A roadside emergency kit should help you communicate, be seen, stay warm, manage minor injuries, handle a dead battery or flat tire when it is safe, and remain supplied until help arrives. Pack the core items below, then adapt the kit to your vehicle, passengers, season, route, and likely weather. Even a well-maintained car can break down, which is why the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recommends carrying an emergency kit.

Core roadside emergency kit checklist

The most useful kit combines communication, visibility, first aid, battery and tire equipment, warmth, water, food, medication, and a few cleanup and repair supplies. Keep every item compatible with your vehicle and usable under the conditions in which you may actually need it.

Category What to pack Important qualification
Communication and navigation Charged mobile phone, car charger, optional portable battery pack, paper map, pen and notepad A phone is only useful if it has power and a signal; a paper map is a backup when navigation is unavailable.
Visibility and safety Flashlight with working batteries, reflective triangles or warning flares, and a white flag where appropriate Deploy warning devices only when you can do so without entering a dangerous traffic lane.
Medical and personal protection First-aid kit, work gloves, spare clothing, emergency blanket, towels or coats NHTSA’s current list includes a tourniquet; use medical supplies only within your training.
Battery support Jumper cables and, if compatible, a portable jump starter Confirm cable length, terminal access, and jump-starter requirements for your vehicle.
Tire support Tire-pressure gauge, vehicle-compatible jack, lug wrench, and a stable mat or board Check the owner’s manual and never change a tire in an exposed or unstable location.
Limited repairs Basic hand tools and duct tape These are for temporary, minor fixes only; they do not replace professional repair.
Supplies Drinking water, nonperishable food, necessary medicines, paper towels, rags or wipes, and extra windshield-washer fluid Rotate consumables and keep medicines within their labeled storage requirements.

This overlap reflects the roadside-kit guidance published by NHTSA and the Automobile Association of America (AAA). Their lists are U.S.-oriented; local traffic rules and your vehicle manufacturer’s instructions can differ.

Communication, navigation, and calling for help

Keep a powered phone available

Store a phone charger in the vehicle and start trips with the phone charged. A portable battery pack is useful when the vehicle’s electrical system is the problem, but keep the pack charged and check that its connector fits your phone. Save emergency contacts and any roadside-assistance details in the phone before leaving.

Carry navigation that does not depend on electronics

A paper map covering unfamiliar routes can help when a phone battery, app, or cellular connection fails. A pen and small notepad are practical for recording a tow company’s instructions, a license plate, or an incident number. Mark your route and major junctions before a long trip if you expect weak service.

Make the vehicle visible before you attempt anything

Visibility often matters more than a repair. A flashlight helps you inspect the vehicle and signal after dark; check its batteries regularly and consider carrying spares. Reflective triangles or warning flares alert approaching drivers. NHTSA also lists a white flag. Follow local rules for placement, and do not walk into traffic to set a device.

Turn on the hazard lights when the vehicle is stopped and it is safe to do so. If you can move, pull as far to the right as possible, preferably beyond moving traffic. On a high-speed road, a repair attempt may expose you to greater danger than waiting for professional assistance.

First aid and personal protection

Pack a usable first-aid kit

Include dressings, gauze, adhesive tape, antiseptic supplies, and any personal medical items your passengers may need. NHTSA’s current roadside list includes a tourniquet. A tourniquet can be lifesaving for severe bleeding, but use it only if you know the proper technique; call emergency services and follow dispatcher instructions. A first-aid kit is not a substitute for urgent medical care.

Protect your hands and body

Work gloves protect against sharp metal, hot components, and grime. Keep a change of clothes, towels, or coats for rain, cold, or fluids. An emergency blanket adds compact insulation, while a coat or blanket sized for each passenger is more useful than relying on one shared covering. Include any required prescription medicines and account for children’s or pets’ needs separately.

Battery and tire equipment must match the car

Jumper cables or a jump starter

Jumper cables are useful when another vehicle can provide a jump and the connection procedure is safe. A portable jump starter can supplement or replace cables when its output is compatible with the vehicle. Read the owner’s manual before connecting anything: hybrid, electric, start-stop, and vehicles with remote battery terminals may have specific procedures or restrictions. Keep cables clean, dry, and free of damaged insulation.

Pressure gauge, jack, and lug wrench

A tire-pressure gauge lets you check a suspected leak and verify pressure after inflating a tire. Pack the jack and lug wrench that fit your vehicle’s wheel nuts; the tools supplied with one car may not fit another. Check whether your car has a spare tire, a temporary spare, or an inflation-and-sealant system, and learn its limits before a trip.

NHTSA’s list includes a ground mat. A stable board or mat can keep a jack from sinking on soft ground, but it cannot make an unsafe shoulder safe. Consult the owner’s manual for approved jacking points, maximum speed on a temporary spare, and tightening instructions. If traffic, visibility, weather, or ground conditions are unsafe, call for help instead of changing the tire.

Tools and fluids for limited roadside fixes

A compact tool roll can contain screwdrivers, pliers, adjustable wrenches, sockets that fit common fasteners on your vehicle, and a utility knife. Duct tape can temporarily secure a loose panel or hose cover. Use these items only to make a controlled, short-term repair that gets you to a safe location. Do not tape a damaged fuel line, repair a high-voltage component, or continue driving when a warning light indicates a serious fault.

Pack paper towels, rags, or wipes for checking fluids and cleaning hands. Extra windshield-washer fluid is useful on long or dirty routes, especially when visibility is reduced by spray or salt. Do not open a hot cooling system or add an unknown fluid to a reservoir; the owner’s manual identifies the correct fluid and safe procedure.

Water, food, and medication

Carry drinking water for every occupant and nonperishable food that tolerates the temperatures inside your vehicle. Choose sealed portions that can be eaten without cooking, and replace anything damaged by heat, freezing, or expiration. Pack necessary medicines in accordance with their labeled storage instructions; some medicines should not remain in a hot car for extended periods. If a passenger has allergies, diabetes, or another condition requiring special supplies, build that requirement into the kit rather than treating it as an optional extra.

Adapt the kit to season, route, and passengers

Cold, snow, and ice

AAA’s seasonal guidance includes an ice scraper or snow brush, traction aid, shovel, tarp or rain gear, and warm clothing. Select equipment based on the roads you will actually use. A shovel and traction material are more relevant for a rural winter route than for a short trip on cleared urban streets, but weather can change quickly in either setting.

Rain, heat, and remote travel

Rain gear or a tarp can keep you dry while you wait. In hot conditions, carry additional water and plan for shade where possible; never leave children or pets unattended in a disabled vehicle. Remote routes may justify extra food, water, blankets, and a larger battery pack because help may take longer to arrive. Check the weather, road conditions, and traffic before departure, as NHTSA and AAA advise.

Passengers, children, and pets

Add child-appropriate food, spare diapers, wipes, and comfort items when relevant. Keep pet water, a collapsible bowl, a leash, and any required medication in a separate pouch. These additions should not displace the basic safety equipment needed by everyone.

How to organize and maintain the kit

Use two storage zones

Keep immediately useful items accessible from the passenger compartment: phone charger, flashlight, reflective device, first-aid kit, gloves, and a small amount of water. Store bulkier supplies such as the jack, tools, blanket, food, and seasonal gear in the cargo area where they remain reachable without unloading the entire vehicle. Do not bury the kit under luggage, and secure heavy objects so they cannot become projectiles in a collision.

Inspect it at least once each season

AAA Club Alliance recommends checking the kit at least once per season. During each inspection:

What to do when the vehicle is stranded

  1. Move out of danger if possible. Pull as far right as you can, away from moving traffic. Stop on a firm, visible area rather than a live lane or blind curve.
  2. Secure the vehicle. Turn on hazard lights, set the parking brake, and shut down the engine when appropriate.
  3. Stay inside and buckle up. AAA Club Alliance advises remaining in the vehicle with seat belts fastened while waiting, particularly on high-speed roads. Keep doors locked and do not stand behind or beside the car in traffic.
  4. Call for assistance. Use emergency services for injuries, immediate danger, fire, or a hazardous location. Otherwise contact roadside assistance, a tow provider, or someone who can reach you. Give your location using a road number, direction of travel, nearby exit, landmark, or map reference.
  5. Use warning devices only when safe. If you can place triangles or flares without entering traffic, position them according to local requirements. If not, leave them stored and remain inside.
  6. Attempt a repair only after assessing risk. A battery jump or tire change is optional; no repair is worth exposure to traffic, lightning, extreme cold, smoke, or unstable ground.

Keep water, warmth, and communication supplies with you in the passenger compartment while you wait. If the vehicle must be evacuated because of fire, flooding, or another immediate hazard, follow emergency instructions and move well away from traffic.

Buying a preassembled kit versus building your own

A preassembled roadside kit is a reasonable starting point because official and AAA checklists overlap on many physical supplies. Before relying on one, open it and verify every component. Compare kits by contents rather than package size or marketing claims:

Comparison point Questions to ask
Actual contents Does it include a real flashlight, first-aid supplies, warning devices, gloves, and useful tools, or mostly small accessories?
Warning equipment Are there reflective triangles, flares, or another device suitable for your roads and local rules?
Battery support Are jumper cables included, and is a jump starter’s voltage and peak output compatible with your vehicle?
Tire equipment Does it contain a pressure gauge and tools that fit your car, and do you still need a jack or spare?
Seasonal suitability Can the bag accommodate snow, rain, heat, or remote-route supplies?
Storage and access Will it fit securely while leaving the flashlight and first-aid kit reachable?

Building your own kit takes longer but lets you match the vehicle, climate, passengers, and route precisely. Neither approach guarantees safety; preparation reduces avoidable problems while professional help remains the right answer for hazardous or complex failures.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming maintenance prevents every breakdown: A serviced vehicle can still suffer a puncture, dead battery, collision, or severe-weather delay.
  • Buying incompatible equipment: Verify jack points, lug-nut size, battery-access instructions, and spare-tire limitations in the owner’s manual.
  • Leaving critical items inaccessible: A flashlight under tightly packed luggage is not available when you need it.
  • Ignoring power and expiration dates: Dead batteries, uncharged jump starters, spoiled food, and expired medical supplies turn a checklist into false confidence.
  • Repairing in a traffic lane: Visibility and personal safety take priority over saving a tow call.
  • Treating duct tape or a sealant kit as a permanent repair: Use temporary measures only to reach a safe repair facility, if the vehicle remains safe to drive.
