Give an AI assistant a factual snapshot of your computer, the exact behavior, when it occurs, any messages or codes, recent changes, and the steps you have already tried. Describe what you observed rather than asserting a cause. This context lets the assistant separate a hardware or peripheral problem from an operating-system, driver, network, service, or application issue and suggest safer next checks.

Start with the computer and its environment

An AI cannot reliably interpret a symptom without knowing what device and software produced it. Put the machine’s identity and operating context near the start of your request.

Identify the PC

  • Give the manufacturer and model, if known. A model number is more useful than a general description such as “my laptop.”
  • State the operating system and version or build, such as the Windows edition and build number. If you use another operating system, name it and include its version.
  • Say whether the computer is your personal device or managed by an employer, school, or another organization. Management policies can block settings, updates, driver changes, or diagnostic tools.
  • List peripherals that are relevant to the symptom: monitors, docks, printers, external drives, USB devices, headsets, cameras, controllers, or recently connected hardware.
  • Include relevant network context, such as wired or Wi-Fi connection, home or corporate network, VPN use, and whether other devices can connect.

If you do not know a model or build number, say that it is unknown instead of guessing. The assistant can suggest where to find it, but an incorrect value can send troubleshooting in the wrong direction.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Describe what happens, not what you think caused it

Write the symptom in plain language and state the expected result. “The display goes black for about ten seconds when I wake the laptop, then returns” is more useful than “the graphics driver is broken.” A suspected cause is only a hypothesis unless testing has established it.

Include the visible behavior

  • Explain exactly what appears on screen, what sound you hear, or what the hardware does.
  • Say whether the computer becomes slow, freezes, restarts, shuts down, shows a blank screen, loses audio, drops a connection, or merely reports an error.
  • Identify the application, file, website, device, or task involved.
  • State what still works. For example, if one application fails but the desktop and other applications remain usable, say so.

State the expected result

Describe the action you intended and the result you expected. This gives the AI a clear comparison point and helps distinguish a defect from a setting or compatibility limitation.

Give timing, recurrence, and scope

Time and pattern often narrow the problem more effectively than a long list of guesses. Include when the issue began, when it last occurred, and how often it appears.

  • Give a date or approximate time of onset.
  • Say whether it happens constantly, intermittently, or only once.
  • Describe any repeatable trigger: waking from sleep, starting a game, joining a video call, printing, opening a particular file, connecting a device, or installing an update.
  • Report whether it follows a time pattern, such as after the computer has been running for an hour.
  • Say whether the issue affects one computer or several.
  • For a multi-device or network problem, identify which devices and users are affected.
  • Explain the impact: a blocked task, inability to start the computer, loss of connectivity, data risk, or an inconvenience that has a workaround.

For a freeze, include what operation was underway at the moment of the freeze and how many computers show the behavior. These details are specifically useful in the diagnostic questions Microsoft uses for freeze investigations.

Preserve exact errors and diagnostic clues

Copy complete error text exactly, including capitalization, punctuation, numbers, stop codes, and named modules. Do not paraphrase a code that may be the most actionable part of the report.

Stop screens and crashes

A Windows stop-error screen may display a stop code and, when available, a module name. Include both. Hardware, drivers, and software can all contribute to a stop error, so the code is evidence for investigation, not proof that one component is responsible.

Windows update failures

Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history and find the failed update’s specific error code. Include the update name or knowledge-base number if shown, the date, and whether the failure repeats. A generic statement such as “the update rolled back” gives an AI less to work with than the underlying code.

Screenshots and transitory messages

Use a screenshot when a message disappears before you can copy it. Check that the image includes the complete dialog or stop screen and does not expose passwords, personal documents, email addresses, product keys, or unrelated private information. If text can be selected, pasted text is usually easier for an AI to analyze than an image.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Explain what changed before the problem appeared

Make a short timeline of changes near the onset. A change is a clue, not a confirmed cause.

  • Hardware added, removed, moved, or replaced.
  • Driver or software installation, removal, or upgrade.
  • Operating-system or firmware update.
  • Settings changes, including display, power, security, startup, or network settings.
  • Location or network changes, such as moving from home Wi-Fi to an office network or enabling a VPN.
  • Changes to the affected application, account, file location, or connected service.

Use wording such as “The problem first appeared after I connected a second monitor.” Avoid “The monitor broke Windows” unless a controlled test has actually established that relationship.

Record every troubleshooting attempt and its result

List each action already taken and what happened afterward. Include unsuccessful attempts; they prevent an AI from recommending the same step without learning anything new.

  • Name the action precisely, such as restarting, disconnecting a device, installing a driver, running a built-in troubleshooter, changing a setting, or testing another cable.
  • State whether the symptom disappeared, changed, returned later, or stayed exactly the same.
  • Include the time or number of repetitions when that helps establish a pattern.
  • Note any side effect, such as a lost setting, unavailable application, or new error.

Do not claim that a fix worked merely because the problem did not appear once afterward. Say “It has not recurred during three restarts” or another precise observation, then continue monitoring if the issue is intermittent.

Use a compact request format

The following structure gives an AI enough context without burying the symptom in a long narrative. Replace each code-formatted item with your information.

I’m using a <PC make and model> with <operating system, version/build>.
It is a <personal or managed> computer. Relevant peripherals/network: <details>.
Since <date or nearby change>, <specific observable symptom> happens <frequency or pattern> when I <action>.
I expected <expected result>. The exact message or code is: <complete text/code>.
It affects <one device, multiple devices, one app, or the whole system> and blocks <task or impact>.
Before it began, I <relevant hardware, software, update, setting, or environment change>.
I tried <step 1> and the result was <outcome>; then I tried <step 2> and the result was <outcome>.
Please separate observations from possible causes and suggest the safest next diagnostic step.

That final sentence is useful because it asks the AI to reason from evidence rather than present a guess as a diagnosis.

Tailor the details to the kind of failure

Freezes and unresponsive computers

Report which computer freezes, the operation in progress, how often it happens, and whether one or several computers are affected. Say whether the mouse, keyboard, audio, or network remains responsive. If Windows recovers, record how long recovery took. If it requires a forced shutdown, say so and note whether the next startup shows a warning.

When asked for supporting evidence, check the relevant System and Application logs in Event Viewer and provide the event time, source, event ID, and message around the freeze. Do not paste an unrelated full log dump when a few relevant entries will answer the question.

Stop errors and unexpected restarts

Include the stop code, named module if present, time of the crash, what was running, and whether the computer restarted automatically. Mention recent hardware, driver, and software changes. A stop code can guide investigation but does not by itself identify a single failed component.

Update failures

Provide the failed update’s name, date, and exact error code from Update history. Say whether the update downloads, installs partially, reverts, or fails immediately. Include any restart requirement and whether the same code appears on repeated attempts.

Connectivity and service problems

Identify the affected network or service, connection type, location, and scope. State whether other devices work on the same network, whether the problem follows the computer to another network, and whether a VPN or security product is active. Include the exact browser or application message rather than only “the internet is down.”

One application or workflow

Name the application and version if visible, the exact task that fails, the file or account involved, and whether another file or account works. Note whether the operating system and other applications remain normal. This helps separate an application-specific fault from a system-wide failure.

Diagnostic axis What to report Why it matters
Scope One machine or several; one account, application, or the entire operating system Separates local faults from shared service, network, or policy problems
Pattern Constant or intermittent; trigger, time pattern, and recurrence Shows whether the issue can be reproduced and under what conditions
Layer Hardware or peripheral, operating system or driver, connectivity or service, or application Prevents unrelated fixes from being applied at the wrong level
Evidence type Observation, exact code, event-log entry, screenshot, or diagnostic file Indicates how specific the available lead is and how sensitive the material may be
Effort and risk Checks already performed and whether a proposed action could change settings or data Encourages low-impact observations before reinstalling, resetting, or replacing components

Share logs and memory dumps selectively

Only provide diagnostic files when the AI or support person explains which file is needed and gives an appropriate channel. A complete Windows memory dump records system memory when the computer stops unexpectedly. It can include data from processes that were running at capture time, so it may contain information beyond the visible error.

  • Prefer a support-directed upload or transfer method over a public forum or open link.
  • Ask what portion of a log is required and whether sensitive fields can be removed.
  • Review screenshots and text for passwords, authentication tokens, private messages, customer data, personal documents, and license keys.
  • Do not upload a full dump simply because it exists. Confirm that the recipient can handle it and that the file is necessary.

If an AI service cannot accept a sensitive artifact through a controlled channel, summarize the relevant event, timestamp, source, and code instead.

Avoid common request mistakes

  • Starting with a diagnosis: “My graphics card is dead” can hide other possibilities. Lead with the behavior and evidence.
  • Leaving out the expected result: Without it, an assistant cannot tell a defect from an intentional security or compatibility behavior.
  • Using vague timing: “It sometimes happens” omits whether the trigger is sleep, startup, a particular application, or a time of day.
  • Omitting failed attempts: The next recommendation may repeat work you have already done.
  • Copying only part of an error: The omitted code or module name may be the most useful clue.
  • Combining unrelated symptoms: Separate a printer issue from a shutdown issue unless they share a documented timeline.
  • Performing high-impact fixes too early: Reinstalling, resetting, or changing drivers can create new variables. Gather low-risk observations first and ask what a step changes.

Example of a useful AI request

“I’m using a personal desktop with Windows 11; the model is shown as [model information]. Since I installed a graphics driver on 12 October, the computer freezes about ten minutes after launching one game. The display remains visible, but the mouse and keyboard stop responding and the computer requires a forced shutdown. There is no stop screen. Other applications have worked normally, and a second computer on the same network is unaffected. I removed and reinstalled the game, with no change. Please treat the driver installation as a possible clue rather than a confirmed cause, and suggest the safest way to collect the next relevant evidence.”

This example gives identity, timing, trigger, observable behavior, scope, impact, a recent change, and a tested step without claiming that the driver is definitely responsible.

Use an iterative conversation instead of one giant upload

After the first response, answer the AI’s follow-up questions with the same precision. If it asks whether another device works, test that specific comparison and report the result. If it requests an event entry, provide the timestamp, source, event ID, and message it asked for rather than an unrelated archive.

Keep a running record of new tests and outcomes. When a proposed step changes the symptom, report exactly how: did the freeze stop, occur less often, move to a different action, or return after a restart? This prevents the conversation from treating a temporary absence as a confirmed repair.

Know when AI guidance is not enough

An AI can help structure evidence and suggest diagnostic checks, but it cannot see your hardware or establish a cause from a code alone. Stop and seek qualified human or organizational support when the issue involves possible data loss, electrical or physical damage, a managed-work policy, repeated crashes that prevent safe use, or a diagnostic file that contains sensitive information. Follow the support provider’s instructions for the channel and artifacts it accepts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The most useful request is not the longest one. It is a chronological, testable account that lets the helper distinguish what you observed, what changed, what you tried, and what remains unknown.
