“10-bit pixel compression” has no single universal meaning. 10-bit describes sample precision; compression describes a format or process for representing data more compactly. To know what the phrase means in a specific case, identify the format and the stage of the image or video workflow.
What “10-bit” means—and what it does not
In an image or video format, 10-bit usually means that each relevant component sample has 10 meaningful bits of precision. It does not mean that an entire pixel occupies 10 bits, nor does it specify a compression ratio, file size, or codec. The number of bits used in storage depends on the format’s layout and allocation rules.
For example, a pixel format may store color as separate luma and chroma components rather than as three independent values for every pixel. Chroma can also be subsampled, so adding up component bit depths does not necessarily give the storage used per pixel.
How a 10-bit format can use more storage than its samples require
P010: 10-bit samples in a defined video layout
Android documents P010 as a “10-bit-per component 4:2:0 YCbCr semiplanar format.” Its component samples are allocated in 16-bit little-endian storage, with the 10 most significant bits carrying the sample. Because 4:2:0 subsamples chroma horizontally and vertically, the format has 24 allocated bits per pixel and 15 bits of data per pixel—not 10 bits per pixel. See the Android MediaCodecInfo.CodecCapabilities reference.

The same reference documents P210 as 10-bit-per-component 4:2:2 semiplanar, with 32 allocated bits per pixel and 20 bits of data per pixel. These figures describe those specific layouts, not a general rule for all 10-bit formats. Android’s API reference labels P010 as added at API level 33 and P210 at API level 36; these are API-level labels, not universal adoption dates.
When the phrase does describe compression
Compressed Bayer data
Android also documents a specific camera-oriented format called COLOR_FormatRawBayer8bitcompressed. In that representation, each byte carries a sample from a 10-bit signal compressed into 8 bits using DPCM/PCM, as defined by the SMIA Functional Specification. This is one particular compressed Bayer representation. It does not establish that every 10-bit image can be converted this way, or that the conversion is lossless. The format is described in the Android API reference.

Texture compression versus image compression
“Compression” can also refer to different tasks. The Khronos Data Format Specification distinguishes texture compression, designed to allow efficient random access during texture sampling, from image compression, which can exploit redundancy across an image. Those approaches serve different workflows; neither is implied merely by calling data 10-bit. See the Khronos Data Format Specification v1.4.0.

- Compression behavior: the algorithm, resulting data size or bitrate, and whether the format permits random access.
- Compatibility: the relevant camera pipeline, codec, GPU, API version, and decoder support.
Does compression turn 10-bit pixels into 8-bit pixels?
Not necessarily. The phrase alone does not say whether a process reduces precision, changes storage layout, or uses a particular codec. In Android’s compressed Bayer example, a 10-bit signal is represented in 8 bits per byte using DPCM/PCM; that specific description is not evidence that all 10-bit data behaves the same way. Consult the named format or codec documentation to determine whether a conversion is lossy, reversible, or simply a different representation.
