For a basic flu-care kit, buy a digital thermometer, keep drinks within easy reach, stock tissues, and consider age-appropriate cough drops or throat spray. Acetaminophen or ibuprofen can ease fever and aches when the label says they are appropriate, but neither cures influenza. Add soap, cleaning supplies, and masks to reduce spread through the household.
A thermometer measures temperature; it does not diagnose flu. Most mild cases can be managed at home, while people at higher risk of complications should contact a health care professional promptly about prescription antivirals. The warning signs later in this guide require medical attention rather than another over-the-counter product.
This guide follows U.S. guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and MedlinePlus. Product labels can differ by age, formulation, and active ingredients, so read the package every time.

| Item | What it is for | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Digital thermometer | Checking temperature and spotting changes that may need medical advice | It cannot confirm or rule out influenza |
| Drinks and easy access to fluids | Replacing fluids while fever, sweating, vomiting, or poor appetite make dehydration more likely | No universal quantity or special beverage is required by the cited guidance |
| Tissues | Covering coughs and sneezes and disposing of secretions | Used tissues should go straight into a bin, followed by hand hygiene |
| Cough drops or throat spray | Optional temporary sore-throat comfort | Check the label, ingredients, and minimum age |
| Acetaminophen or ibuprofen | Optional relief of fever and body aches | Use only as directed for the person and formulation; avoid duplicate active ingredients |
| Soap, hand sanitizer, cleaner, and masks | Reducing spread to other household members | These are prevention supplies, not flu treatments |
The CDC’s archived home-preparedness material includes a thermometer among useful household supplies. MedlinePlus lists fluids, tissues, throat-relief products, acetaminophen, and ibuprofen as practical home-care options in its flu overview.
Core monitoring and comfort supplies
Digital thermometer
A readable digital thermometer is the most useful single purchase because temperature is a common flu symptom and helps you describe a change to a clinician. Choose a device with clear instructions and a design suitable for the intended person’s age. Follow its placement, cleaning, and waiting-time directions rather than comparing readings from different techniques.
Record the temperature, time, and whether a fever-reducing medicine was taken. That context matters: a lower reading after medicine does not show that the infection has ended. A normal reading also does not exclude flu, because not everyone with influenza has a fever.
Do not use a thermometer as a diagnosis. A test, clinical assessment, or both may be needed to identify influenza or another respiratory illness. Seek urgent help for the warning signs in this guide even if the thermometer reading is not high.
Fluids and an easy way to reach them
MedlinePlus advises drinking plenty of liquids. Put water or other usual drinks where the sick person can reach them without repeatedly walking through shared rooms. Small, frequent drinks may be easier than a large glass when nausea, fatigue, or a sore throat makes drinking difficult.
The cited guidance does not set one fluid volume that suits every adult or child, and it does not require a particular drink. Follow a clinician’s instructions if the person has a condition that limits fluid intake. For a child, watch behavior, mouth moisture, tears, and urination rather than relying on a single number on a bottle.

Tissues and a lined bin
Tissues make cough and sneeze hygiene practical. Keep a box beside the bed or sofa and a lined wastebasket nearby. CDC advice is to cover coughs and sneezes, discard used tissues, and clean hands afterward. If tissues are unavailable, coughing or sneezing into the elbow is preferable to using bare hands.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCough drops and throat spray
These products are optional comfort measures for a scratchy or painful throat; they do not shorten influenza. Read the active ingredients, directions, warnings, and minimum age. Some lozenges are choking hazards for young children, and sprays may not be suitable for every age or medical condition. Stop and ask a pharmacist or clinician if the product causes a reaction or the throat pain is severe.
Using over-the-counter medicine safely
Acetaminophen and ibuprofen may lower fever and relieve aches, according to MedlinePlus. They are symptom-relief medicines, not antiviral treatment. Select a product only after checking the person’s age, the exact formulation, health conditions, allergies, and other medicines.
| Question before buying | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| What is the active ingredient? | Different brand names can contain the same medicine, and combination cold products may add another dose of it. |
| Is the formulation labeled for this age? | Liquid concentrations, chewables, tablets, and extended-release products are not interchangeable. |
| Does the person have a chronic condition, allergy, pregnancy, or regular medicines? | A pharmacist or clinician may need to recommend a different option or advise against one. |
| What does the package schedule say? | Labels specify dose limits and timing for that particular product; a general adult regimen is not safe advice for everyone. |
Prevent accidental double dosing
Read the active-ingredient panel on every fever, pain, cough, and cold product. A multi-symptom product may already contain acetaminophen, so adding a separate acetaminophen product can unintentionally exceed the label limit. Keep a written record of what was given and when, especially when more than one caregiver is involved.
Children and teenagers
Never give aspirin to a child or teenager to treat flu. MedlinePlus also says not to give over-the-counter cold medicines to children younger than 4; for children ages 4 to 6, use them only when a health care provider recommends them. Ibuprofen should not be given to a child younger than 6 months unless a provider directs it.

When to ask before taking anything
Pause and obtain professional advice if the person is pregnant, has liver or kidney disease, a history of stomach bleeding, an allergy to a pain reliever, takes blood thinners or other regular medicines, or has a chronic condition that is getting worse. Ask about the correct product when the person cannot swallow, is vomiting repeatedly, or may be dehydrated.
Supplies that reduce household spread
Flu-care shopping should include prevention items when someone shares a home with others. CDC recommendations include staying home while sick, washing hands often, cleaning frequently touched surfaces and objects, and improving indoor air. A mask is an additional layer when people must be near one another.
Hand hygiene
Keep soap and water available at sinks. Hand sanitizer is a backup when soap and water are not available, not a reason to skip washing when hands are visibly dirty. Place sanitizer where caregivers enter and leave the sick person’s room, and supervise young children so it is used safely.

Cleaning and laundry
Use the cleaner according to its label and give special attention to frequently touched objects such as door handles, remote controls, phones, and faucet handles. Do not mix cleaning chemicals. Handle tissues and laundry in a way that avoids shaking secretions into the air, then wash hands.
Cleaner indoor air
When weather, building design, and safety allow, increase ventilation or use the home’s air-cleaning equipment as directed. Cleaner air lowers exposure to respiratory particles but does not replace staying home, hand hygiene, or medical care.
Masks
A well-fitting mask can reduce spread when the sick person and caregiver are sharing a room or when the sick person must leave home for care. Use it according to its instructions, replace it when wet or soiled, and do not put a mask on a child who cannot remove it safely. A mask is a prevention measure, not a treatment for fever or cough.

Who should contact a clinician about antivirals
Most people with mild flu do not need medical care or antiviral medicine. The decision changes for people at higher risk of complications, including young children, adults 65 and older, pregnant people, and people with certain chronic health conditions. Anyone in a higher-risk group who develops flu-like symptoms should contact a health care provider promptly rather than waiting to see whether a household product helps.
CDC describes antivirals as prescription medicines. They work best when started within one to two days after symptoms begin and are recommended promptly for people at higher risk or who are very sick. Treatment may shorten the time sick by about one day; it is not a guaranteed cure and does not make home monitoring unnecessary. Details are in the CDC pages on flu treatment and antiviral drugs.
When calling, have the symptom start date, temperature readings, current medicines, medical conditions, pregnancy status, and age available. Do not delay a call while shopping for a thermometer or waiting for an over-the-counter test.
Warning signs in adults
Get prompt medical attention for any of the following adult warning signs identified by CDC. Emergency services may be appropriate for severe or rapidly worsening symptoms.
- Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath.
- Persistent pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen.
- Persistent dizziness, confusion, or inability to wake.
- Seizures.
- Not urinating.
- Severe muscle pain.
- Severe weakness or unsteadiness.
- A fever or cough that improves and then returns or worsens.
- A worsening chronic medical condition.
These signs are not an exhaustive list. New severe symptoms, a concerning change in appearance or behavior, or an inability to keep fluids down also warrants professional advice.
Warning signs in children
Children can deteriorate differently from adults. CDC’s child warning list includes:

- Fast or difficult breathing.
- Bluish lips or face, or ribs pulling in with each breath.
- Chest pain.
- Severe muscle pain, such as refusing to walk.
- Dehydration signs: no urine for eight hours, a dry mouth, or no tears when crying.
- Not alert or not interacting while awake.
- Seizures.
- Fever above 104°F that is not controlled by fever-reducing medicine.
- Any fever in a child younger than 12 weeks.
- A fever or cough that improves and then returns or worsens.
- A worsening chronic medical condition.
The CDC’s current respiratory-illness warning guidance is available at About Respiratory Illnesses. Because the list is not all-inclusive, seek care for any symptom that looks severe or unusual for that child.
A practical first-day care plan
- Note the start time. Write down when symptoms began. This helps a clinician judge whether antiviral treatment is within the period when it works best.
- Check temperature correctly. Use the thermometer according to its instructions and record the reading, time, and any fever medicine given.
- Set up fluids and rest. Place drinks, tissues, a lined bin, and the person’s approved medicines within easy reach. Encourage rest and fluids without forcing a fixed quantity.
- Review medicines before each dose. Confirm the active ingredient, age directions, interval, maximum on the label, and whether another product contains the same ingredient.
- Separate the sick person where practical. Improve airflow, wash hands, clean shared surfaces, and use a mask when close contact is unavoidable.
- Screen for risk and warning signs. Contact a clinician promptly for a higher-risk person or anyone who is very sick. Seek urgent care for the adult or child signs listed above.
Staying home and returning to normal activities
CDC guidance says a person may return to normal activities when symptoms have been improving overall and there has been no fever, without using fever-reducing medicine, for at least 24 hours. CDC also advises taking extra precautions for the next five days, such as improving airflow, masking around others, practicing careful hygiene, and avoiding close contact with people at higher risk.
The CDC flu-specific page cited for 2024 adds that a person with suspected or confirmed flu who does not have a fever should stay home from work for at least five days after symptom onset. Because public-health recommendations can change and workplaces or schools may have their own rules, check the current CDC advice before returning. The relevant CDC pages are Flu: What To Do If You Get Sick and About Respiratory Illnesses.
How to choose products without overbuying
Thermometer checklist
- Readable display that the caregiver can see in dim light.
- Instructions that explain the measurement site, cleaning, and error messages.
- Age suitability for every person who may use it.
- A battery or power arrangement that can be maintained.
Do not pay for a feature merely because it sounds diagnostic. The useful function is a reliable temperature reading interpreted alongside symptoms and behavior.
Medicine checklist
- Match the active ingredient and formulation to the person, not just the package’s front label.
- Check age restrictions before placing a product in a child’s kit.
- Keep measuring devices supplied with liquid medicines.
- Store products as directed and check expiration dates.
- Keep a current list of prescription and nonprescription medicines to show a pharmacist.
Mask and hygiene checklist
- Choose a mask that fits closely without blocking breathing.
- Follow the package’s wearing, reuse, and disposal instructions.
- Buy enough soap, tissues, and cleaning supplies for the household’s normal use rather than assuming a product treats flu.
No brand ranking or product-performance test establishes that one consumer product is superior for flu care. Compare the functional criteria above and the instructions on the package.
What not to put in the kit
- Do not stock aspirin for treating flu in children or teenagers.
- Do not rely on adult doses for a child.
- Do not combine multiple cold and pain products without checking active ingredients.
- Do not treat a thermometer reading as proof of influenza.
- Do not postpone care for a high-risk person while waiting for a product, home test, or lower temperature.
- Do not use comfort products as a substitute for emergency evaluation when breathing, hydration, alertness, or chest symptoms are deteriorating.
A small, organized kit works better than a large collection of medicines: monitor temperature, support fluids and rest, relieve symptoms only within label directions, limit household spread, and escalate care when risk or warning signs justify it.
