A college technology festival is usually a program of different events rather than one lecture or coding contest. Depending on the organizer, you may find hackathons, programming contests, project exhibitions, robotics, gaming, technical talks, workshops, startup pitches and an awards ceremony across one day or an entire week.
Your experience depends on the specific event you choose. Read the current official festival page for eligibility, registration, fees, locations, schedules, equipment rules and participant limits before you travel. The examples below show how much formats and requirements can vary.
What a college technology festival is
A technology festival brings several technology-focused activities under one campus program. Some activities are competitive and timed; others are demonstrations, presentations, discussions or practical workshops. You might attend only as an audience member, enter one competition, exhibit a project or combine several activities if their schedules do not overlap.

UTS Tech Fest at the University of Technology Sydney describes a week-long program at its Sydney City campus with industry panels, technology competitions, engineering and IT showcases, hackathons and an awards night. Its program highlights student-led projects and emerging-technology demonstrations in areas such as artificial intelligence, robotics, cybersecurity and gaming. The 2026 edition had concluded when its page was reviewed, and the page said the festival would return in 2027 without publishing 2027 dates.

IIUC CSE Fest’s 2026 program in Bangladesh listed programming contests, datathons, capture-the-flag (CTF) events, olympiads, gaming, a project showcase, a three-minute thesis format, workshops, seminars and keynotes. MGM University’s Supernova 2.0 catalog listed a project exhibition, startup pitches, a design hackathon, coding and debugging competitions, robotics, esports and a technical workshop. These are examples, not a promise that another college’s festival will offer the same events.
Which event formats you may encounter
| Format | What participants usually do | What to verify on the current event page |
|---|---|---|
| Hackathon or design hackathon | Build a software, hardware or design solution during a defined period, often with a final demonstration or pitch. | Team rules, challenge theme, duration, required equipment, submission format and judging criteria. |
| Programming, coding or debugging contest | Solve algorithmic problems or find and fix code issues under time limits. | Programming languages, platform access, individual or team eligibility, schedule and entry fee. |
| Datathon, olympiad or CTF | Analyze data, answer subject questions or solve cybersecurity challenges. | Prerequisites, permitted tools, account requirements, data or challenge access and rules on collaboration. |
| Project showcase or exhibition | Explain and demonstrate a completed student project to visitors, judges or an industry panel. | Whether the display is judged, poster or demo requirements, booth times, hardware rules and team limits. |
| Talks, seminars, keynotes and panels | Listen to researchers, practitioners, faculty or students discuss technology, careers or projects. | Room, capacity, registration, timing and whether questions or networking follow the session. |
| Workshop | Follow guided instruction and complete a practical activity. | Software installation, accounts, materials, laptop requirement, skill level and seat limits. |
| Robotics, gaming and esports | Watch demonstrations or enter robot, game or esports competitions. | Hardware supplied by the organizer, permitted controllers or devices, age or team restrictions and match schedule. |
| Startup pitch or three-minute thesis | Present a business idea or research project in a short, tightly timed format. | Pitch length, slide rules, judging rubric, eligibility and submission deadline. |
| Awards ceremony | Attend recognition for competition winners, showcases or festival contributions. | Whether attendance is required for finalists and when or where awards are announced. |
A single festival can run several of these formats simultaneously. A schedule may therefore contain conflicts, separate registration forms and different rules for each event.
What happens at a project showcase
A showcase is different from a timed coding round: students explain something they have built, tested or researched. UTS describes student project showcases and emerging-technology demonstrations, including games and robotics. IIUC lists a project showcase competition and a short research-presentation format. MGM University’s Supernova 2.0 catalog describes a hardware and software exhibition judged by industry panels.

What you may see
- Hardware prototypes, robots, sensors or other physical builds.
- Software applications, games, websites, data tools or cybersecurity demonstrations.
- Posters, slides or short research presentations, including a three-minute thesis-style explanation.
- Interactive stations where a presenter controls the demonstration or allows limited hands-on use.
Not every display is interactive. Some exhibits are presentation-based or reserved for judges, and an attendee cannot assume they may handle equipment or join a project team. Follow the exhibitor’s instructions and ask before touching a device.

How to evaluate a project quickly
- Identify the problem. Ask what user, community or technical problem the project addresses.
- Find out what was built. Clarify which parts are working software, physical hardware, a research prototype or a planned feature.
- Watch the demonstration. Notice the normal workflow, inputs, outputs and any stated limitations.
- Ask about a design trade-off. For example, ask why the team chose a particular sensor, model, programming approach or interface.
- Check the next step. Ask what the team would improve with more time, data or testing.
These questions are practical conversation starters, not formal rules imposed by every festival.
How networking fits into the festival
Networking can happen in an industry panel, partner activity, workshop, project booth or informal conversation between sessions. UTS describes industry panels and partner participation. UTKARSH says its students can connect with other students, faculty and industry professionals, while IIUC emphasizes bringing students together across universities and clubs.
The opportunity is real but the outcome is not guaranteed. Attendance does not promise a job, internship, mentorship, prize or lasting professional contact. Treat networking as an exchange of ideas and a way to understand other people’s work.
Low-pressure ways to start a conversation
- Ask a presenter to explain one technical choice you noticed in the demonstration.
- Introduce yourself to a speaker after a session and mention the specific point that interested you.
- Ask another participant which event they are entering and what they hope to learn.
- Exchange contact details only when both people want to, and state what you would like to follow up about.
Julie Jupp, Associate Professor in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Technology Sydney, described Tech Fest this way: “Tech Fest is exciting, it’s a great way to meet people, it’s a great way to exchange ideas and to importantly learn off others to solve complex problems.”

How to plan before you register
Use the organizer’s current event page as the authority. Festival pages and catalogs can change between editions, and different activities can have different requirements.
- Confirm eligibility. Check whether the event is limited to the host university, open to students from other institutions, restricted by year or course, or available to the public. IIUC’s 2026 FAQ said most events were open to university students across Bangladesh, but directed readers to each event’s details.
- List the events you actually want. Separate competitions, showcases, talks and workshops so you can see which require preparation and which you can attend casually.
- Compare the schedule and venues. Note room locations, travel time across campus and simultaneous sessions. IIUC said its events used different campus venues and that participants could enter multiple events when schedules did not conflict.
- Check registration and fees. Registration may use an event-specific form, and fees can differ within the same festival. Do not assume that a free keynote means every competition is free.
- Look for participant limits and deadlines. A workshop or competition may close registration before the general festival does.
- Read submission and equipment rules. Confirm file formats, software, permitted devices, team size, presentation length and any materials you must provide.
- Plan travel and accommodation. Verify whether food, lodging or travel support exists, who qualifies and what documents are required.
What to bring—and what not to assume
Bring equipment only when the particular event requires it. For the IIUC CSE Fest 2026, the official FAQ advised: “Bring your university ID, laptop (for applicable events), chargers, and any event-specific requirements mentioned on the event pages.” That is an event-specific instruction, not a universal festival rule.
- University ID: Carry it if the organizer uses it for registration or access.
- Laptop: Bring one for a hackathon, coding contest, datathon or workshop only when the event page calls for it. The available guidance does not specify a brand or minimum specification.
- Charger: Pack the charger for any laptop-based activity; no universal connector or wattage is established.
- Event-specific materials: Follow the individual page for components, presentation files, safety equipment, accounts or printed materials.
- Nothing extra for casual attendance: Someone attending talks or viewing exhibits may not need a laptop at all.
Keep backups of code, slides and presentation files in an approved location before traveling, and arrive early enough to find the correct room if the organizer assigns separate venues.

How to choose between overlapping activities
If you want to build
Prioritize a hackathon, design hackathon or workshop with enough time for setup and testing. Confirm team formation, software access and final-demo rules before registering.
If you want to demonstrate an existing project
Choose the project showcase or exhibition. Prepare a short explanation of the problem, architecture or method, demonstration path and limitations. Ask whether the organizer supplies tables, power, screens or poster space.
If you want competition practice
Compare programming, debugging, datathon, CTF and olympiad rules. Look for the scoring method, time limit, permitted tools and whether previous experience is expected.
If you want to learn or meet people
Reserve talks, panels, seminars and workshops, then leave transition time for questions and conversations. A packed schedule with no travel buffer can make it impossible to reach the next room.

What the day may feel like
Expect a mixture of scheduled sessions and open periods around booths or demonstrations. Competition participants may spend most of their time in a controlled room, while showcase visitors can move between displays. Panels and workshops may have fixed start times or limited seats, whereas a project exhibition may allow more flexible browsing.
At a booth, listen to the project’s short explanation first, then ask one focused question. At a panel, write down the speaker’s name and the idea you want to discuss afterward. If you are competing, follow the event’s official announcements for room changes, submission cutoffs and judging instructions rather than relying on informal messages.
What participation can—and cannot—promise
Festivals can expose you to unfamiliar tools, student work, faculty research, industry perspectives and peers from other institutions. They can also give you practice explaining a technical idea to someone who did not build it. Those are useful outcomes even if you do not win or make a professional contact.
Organizer-reported figures illustrate the scale one edition can reach without defining the category as a whole. Swarnandhra College of Engineering and Technology reported that UTKARSH 2026 had 600-plus participants from 45-plus colleges, 17 events and a ₹2 lakh prize pool. These numbers were published by the organizer for that edition and were not independently audited; no broad statistic for college technology festivals overall is established here.
Do not infer that every festival offers prizes, career opportunities, accommodation or a particular number of attendees. Verify the specific promise in the current organizer announcement.
