No: the standard ping command needs an IP address, not a MAC address. If you know a device’s MAC address and want to check whether it is on your local network, inspect your computer’s ARP or neighbor table; to test whether it answers network echo requests, ping its IP address.
Why standard ping cannot target a MAC address
ping sends an Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) echo request to an IP destination. A MAC address identifies a network interface on a local link, so it is not a destination that ordinary IP ping can use. An overview of ping and ARP explains the distinction.
For IPv4 communication on the same local link, Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) maps a known IP address to a MAC address. ARP is address resolution, not an ICMP echo test: it does not establish that a device will respond to ping.
What to do if you have a MAC address
- If you know the device’s IP address: run your operating system’s ordinary
pingcommand against that IP address. The command checks whether an ICMP echo reply is received. - If you need to see a local IP-to-MAC association: inspect the ARP or neighbor table. A commonly available form is
arp -a, though commands and output vary by operating system. - If you only know the MAC address: the table may help you identify an associated IP address if that mapping is present. It is not a guaranteed way to discover a device: an inactive device may not appear, and an existing entry may be stale. The ARP explanation discusses these limits.
Why the network segment matters
ARP discovery applies to the local network segment. When the destination is on another subnet, your computer normally resolves the MAC address of its next-hop router, not the remote endpoint’s MAC. A local neighbor table therefore cannot generally reveal the MAC address of a device across a router. See the ping and ARP overview.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How to interpret the result
A ping that receives no reply means only that no ICMP echo reply arrived. It does not by itself prove that the device is powered off. A firewall may block echo traffic, the network may isolate devices, the address information may be stale, or routing and segmentation may prevent the test from reaching the intended device.
Likewise, a MAC/IP entry in a neighbor table is not proof that the device is currently responsive. Treat address lookup and reachability testing as separate checks: use the table to inspect a local mapping, and ping the IP address to test for an echo response.

The specialized network-operator exception
Some managed Ethernet services provide a vendor-specific tool called “MAC ping.” Nokia documents a mac-ping utility for checking whether a destination MAC has an egress service access point (SAP) binding in a Virtual Private LAN Service (VPLS). Nokia describes its purpose as determining whether that binding exists. Nokia’s OAM and SAA documentation covers the command.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
This is Ethernet service operations, administration and maintenance (OAM), not a feature of the standard desktop ping command. Nokia also documents service-specific CPE ping behavior that can use ARP and MAC-ping signaling in VPLS or Epipe contexts; its operation depends on service type, platform, and configuration. Nokia’s CPE ping documentation describes that implementation. Neither case makes direct MAC ping a general-purpose endpoint tool.

Ping and ARP answer different questions
| Check | What it tests or shows | Typical scope | Tool context |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ordinary ping | Whether an IP destination returns an ICMP echo reply | IP network; may cross routers | Standard operating-system utility |
| ARP or neighbor-table inspection | A local IP-to-MAC association, when an entry is available | Local network segment | Operating-system address-resolution information |
Nokia mac-ping |
Whether a MAC has an egress SAP binding in a VPLS service | Managed Ethernet service | Vendor-specific network OAM utility |
These checks are related, but they are not interchangeable: ping tests an IP-level echo response, while ARP resolves local IPv4 addresses to link-layer addresses.
