Evaluate a chiplet-interconnect startup at the level of the finished system, not its demo link. Before design-in, require a precise interface definition, standards mapping, reproducible interoperability and repair evidence, workload measurements taken under matched conditions, package and manufacturing plans, security controls, and a credible support and continuity plan. “UCIe-compatible” is only a starting claim until the supplier identifies the exact revision, modes, exclusions, test results, and integration responsibilities.
Start by defining the deliverable
Chiplet-interconnect companies sell very different things under similar language. A supplier may provide only a die-to-die PHY, a protocol adapter, complete link logic, a chiplet that embeds the interface, package technology, a reference design, verification collateral, or integration services. Your diligence plan and risk allocation depend on which of these you are actually buying.
Classify the product and the boundary of responsibility
- Interface IP: PHY, controller, adapter, firmware, and verification files that your team integrates into its own dies.
- Interconnect chiplet: a packaged or bare die that implements the link and possibly protocol conversion.
- Package technology: interposer, bridge, substrate, hybrid-bonding, bump, or assembly know-how supplied alongside the interface.
- Reference platform: evaluation silicon, boards, test software, and a documented integration flow.
- Engineering service: custom implementation, package co-design, validation, or production transfer.
Obtain a written interface-control document. It should state supported protocols, link widths, signaling rates, clocking assumptions, electrical limits, bump maps, package types, process nodes, firmware and software dependencies, reset behavior, error reporting, and every block that remains your responsibility. Ask which features are hard IP, configurable RTL, licensed third-party material, or roadmap items. Require versioned release notes and a change-notification policy.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Turn “compatible” into testable claims
Ask the startup to replace broad marketing language with a compliance matrix. For each requested feature, record the specification revision, supported mode, proof artifact, owner, and known limitation. A claim that a design “supports UCIe” is incomplete without lane count, package assumption, protocol mode, management features, security state, and the exact test conditions.

Map the proposal to standards and alternatives
UCIe is an open package-level die-to-die specification covering physical-layer, protocol, and software-stack elements and using PCIe and CXL standards. The consortium describes its scope this way: “The UCIe specification details the complete standardized Die-to-Die interconnect with physical layer, protocol stack, software model, and compliance testing that will enable end users to easily mix and match chiplet components from a multi-vendor ecosystem for System-on-Chip (SoC) construction, including customized SoC.” That sentence defines the intended standard, not the demonstrated capability of an unnamed startup.
Check the exact UCIe revision
| Revision | Consortium-published information | What you must verify in the startup design |
|---|---|---|
| UCIe 1.1 | Released August 8, 2023; the consortium says it is backward compatible with 1.0. | Supported 1.1 features, 1.0 interoperability modes, compliance scope, and exclusions. |
| UCIe 2.0 | Released August 6, 2024; described as backward compatible with 1.0 and 1.1, with manageability, test/debug support, telemetry, and 3D-packaging support. | Which manageability, test, debug, telemetry, and 3D functions are implemented in silicon, firmware, and tools. |
| UCIe 3.0 | Announcement dated August 5, 2025; the current specifications page lists 48 GT/s and 64 GT/s support and backward compatibility with earlier UCIe specifications. | Whether the quoted rate is implemented for your lane width, package, process, and protocol mode, and what payload performance results from it. |
Use the consortium’s UCIe specifications page and release index to confirm the revision current at procurement. Backward compatibility in a specification does not guarantee plug-and-play operation between two particular dies: implementation options, package rules, firmware, error policies, and compliance results still matter.
Compare only realistic alternatives
UCIe is not the only candidate. OCP describes OpenHBI as a high-performance die-to-die/chiplet interface for a common package, with provisions for interoperability, manufacturability, and testability. Its stated application areas include datacenter, high-performance computing, AI, and networking. Include it or another approach only when it fits your actual package, protocol endpoints, workload, foundry, and ecosystem. A paper comparison of nominal signaling rates is not an architecture decision.
Demand interoperability and conformance evidence
Build an evidence ladder that distinguishes simulation from working, cross-vendor hardware. Request the compliance plan, complete test reports, test equipment configuration, software versions, specification revisions, silicon and package identifiers, and reproducible scripts or logs.

- Simulation: Review coverage of protocol states, electrical corners, reset and error injection, and assertions. Simulation demonstrates intended behavior, not physical margin.
- FPGA or emulation: Check which PHY behaviors are modeled and which are absent. Do not treat an emulated link as package-qualified silicon.
- Engineering samples: Require die revision, process, package construction, lane count, temperature, voltage, and known errata. Ask for failures, not only passes.
- Packaged silicon: Verify both ends of the link, reticle and package configuration, assembly lot, test coverage, and repeatability across units.
- Cross-vendor interoperability: Prefer independent or multi-party demonstrations using a die your team does not control. Obtain permission to contact the named partners.
- Production evidence: Request yield, screening, return-analysis, and field-telemetry procedures when the supplier claims production readiness.
OCP’s Chiplet Systems workstream includes an interoperability checklist of tests and guidelines, while UCIe includes compliance testing in its specification scope. Those published frameworks tell you what to ask for; neither certifies this startup’s implementation. Require raw artifacts, a reproducible environment, and a written list of unsupported combinations.
Evaluate test, repair, and lifecycle operation
A link that works in a laboratory but cannot be diagnosed or repaired can become a yield and field-support liability. Ask how the design detects, isolates, reports, and recovers from lane, clock, protocol, and package faults. Establish what is visible at wafer sort, package test, board test, boot, and runtime.
Questions for manufacturing test
- Which structures support wafer sort and which require a completed package?
- Can the tester exercise every lane, redundancy path, clock mode, and speed grade?
- What are the repair muxes, lane numbering rules, repair signatures, and fuse or firmware steps?
- How are marginal links binned, quarantined, or downgraded rather than silently shipped?
- What diagnostic data is retained for lot, package, die, and lane correlation?
IEEE P3405 is an active project whose description covers interconnect clustering, clocking and redundancy, repair muxing, lane numbering, repair signatures, and high-volume manufacturing-test support. Its project page records PAR approval on September 21, 2023; status can change, so check the current IEEE P3405 page. Treat the project as a requirements source, not evidence that a startup implements every mechanism.

UCIe 2.0 materials describe manageability, test, telemetry, and debug across a system-in-package lifecycle. Verify which controls exist in your proposed product: error counters, lane disable or retrain, firmware update behavior, secure debug authorization, event logs, and service-tool access. Define recovery targets for a correctable error, an uncorrectable error, a failed lane, and a chiplet replacement. Ask how telemetry is protected from exposing proprietary data.

Measure performance, power, and workload fit
Use a common benchmark protocol for the startup and every alternative. Record effective payload bandwidth, latency distribution, bandwidth density, energy per bit, link utilization, protocol overhead, area, and thermal impact. Measure at the same package assumptions, traffic patterns, endpoint protocols, temperature, voltage, error target, and software stack.
| Metric | Required measurement detail | Why it changes the decision |
|---|---|---|
| Payload bandwidth | User bytes per second after encoding, framing, credits, retries, and protocol headers; report sustained and burst results. | Separates useful throughput from a headline signaling rate. |
| Latency | Median, tail percentiles, hop count, message size, queue depth, and cold-start versus warmed conditions. | Shows whether the link suits synchronization, memory access, or streaming traffic. |
| Energy | Energy per transferred bit or byte at stated utilization, voltage, temperature, and error rate; include PHY, controller, retimers, and package effects where applicable. | Reveals system-level power cost rather than PHY-only efficiency. |
| Density and area | Bandwidth per millimeter of edge or package area, bump count, routing layers, controller area, and reserved keep-outs. | Determines whether the interface fits the die and package budget. |
| Thermal behavior | Hotspot location, throttling threshold, package resistance assumptions, and traffic mix. | High utilization can make a nominally efficient link unacceptable in a constrained package. |
The 48 GT/s and 64 GT/s figures listed for UCIe 3.0 are consortium specification data rates, not independent benchmark results. Do not convert GT/s directly into application throughput without accounting for encoding, protocol overhead, lane width, flow control, retries, and utilization. OCP’s Chiplet Systems workstream explicitly treats performance across chiplet boundaries and power and thermal efficiency as system-level concerns; use its workstream material as a checklist.
Audit package and manufacturing readiness
Obtain a package-level design, not just a die-level block diagram. Identify whether the solution uses an organic substrate, silicon interposer, bridge, advanced substrate, or 3D or hybrid-bonded stack. Capture bump pitch, keep-outs, routing layers, signal-integrity limits, warpage, assembly temperature, thermal paths, and mechanical stress assumptions.

- Yield model: Ask how die yield, assembly yield, known-good-die screening, and repair options combine into finished-package yield.
- Test access: Confirm probe, package, and system test points; identify tests that become impossible after stacking.
- Supply chain: Name qualified foundries, package houses, substrate suppliers, and backup sources. State geography and export constraints.
- Change control: Define what happens when a process design kit, package rule, bump map, or assembly partner changes.
- Ownership: Assign responsibility for package co-design, signal integrity, thermal sign-off, qualification, and failure analysis.
UCIe materials discuss standard and advanced packaging, including 3D support in UCIe 2.0. That does not establish a startup’s assembly yield, cost, or schedule. OCP’s system-level work also highlights package thermal and efficiency issues. Require measured or supplier-backed package data before locking the die interface.

Map security and trust boundaries
Draw a trust diagram for every die, controller, firmware image, test port, and debug tool. Decide which party can authenticate a chiplet, update its firmware, read telemetry, change lifecycle state, or enable manufacturing access.
- How is a third-party die identified and authenticated at boot?
- Where are keys generated, stored, rotated, revoked, and destroyed?
- Which debug and test functions are available in production, service, and return-analysis states?
- Can a compromised chiplet impersonate another die or alter error and telemetry records?
- What evidence proves secure state transitions across reset, field update, and decommissioning?
The UCIe specifications page lists a CTA/CSSC/TRoCS security change notice covering lifecycle state, control of test/debug access, and cryptographic state reporting. Confirm the exact revision, implementation maturity, and fit with your threat model; a standards feature is not proof that the startup has implemented or validated it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Diligence the ecosystem and the company
Technical fit can still fail if the supplier cannot support a multi-year silicon program. Request named interoperability partners and permission to contact them. Separate paid evaluations, announced design wins, tape-outs, packaged samples, and volume shipments; they represent different levels of evidence.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Roadmap ownership: Who controls the PHY, protocol, firmware, verification environment, and package collateral? What is committed contractually versus aspirational?
- Support: Specify response times, escalation engineers, bug-fix obligations, release cadence, documentation access, and end-of-life notice.
- IP rights: Review provenance, patent and third-party license obligations, field-of-use limits, sublicensing, escrow, indemnity, and rights after termination or acquisition.
- Operational continuity: Require a source-code or build escrow where appropriate, a transfer plan, and protections if the startup is acquired or stops operating.
- Manufacturing network: Verify supported foundries, OSATs, test houses, package flows, and geographic or export restrictions for your target markets.
The UCIe consortium’s member information and OCP’s multi-vendor work indicate broad industry interest, but ecosystem activity does not prove this startup’s customer traction, financial durability, or long-term support.

Build a weighted comparison scorecard
Score only approaches that satisfy your non-negotiable package and protocol constraints. A useful scorecard has separate evidence columns so a high marketing score cannot hide an unverified claim.
| Decision axis | Evidence to record | Typical gate question |
|---|---|---|
| Standard and protocol | Revision, modes, exclusions, software model, compliance plan | Does the implementation support the exact endpoint protocols and revision required? |
| Interoperability | Cross-vendor tests, artifacts, partner contacts, failure log | Has packaged silicon exchanged traffic with a die outside the supplier’s control? |
| Performance and energy | Matched workload, payload throughput, latency tails, energy, thermal data | Does it meet system targets at realistic utilization and temperature? |
| Package and process | Package stack, bump map, PDK, yield model, qualified partners | Can your assembly flow build and test it at the required volume? |
| Test, repair, debug | Wafer/package coverage, redundancy, telemetry, secure access | Can failures be found, repaired, contained, and explained? |
| Security | Identity, keys, lifecycle states, debug policy, update path | Are trust boundaries enforceable in production and service? |
| Commercial durability | License, support, escrow, roadmap, supply and continuity plan | Can you operate the product if the startup changes ownership or exits? |
Weight the axes according to the product. A high-performance accelerator may prioritize bandwidth density and thermal margin; a safety-critical controller may give greater weight to diagnostics, repair, secure lifecycle states, and supplier continuity. Keep consortium claims, startup claims, and independent measurements in separate evidence columns.
Use stage gates before design-in
- Architecture gate: Freeze traffic patterns, endpoint protocols, package class, lane count, performance, power, security, and service-life requirements.
- Supplier gate: Obtain the interface-control document, compliance matrix, IP terms, roadmap, support commitments, and named manufacturing partners.
- Prototype gate: Run matched workloads and fault injection on the intended package or the closest justified surrogate. Record raw logs and all deviations.
- Interoperability gate: Repeat tests with an independent die or partner, at temperature and voltage corners, including reset, retrain, lane failure, and firmware-update cases.
- Qualification gate: Review package reliability, thermal cycling, assembly yield, wafer and package test coverage, repair effectiveness, security review, and failure-analysis turnaround.
- Production gate: Approve only with lot acceptance criteria, telemetry ownership, change-control triggers, end-of-life terms, escrow or transfer provisions, and a second-source or contingency plan where feasible.
Red flags and corrective actions
- Red flag: “UCIe-compatible” with no revision or exclusions. Corrective action: demand a feature-by-feature matrix tied to a specification revision and test artifact.
- Red flag: peak GT/s presented as application throughput. Corrective action: rerun a payload benchmark with protocol overhead, utilization, latency tails, and energy included.
- Red flag: only simulation or an internal loopback demo. Corrective action: require packaged, cross-vendor interoperability and independent observation.
- Red flag: no lane-repair or field-diagnostic story. Corrective action: make wafer/package test coverage, redundancy, telemetry, and recovery targets entry criteria.
- Red flag: package partner named but responsibilities unclear. Corrective action: obtain a signed responsibility matrix for co-design, thermal sign-off, yield, test, and failure analysis.
- Red flag: roadmap depends on a future standard feature. Corrective action: qualify the currently shipping implementation or contract a dated, testable milestone with an exit option.
- Red flag: weak continuity or IP protections. Corrective action: negotiate escrow, source or build-transfer rights, license survival, support commitments, and acquisition safeguards before design resources are committed.
Decision rule
Adopt the startup’s technology only when its demonstrated implementation satisfies your complete system specification: the required protocol and package are supported today; cross-vendor interoperability is reproducible; performance, energy, thermal, test, repair, and security evidence is measured under comparable conditions; and contracts protect supply, support, IP, and continuity. If any of those gates remains a promise, treat the technology as an experiment or a contingent option rather than a production design-in.
