Most people who receive an injected flu vaccine have no serious problems. Normal short-term reactions can include soreness, redness or swelling where the needle went in, headache, fever, muscle aches, nausea and tiredness. They usually start soon after vaccination and are mild, but no source can promise an exact time by which every symptom will be gone.
Get emergency help for hives, swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing, a fast heartbeat, dizziness or weakness. Those symptoms can signal a severe allergic reaction; call 9-1-1 or go to the nearest hospital.
Which reactions are normal after an injected flu shot?
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) describes several expected reactions to injectable influenza vaccines. They reflect the immune system responding to vaccination rather than an influenza infection. A person may have one symptom, several at once or none.

CDC consumer guidance says these problems generally begin soon after vaccination and are usually mild and short-lived. The guidance does not set one fixed number of hours or days that applies to every person or every reaction. The absence of a precise deadline matters: a symptom that is not improving, is getting worse or is worrying you deserves medical advice rather than a guess based on a calendar.

How soon do side effects start, and how should I monitor them?
Expect an early, limited reaction
Noticeable soreness or other symptoms commonly appear soon after the injection. Keep track of when a symptom started, whether it is improving and whether new symptoms are appearing. This simple record gives a healthcare professional more useful information if you need to call.
Do not use a fixed “normal” deadline
Because CDC does not guarantee that every reaction resolves on a set schedule, avoid treating a particular number of hours or days as a safety rule. Mild symptoms that are steadily improving are different from symptoms that persist without improvement, intensify or interfere substantially with normal activities. Contact a healthcare provider for concerns about your response.
Separate expected discomfort from an emergency pattern
Arm soreness, a mild fever, headache, muscle aches, nausea or fatigue by themselves fit the usual list of post-vaccination reactions. They do not explain away breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or throat, widespread hives, a fast heartbeat, marked dizziness or weakness. Those warning signs require emergency action.

Recognize possible severe allergy
CDC’s inactivated influenza Vaccine Information Statement (VIS), dated January 31, 2025, lists hives, swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing, a fast heartbeat, dizziness and weakness as possible signs of a serious allergic reaction. A severe allergy can progress quickly, so do not wait to see whether it settles on its own.

What to do
- Call 9-1-1 immediately if these symptoms are severe, rapidly developing or make it unsafe to travel.
- If emergency services are not available, go to the nearest hospital emergency department and have someone else drive if possible.
- Tell responders that the symptoms began after an influenza vaccination and provide the time of the injection.
CDC’s vaccine-safety guidance says severe allergic reactions most often happen within minutes to a few hours after vaccination. The timing is a warning aid, not a guarantee that a later reaction is harmless. Any combination of breathing trouble, throat or facial swelling, hives, fast heartbeat, dizziness or weakness should be assessed urgently.
When should I call a healthcare provider without calling 9-1-1?
Contact a healthcare provider when a reaction is persistent, worsening, unusually intense or otherwise concerning. Call sooner if you have a medical condition, are pregnant, are caring for an infant or older adult, or cannot tell whether symptoms are related to vaccination. General side-effect lists cannot diagnose the cause of an individual’s illness.
Seek clinical advice if you develop symptoms that do not fit the expected pattern, if you are unable to carry out normal activities, or if you are worried despite symptoms appearing mild. Describe the vaccine type if known, the date and time it was given, the symptoms, their severity and whether they are changing. CDC advises people with vaccine concerns to contact a healthcare provider.
A flu shot does not give you influenza
The official CDC inactivated influenza VIS states: “Influenza vaccine does not cause flu.” The injected vaccine uses inactivated virus components or other noninfectious material; the expected reactions listed above are not the same as influenza illness.

People can still become ill after vaccination for other reasons. Protection takes time to develop, and a person may have been exposed to an influenza virus or another respiratory infection before or around the vaccination visit. If illness is significant or concerning, seek clinical assessment rather than assuming it is a vaccine side effect. This article cannot determine whether a particular person has influenza, another infection or a vaccine reaction.
What about fainting after the injection?
Fainting can occur after medical procedures, including vaccination. The CDC VIS advises telling the provider if you experience dizziness, vision changes or ringing in your ears. Report those sensations immediately while you are still at the vaccination site so staff can help you sit or lie down safely and observe you.
Fainting is different from the severe-allergy warning pattern, but loss of consciousness, injury, ongoing confusion or symptoms that do not quickly settle require medical evaluation. Do not drive if you feel faint or unsteady.

How serious is Guillain–Barré syndrome (GBS) after flu vaccination?
GBS is a rare neurological condition and a safety concern considered in influenza-vaccine monitoring. CDC reports that some studies found a possible association between injectable flu vaccine and GBS, estimating fewer than 1 or 2 cases per million people vaccinated. Other studies found no association. This estimate comes from studies that detected a possible association; it is not a prediction that any particular vaccinated person will develop GBS, and it does not establish that vaccination caused every case that occurred afterward.

CDC also states that GBS is more common after flu illness than after flu vaccination. That comparison does not make vaccination risk-free; it explains why the decision is evaluated against the risks of influenza itself.
Symptoms that need medical assessment
Progressive weakness, tingling or other new neurological symptoms are not part of the routine list of mild post-shot effects. Seek prompt medical assessment for such symptoms, especially if weakness is spreading or affects walking, breathing or swallowing. An examination is necessary to determine the cause.

Previous GBS within six weeks of an influenza vaccine
For the 2025–26 U.S. influenza season, CDC treats a history of GBS occurring within six weeks after a previous influenza vaccine as a precaution. Tell a healthcare professional about that history before receiving another dose. A clinician can weigh the timing, your health history and the risks of influenza for you; do not make the decision from a general article alone.

The same 2025–26 seasonal recommendations list moderate or severe acute illness as a precaution for relevant vaccine formulations. If you are substantially ill when vaccination is scheduled, ask the administering clinician whether to proceed or reschedule. This is different from a minor, expected reaction after a dose has already been given.

Bring a complete history
Share previous vaccine reactions, known allergies, immune or neurological conditions and current symptoms. Include the date, product formulation if known and how quickly any prior reaction began. Accurate details help the clinician apply the current season’s recommendations to your circumstances.
Injected vaccine and nasal spray are not interchangeable side-effect lists
This article focuses on an injected flu shot. The nasal-spray influenza vaccine has a different formulation and a different side-effect profile, so do not use the injection list to judge symptoms after a nasal spray. If you are unsure which product you received, check your vaccination record or ask the administering site before interpreting symptoms.
A practical decision checklist
- Mild and familiar: Soreness, redness, swelling, headache, fever, muscle aches, nausea or fatigue that begins soon after vaccination and is not worsening fits CDC’s expected list.
- Monitor and document: Note the start time, severity and direction of change. Do not rely on a promised resolution deadline.
- Call a clinician: Get advice for persistent, worsening, unusually severe or otherwise worrying symptoms, or whenever you cannot distinguish illness from a vaccine reaction.
- Call 9-1-1: Treat hives, facial or throat swelling, difficulty breathing, fast heartbeat, severe dizziness or weakness as possible anaphylaxis.
- Before another dose: Discuss GBS within six weeks of a prior influenza vaccine, moderate or severe acute illness and any serious allergy history with a healthcare professional.
What information should you have ready when seeking help?
Write down the vaccination date and approximate time, the arm or site used, the product name if available, your symptoms and their sequence. Record temperature or other measurements only if you can do so safely; do not delay emergency care to collect data. Tell the clinician about recent illnesses, allergies, prior vaccine reactions and relevant medical conditions.
CDC’s consumer guidance, the January 31, 2025 inactivated influenza VIS, CDC vaccine-safety information and the 2025–26 seasonal recommendations are U.S.-focused sources. Seasonal recommendations can change, so verify the current guidance with CDC or a healthcare professional when planning a future vaccination.
