A strong student-competition pitch deck makes one evidence-backed case: a specific customer has an important problem, your venture solves it in a differentiated way, customers have shown credible interest, the economics can work, this team can execute, and the judges’ requested help will produce a defined next step. Build that story around the competition’s current rules rather than copying a universal slide template. The practical sequence below covers the content judges repeatedly evaluate while leaving room for each event’s slide limit, timing and submission requirements.
Start with the competition rules, not a template
Rules vary enough that a deck that fits one university can fail another event’s submission requirements. Read the official page and rubric before writing slide copy. Confirm each item below:
- Maximum slide count, whether a cover slide counts, and the required file type.
- Presentation length, Q&A length, and whether timing is enforced.
- Whether the event requires a presentation deck, a written business plan, or both.
- Who may present and whether judges receive slides before the live pitch.
- Any required sections, eligibility statements, intellectual-property disclosures or appendices.
For example, the University of Nebraska–Lincoln says a pitch deck or presentation is required but does not prescribe a format; its FAQ recommends planning eight to ten slides for a 10-minute pitch. UCLA’s Knapp Venture Competition requires 10 slides plus a cover slide. Seattle University specifies a maximum 10-minute presentation followed by five minutes of questions. These are examples, not a common standard. Check the current rules for your event at Nebraska, UCLA and Seattle University.

Also separate the live presentation from a deeper written submission. Rice’s competitor resources distinguish the presentation deck from the required business plan, while Nebraska says a business plan is recommended but not required. A live deck must be readable from the room; a business plan can carry detailed research, calculations and operating assumptions that would overwhelm a slide. See the current Rice resources and your own event’s instructions before deciding what belongs in an appendix or separate document.

The story judges need to follow
Across university competitions, judges repeatedly look for five answers: what problem exists and for whom; what the solution does and why it is better than current alternatives; what evidence supports demand and market access; how the venture can become commercially viable; and why this team can execute the next plan. UC Davis lists problem/solution/value proposition, customer and market, business model and plan, team biographies and presentation. San José State includes customer validation and commercial viability in its criteria. Those are recurring evaluation axes, not a promise that every event gives them equal weight. Use your competition’s rubric to set the emphasis.
The following sequence works as a content framework. Compress or expand it to fit the permitted format.
1. Cover and one-sentence promise
Use the cover for the venture name, a short descriptive promise, presenter names and the required affiliation or contact information. Your first spoken sentence should identify the customer and the outcome, not merely repeat a slogan. For example: “We help independent clinics reduce missed appointments by making two-way text scheduling simple.” The sentence gives judges a reference point for every later slide.
2. The problem and the customer
Describe a concrete pain, risk or unmet opportunity and identify who experiences it. Distinguish the user from the economic buyer when they differ. Explain the existing workflow, its cost or consequence, and how often the problem occurs. A short customer quote can help if you have permission and can identify its context; do not present an isolated anecdote as proof of a broad market.
Show why the problem matters now. Villanova’s competition guidance includes “why now” among possible content, alongside company purpose, problem, solution, market size and competition. A change in regulation, technology, behavior or cost may explain timing, but label the point as a documented condition or as your team’s hypothesis. Do not manufacture urgency with an unsourced trend statistic.

3. Solution and value proposition
Show what the product or service actually does. A simple workflow diagram, product screenshot or short demonstration is usually clearer than a feature list. Tie each important capability to the customer problem: what changes for the user, what improves for the buyer, and what measurable result you expect.
State the value proposition in one sentence and then explain the mechanism behind it. If the product is still a prototype, say what exists today and what remains unbuilt. Avoid claiming superiority that you have not tested. Judges should be able to tell the difference between a current capability, a planned feature and a hoped-for outcome.

4. Customer discovery and validation
Evidence makes the problem and solution credible. Use the strongest evidence you actually have, such as structured interviews, a pilot, repeated usage, paid orders, a letter of intent or retention data. State who supplied the evidence, when, how many participants were involved and what action they took. A small but well-described pilot is more persuasive than a large, unexplained number.
Explain what you learned and what changed as a result. If interviews revealed a different buyer, pricing objection or use case, show the decision your team made. Distinguish a stated intention (“I would use this”) from behavior (a trial, signed agreement or payment). If validation is early, identify the next test and the pass/fail measure rather than implying that demand is proven.
5. Target segment and market size
Define the reachable customer segment before presenting a market number. Explain the geography, customer type, use case and buying authority included in your estimate. Show the calculation and assumptions—for example, number of eligible organizations multiplied by a realistic annual price—rather than placing an unexplained total on a slide.

Separate a broad theoretical market from the segment you can serve in the next stage. State which figures come from a named source and year, and which are your own estimates. The official competition pages reviewed do not establish a general statistic about student pitch decks or competition outcomes, so do not decorate this section with generic startup-growth rates or success percentages. A transparent estimate with limitations is safer than false precision.

“No competition” usually means the analysis is incomplete. List the ways customers solve the problem today: an incumbent product, an adjacent service, an internal process or doing nothing. Compare only criteria that matter to the buyer, such as setup time, workflow fit, accuracy, compliance or total cost.
Explain the defensible difference and how you will maintain it. This might be proprietary data, an integration, a specialized process, switching-cost advantages, distribution access or intellectual property. UCLA lists intellectual-property status and competitive differentiation as possible content, so include your IP position when it is relevant: what is filed, owned, licensed or still an open risk. Do not call an idea “patented” unless the filing or grant actually exists.
7. Business model and route to market
Make the money flow easy to understand. Identify who pays, what they buy, how often they pay and the event that triggers revenue. For a marketplace or multi-sided product, identify each paying side and the transaction or fee mechanism. Present pricing as a current proposal or tested price, not as an established willingness to pay unless customers have demonstrated it.
Then show how the venture will reach those customers. Name the first practical channel—direct outreach, campus partnerships, a distributor, a self-serve funnel or another route—and explain why the channel fits the buyer. Include the key sales or adoption step, expected cycle and any dependency such as certification or integration. A concise unit-economics view can include acquisition cost, gross margin or payback only when you can explain the calculation and its source.

8. Progress, milestones and roadmap
Give judges a dated view of what is real now and what comes next. Useful milestones include a working prototype, pilot completion, launch, repeat usage, revenue, regulatory approval or a signed distribution agreement. Put dates, owners and success measures beside the next milestones. If a date is a target rather than a commitment, label it as such.
Connect the roadmap to the venture’s main risks. For example, a technical milestone may retire performance risk, while a paid pilot tests willingness to pay. Avoid a long feature backlog; show the few events that must occur for the business model to become viable.
9. Team and roles
Introduce the people responsible for the next stage, not just impressive biographies. Give each founder’s role, relevant technical or domain experience and the evidence that person can perform it. Explain how the team gained customer access, built the prototype or understands the problem. Identify a material capability gap and the plan to fill it when that gap affects execution.
Keep bios brief on the slide and put longer credentials in speaker notes or a required written plan. Judges need role clarity and founder–problem fit more than a list of unrelated awards.
10. Financial assumptions
Show the assumptions that drive your forecast: price, number of customers, conversion or adoption, delivery cost, staffing, timing and any capital requirement. A small table can make the model auditable:

Desk wire organizer is also suitable for use in the kitchen and outdoors.
- 【Reduce Safety Risks】Cable tray under desk keeps all plugs away from your kids, no more worry about tripping. Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.
| Assumption | What to show |
|---|---|
| Revenue | Price, payer, purchase frequency and the customer count or usage behind the estimate |
| Costs | Major variable and fixed costs, with one-time items separated from recurring expenses |
| Timing | Launch, sales cycle, hiring or regulatory dates that affect cash flow |
| Scenario | Base case and the key condition that would make the outcome higher or lower |
Label every figure as historical performance, a quoted cost, a sourced market input or the team’s estimate. Do not imply that a forecast is a result. Judges are testing whether you understand the causal links and risks, not whether you can display many decimal places.
11. The specific ask
End with a request that a judge can act on. The Stu Clark New Venture Championships’ official guidance says teams should clearly articulate the “ASK”—what they are seeking from the judging panel—and notes that it may be financial or another specific need. State the amount or resource, the use, the milestone it funds and the decision or introduction you want next. For prize money, break the use into a few concrete categories such as prototype development, a pilot, compliance work or customer acquisition; do not promise outcomes that the amount cannot support.
A request for “support” is too vague. A request such as “a $5,000 award to complete a 90-day pilot with three clinics, plus an introduction to two clinic networks” gives judges a clear way to evaluate fit.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Choose a slide count that fits the event
When rules allow flexibility, an eight-to-ten-slide plan can fit a 10-minute pitch if each slide advances one decision. A possible allocation is:
| Slide | Primary job |
|---|---|
| Cover | Venture name, promise and presenters |
| 1 | Customer problem and why now |
| 2 | Solution and value proposition |
| 3 | Validation and customer learning |
| 4 | Target segment and market assumptions |
| 5 | Alternatives and differentiation |
| 6 | Business model and route to market |
| 7 | Progress and roadmap |
| 8 | Team and execution capability |
| 9 | Financial assumptions and ask |
This is a planning aid, not an instruction to exceed or ignore the event’s limit. If a cover counts toward UCLA’s required total, for instance, the allocation must be adjusted. If the competition requires fewer slides, combine related evidence without shrinking text to the point that a live audience cannot read it.
Design for a live room and a Q&A
Use one conclusion per slide, readable type, high-contrast charts and labels that explain what a number means. Put the source, date and assumption next to a market or financial figure. Do not make judges decode a screenshot, an unlabeled axis or a dense spreadsheet while you speak.
Rehearse to the published time limit with the actual presenters and file format. Prepare a short answer to each likely challenge: how validation was collected, why the segment is reachable, what customers use instead, what the largest cost is, what could stop the roadmap and how the requested resources change the next milestone. Seattle University’s format, for example, allows five minutes of Q&A after a 10-minute presentation; your event may differ, so practice the stated timing rather than assuming it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPre-submission checklist
- Every claim about customers, market size, pricing or performance has a source, date or plainly stated team assumption.
- The problem, buyer, user and desired outcome are unambiguous within the first two slides.
- Validation distinguishes interviews and intentions from pilots, usage, orders or payments.
- Alternatives include current behavior, and the differentiation is specific and defensible.
- Revenue, costs, timing and major risks connect logically to the roadmap.
- Team members have clear roles, and any execution gap has a plan.
- The ask names the resource, amount or decision, its use and the milestone it enables.
- The file, slide count, cover-slide treatment, presenter eligibility and written materials match the current competition rules.
- A full-speed rehearsal fits the limit, the deck remains legible on the competition screen and the final file opens correctly.
Use the rubric as the final editing filter: remove any slide that does not help a judge decide whether the problem matters, the solution is credible, the market is reachable, the business can work, the team can execute or the requested help is justified.
