Burlington’s standard U.S. return window is 30 days from purchase. Bring the original receipt, and make sure the item is new, unused, unwashed, and in its original packaging. Refunds generally go back to the original form of payment. Returns without a receipt, returns after the standard window, and loyalty-member extensions follow different conditions, so check the details before visiting a store.
How Burlington’s return deadlines work
Burlington’s posted U.S. policy sets a 30-day standard return window, counted from the date of purchase. The policy also describes merchandise-credit outcomes for some returns made after that period. The 30-day deadline is not the same as a guarantee that every late return will be accepted: all returns are subject to third-party verification and system approval, and Burlington reserves the right to limit or refuse refunds.
| Situation | What Burlington’s posted policy says | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Return within 30 days with the original receipt | Refunds generally go to the original form of payment. | Merchandise must meet Burlington’s condition and packaging requirements. |
| Receipted return after 30 days | Merchandise credit, less service fees, is described for this late-return route. | The policy separately identifies returns after 60 days; do not treat the two timing rules as identical. |
| Return after 60 days | Merchandise credit for the lowest selling price is described. | Approval and verification still apply. |
| Return without a receipt | Merchandise credit for the lowest selling price is described when the customer presents acceptable photo ID. | The policy does not promise approval for every no-receipt return. |
| Qualifying loyalty return | Returns within 45 days are described at select stores. | Availability and receipt-free details are not established as universal; ask the store about eligibility and the purchase. |
In practice, the clearest route is to return the item within 30 days with the receipt. If that is not possible, identify which exception might apply—late return, missing receipt, or an eligible loyalty benefit—and ask the store what documentation and outcome to expect before making the trip.
Pay close attention to the date and the type of return you are making. The 30-day rule describes the standard return period, while the policy separately describes a credit less service fees for receipted returns after 30 days and a lowest-selling-price credit for returns after 60 days. A no-receipt return has its own documentation and credit terms. These routes should not be treated as interchangeable, and the policy makes approval subject to verification.

What to bring and how the item must be
For a standard return, take the original receipt and the merchandise. Burlington’s posted policy says returned items must be new, unused, and unwashed, and must be in their original packaging. If the packaging is missing or the item has been used, the published wording does not establish that the store will accept it; contact the location first rather than assuming an exception.
For a return without a receipt, Burlington lists these acceptable forms of photo identification:
- Driver’s license
- State-issued non-driver identification
- Passport
- Military identification
Bring the ID itself, not just a note of its number. Burlington says ID information and return transaction history may be collected and entered into the return processor’s system where permitted by law. That verification process can affect whether a return is approved.
The policy’s condition language is specific: new, unused, unwashed, and in original packaging. If you are unsure whether an item meets those requirements—for example, if the packaging is incomplete or the merchandise has been handled—ask the store before going. The posted terms do not give a full list of product-category exceptions or explain how every unusual condition is assessed, so a store associate is the best source for a decision about a particular item.
How refunds are issued
For an eligible return, Burlington says the refund is generally made to the original form of payment. The policy specifies two exceptions in how the payment is handled: purchases made by check are credited to the original account, while PIN debit purchases receive cash. The posted rules do not describe a customer’s ability to choose a different refund method, so do not count on receiving cash or store credit for a standard, receipted return paid another way.
Late or non-receipted returns are different from an ordinary refund. Where the policy describes merchandise credit, that is the stated outcome rather than a refund to the original payment method. The applicable timing and receipt conditions matter: a receipted return after 30 days is described as merchandise credit less service fees, while returns after 60 days and returns without a receipt are described as credit based on the lowest selling price. Ask the associate to confirm how the rule applies to your transaction before it is processed.

That distinction matters if you are planning around the value of the return. A merchandise credit is not the same as money returned to the card or account used to pay, and a lowest-selling-price calculation may be different from the amount on your receipt. If the policy route that applies to you includes service fees or uses the lowest selling price, ask the associate to explain the amount before the transaction is completed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat happens if you are past the 30-day window?
Burlington’s wording distinguishes between a return after 30 days and one after 60 days. For a return with a receipt after 30 days, the policy describes merchandise credit less service fees. For a return after 60 days, it describes merchandise credit for the lowest selling price. Those are separate terms, not a single blanket rule that all late returns receive the same credit.
The policy does not set out every possible calculation or explain how the store determines service fees in an individual case. Keep the receipt and ask the store to clarify the expected credit and any fee before proceeding. Because Burlington subjects returns to verification and system approval, the stated credit route should not be read as unconditional acceptance.
If you are close to one of the stated deadlines, use the purchase date on your receipt to check where you stand rather than relying on memory. Ask the store which timing provision it will apply, especially if the purchase is more than 30 days old. The published wording does not explain every possible date-calculation scenario, so confirm any uncertainty with Burlington before making a special trip.
Returning an item without a receipt
Burlington’s posted policy describes merchandise credit at the lowest selling price for returns made without a receipt when the customer presents an accepted photo ID. This is not the same as a receipt-based refund: the policy describes credit, not reimbursement to the original payment method, and the lowest selling price may differ from what you paid.

For a no-receipt request, take one of the forms of photo ID listed above and be prepared for the associate to submit the return for verification. The terms do not promise that presenting ID guarantees approval. If you still have any record that helps identify the purchase, bring it along, but check with the location about what it can use; the posted policy specifically identifies the receipt and listed photo IDs.
Does Burlington offer a 45-day loyalty return window?
Burlington’s loyalty terms describe qualifying returns within 45 days of purchase at select stores. The terms retain third-party verification and Burlington’s right to limit or refuse refunds, and they direct customers to ask a store associate for details. This makes the 45-day period a location-dependent benefit, not a general replacement for the standard 30-day policy.
Before relying on the extension, check with the store where you plan to return the item. Ask whether that location participates, whether your specific purchase qualifies, and what proof of purchase or account information is needed. The public terms do not provide a complete, universal explanation of how a receipt-free loyalty return is processed.
The practical comparison is straightforward: the standard period is 30 days, while the loyalty terms describe up to 45 days only at select locations. The longer window is therefore not something to assume applies to every Burlington store or every purchase. Loyalty language also does not remove the stated condition requirements or third-party verification. If you are past day 30, confirm eligibility and the expected refund or credit with the store instead of assuming the extension changes every other rule.
Can you exchange an item at Burlington?
Burlington’s available U.S. policy information does not set out a complete, separate exchange procedure. It does not establish whether an exchange is processed directly or by returning the original item and making another purchase, nor does it explain how a price difference would be handled. Burlington’s privacy policy recognizes returns and exchanges as types of customer interaction, but that does not explain the steps or guarantee a particular exchange outcome.
If you want a different size, color, or item, contact or visit the store before assuming an exchange can be completed on specific terms. Ask whether the item must first qualify under the return policy, whether the replacement is available, and how any difference in price will be handled. Policies from other retailers with similar names do not establish Burlington’s procedure.

Have the original item and receipt details ready when you ask. The receipt, condition requirements, and standard return deadline may be relevant if the store handles your request through its return process, but Burlington’s published U.S. material does not specify that this is always how exchanges work. Confirm the process at the specific location before making plans around a direct swap or a particular refund method.
Layaway returns
Burlington’s policy says layaway deposits, payments, and returned layaway merchandise receive merchandise credit less service fees. The policy does not describe a separate original-payment refund route for these layaway amounts. If your return involves a layaway, bring the related receipt or records and ask the store to explain the credit and fees applicable to your transaction.
This treatment covers more than the merchandise itself: the policy includes layaway deposits and payments as well as merchandise returned from layaway. If you are trying to understand what will happen to an amount already paid, ask the associate to separate the applicable credit and service fees in the explanation. Do not assume the standard original-payment refund rule applies to layaway.
Before you visit a store
- Check the purchase date. Work out whether the return is within 30 days, after 30 days, or after 60 days. If you are seeking the loyalty extension, confirm the 45-day benefit with a participating location.
- Locate the receipt. It supports the standard refund route and helps the associate identify the purchase. If it is unavailable, bring one of the photo IDs Burlington lists and expect the no-receipt merchandise-credit terms to apply if the return is approved.
- Check the item’s condition. The posted requirements are new, unused, unwashed, and in original packaging. For an item that does not meet them, ask the store whether it can be considered before travelling.
- Call the location about exceptions. This is especially useful for an exchange, a late or receipt-free return, a loyalty extension, or a layaway transaction. Ask about store eligibility, documentation, and the likely form of credit or refund.
- Bring the relevant records and allow for verification. Returns go through a third-party verification process and system approval, so having the receipt, item, and any required ID together can help the associate assess the transaction.
Check Burlington’s current live Return Policy and your receipt before making a decision, since posted terms and local availability can change. The policy page surfaced on October 13, 2026, but the live policy is the place to verify current wording. It does not provide a complete list of product-category exclusions or state-specific rules; for a particular product or local-law issue, ask Burlington directly and consult the applicable local requirements.

Can I return something after 30 days?

For an eligible return with the original receipt, Burlington generally refunds the original form of payment. The merchandise must be new, unused, unwashed, and in its original packaging.

Does Burlington refund purchases paid by check or PIN debit differently?
Yes. Burlington says check purchases are credited to the original account, while PIN debit purchases receive cash. Other eligible standard refunds generally go to the original form of payment.
Are Burlington’s 45-day returns available at every store?
No. The loyalty terms describe the extended window at select stores. Ask a store associate whether the location participates, whether your purchase qualifies, and what documentation is needed.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Bring the receipt and return eligible merchandise within 30 days for the clearest path to a refund to the original payment method. No-receipt and late returns may result in merchandise credit under different terms, and the 45-day loyalty window is limited to select stores. Burlington subjects returns to verification and approval; contact your local store about exchanges or unusual cases.
