The U.S. antimony supply chain is a mix of domestic mining, domestic processing that uses imported feedstock, imports, and recycling. In 2025, one domestic company began mining antimony in Montana, while a Montana company separately produced primary antimony metal and oxide using imported feedstock. Recycling supplied an estimated 12% of U.S. apparent consumption; imports supplied the remainder. A proposed Idaho pilot-plant validation effort is a test of a design, not evidence of commercial-scale production.
How does antimony move through the U.S. supply chain?
“Domestic production” can refer to different stages. Antimony-bearing ore may be mined in the United States, processed into concentrate, refined into metal or oxide, or recovered from used products. Those steps do not necessarily happen at the same facility or use material from the same source.
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) identifies stibnite (Sb2S3) as the predominant antimony ore mineral. Stibnite ore is not the same product as antimony concentrate, refined metal or oxide, imported feedstock, or recycled antimonial lead. Each represents a different point in the material chain.

The separate mining and processing reports matter: the 2025 mining activity does not establish that the newly mined material supplied all domestic processors. In particular, USGS describes the Montana primary metal and oxide production as using imported feedstock.

How much did recycling and imports contribute?
USGS estimated that recycling supplied 12% of U.S. apparent antimony consumption in 2025, with the remainder supplied by imports. Apparent consumption is a measure of material available to meet domestic use, rather than a count of what was mined within the country. The 12% figure is a USGS estimate for 2025, published in its 2026 annual summary; it is not a forecast or a 2026 production figure.
The reported recycling stream is specific: antimonial lead recovered from spent lead-acid batteries is used in the lead-acid battery industry. USGS estimated the value of secondary antimony produced in 2025 at $190 million. That value refers to secondary production, not the value of all U.S. antimony supply.

The available figures establish imports’ overall role, but not a current country-by-country breakdown of U.S. sourcing. They also should not be read as saying that every imported material is finished antimony metal: imported feedstock can be used in domestic primary production.

These are USGS-reported 2025 use shares in the 2026 annual summary, not estimates of how much of each product is made domestically. The categories show that antimony demand spans different industrial products rather than a single end market.
What does the proposed Idaho project establish?
A U.S. Department of Energy project notice dated April 14, 2026, describes a proposed collaboration between Idaho National Laboratory and Perpetua Resources to verify and validate Perpetua’s pilot-plant design. The planned tests concern production of antimony trisulfide concentrate and pyrite concentrate from Stibnite ore supplied by Perpetua.

This is a proposed pilot validation effort, not a report of an operating commercial plant. The notice does not establish commercial-scale output or a commercial-production date. Concentrate from a pilot test would also be a different material and supply-chain stage from refined antimony metal or oxide.
What the available figures do—and do not—show
- They show multiple supply routes. Domestic mining, domestic primary production from imported feedstock, imports, and recycling all have a place in the reported 2025 supply picture.
- They do not show a self-contained domestic chain. The reported Montana primary production used imported feedstock, and imports supplied most estimated apparent consumption in 2025.
- They do not identify current import shares by country. No country ranking or percentage is established by the cited figures here.
- They do not establish future Idaho output. The DOE notice describes proposed testing of a pilot design, not a confirmed commercial schedule or production volume.
