Recovery after retinal gene therapy depends on the specific treatment. The clearest patient guidance here is for voretigene neparvovec-rzyl (LUXTURNA), a procedure for eligible people with confirmed mutations in both copies of the RPE65 gene and enough viable retinal cells. It is not a treatment for every inherited retinal condition. After Luxturna, expect close eye-care follow-up, temporary restrictions while an air bubble remains in the eye, and vision changes that may help with function without restoring normal sight. Rehabilitation may still help with daily tasks.
What should I expect after retinal gene therapy?
Luxturna is delivered by injection beneath the retina during eye surgery. The postoperative details below apply to this treatment, not automatically to other retinal gene therapies; procedures and recovery instructions can differ. Your surgical team’s instructions take precedence over general information.
Early care and follow-up
The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) says the treated eye is patched for 24–48 hours and that visits with the surgeon and retinal specialist are frequent during the initial postoperative period. Once a patient has been cleared to return home, CHOP recommends seeing a retinal specialist at least once a year. The manufacturer says follow-up may continue at the treatment center or with the patient’s original healthcare professional. CHOP’s Luxturna guidance and the official patient information describe these arrangements.
Positioning and treatment of the second eye
A US Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) coverage document describes patients remaining supine—as flat on their backs—as much as possible for the first 24 hours. It also describes sequential treatment of the other eye 6–18 days after the first. These are protocol details in a coverage document, not universal personal instructions or a guaranteed schedule. Ask your operating team exactly how to position yourself and when, or whether, a second-eye procedure is planned. CMS’s procedure description provides the context.

Prescribed medication
CMS’s procedure description includes a corticosteroid regimen starting before injection and continuing afterward. The exact medicines and schedule are clinician-directed. Follow your own written instructions; do not stop, change, or adjust prescribed medication without contacting your care team.
How long is recovery after Luxturna?
There is no single recovery duration established by the available guidance. The eye needs close early monitoring, and the air bubble used during the procedure can take one week or more to dissipate. That is not a clearance date: your clinician must confirm that the bubble is gone before you resume activities restricted because of it.

Recovery also means more than the bubble disappearing. Follow-up continues after the immediate postoperative period, and functional vision changes vary by person. Your surgeon and retinal specialist can advise you about your examination findings and when specific activities are appropriate.
Can I fly after Luxturna?
Not until your healthcare professional confirms that the air bubble formed in the eye has disappeared. The official patient information also says to avoid travel to high elevations and scuba diving until that confirmation. Because the bubble may take one week or more to dissipate, do not use a calendar estimate as clearance. Contact your care team before making travel plans or returning to these activities. See the manufacturer’s patient instructions.

What symptoms should I report promptly?
Official Luxturna safety information lists serious risks that include infection inside the eye (endophthalmitis), retinal abnormalities, retinal tear or detachment, increased pressure inside the eye, cataract formation or progression, and permanent decline in visual acuity. Contact your healthcare professional promptly for floaters, eye pain, flashes, or a change in vision such as decreased or blurred vision. These symptoms need assessment by your care team; this list cannot determine their cause. The official patient information describes the risks and when to seek help.
Handling treatment-related waste
For the first seven days after treatment, Luxturna patient information instructs patients to place waste from dressings, tears, and nasal secretions in sealed bags before disposal, because small quantities of product may be present in tears for a short time. This is a Luxturna-specific instruction, not general guidance for all retinal gene therapies. Follow the treatment team’s directions and the official patient information.

Will my vision come back?
Some people may gain functional vision, including better ability to navigate in dim light, but improvement is not guaranteed and does not mean normal visual acuity or complete recovery of lost vision. Mobility-test results describe groups of study participants, not an individual patient’s likely outcome.

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) describes a main study of 31 patients that tested how well participants navigated a route with turns and obstacles under different light levels. At one year, the treated group’s score improved by 1.8 points, compared with 0.2 points in the comparison group. At the lowest light level, 13 of 21 treated patients (62%) passed the test, compared with none of the untreated patients. The EMA says the improvement was maintained for at least three years. These are study findings, not a promise about an individual’s sight. Read the EMA’s Luxturna assessment.

Spark Therapeutics reports that 16 of 29 participants (55%) improved by at least two light levels on the Multi-Luminance Mobility Test. That is a study result reported by the manufacturer, not a universal response rate; the page does not state a year for the figure. The same page says follow-up observations would continue for up to 15 years. See the manufacturer’s clinical-trial summary.
Mobility is not the same as standard visual acuity
A better result on a low-light navigation test may matter in daily life, but it does not establish that a person can safely drive or resume another particular activity. Discuss activity decisions with your clinician and, where relevant, the licensing authority that applies to you. Your own baseline and follow-up assessments are more useful for personal decisions than a study average.
Do I still need low-vision rehabilitation after gene therapy?
Possibly. Treatment and rehabilitation serve different purposes: gene therapy may improve some aspects of functional vision, while rehabilitation can help a person make practical use of remaining vision. The available sources do not establish a mandatory Luxturna-specific rehabilitation schedule or a proportion of recipients who use or benefit from these services.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhen to ask about an assessment
If reading, household tasks, navigating unfamiliar places, or other daily activities remain difficult, ask your retinal specialist or primary eye-care professional whether a low-vision rehabilitation assessment is appropriate. A rehabilitation professional can match strategies and assistive technology to your vision and goals; no single device or approach is right for everyone.
What rehabilitation can include
General vision-loss services may involve low-vision therapy, occupational therapy, orientation and mobility instruction, rehabilitation teaching, assistive technology, or changes at home. The National Eye Institute describes these types of support, and a review of retinal gene therapy discusses occupational therapy and mobility-training referrals. These are general rehabilitation options, not a required Luxturna protocol. See the National Eye Institute’s vision-loss guidance and the review of retinal gene therapy.
