausible publication destination. Springer Nature
Choosing a chemistry journal for a paper
A chemistry-wide metric cannot establish the best venue for a specialized paper. Use the following checks before treating a journal as a candidate:

- Match the article type. Confirm whether the journal publishes original research, reviews, or the particular format you plan to submit.
- Check scope and specialty. A broad chemistry title and a specialist journal reach different research communities. Compare venues within the relevant subfield rather than assuming a chemistry-wide figure identifies the strongest specialist option.
- Identify the intended readership. Consider which researchers need the result and whether the journal’s remit reaches them.
- Read current author instructions. Scope, article categories, and submission requirements should be checked on the journal’s current pages; the metrics listed here do not establish eligibility or fit.
- Choose the metric before making a ranking. State the database, category, metric, and year. A ranking by JIF is not the same as one by citation volume or a longer-window measure.
How current are these rankings?
The figures above refer to 2025 metrics as reported by the publishers in 2026; they are not timeless journal properties. JCR records can be reloaded or corrected, and some metrics may be provisional before a final reload is published. Verify the current database release and name the metric year when citing a ranking.
