For nausea or uncomfortable fullness, eat small portions slowly and choose bland, lower-fat foods such as crackers, toast, rice, or soup. For constipation, gradually increase fiber and drink enough water or other sugar-free liquids. During diarrhea, prioritize small sips of fluid and temporarily choose simpler, lower-fiber foods. These strategies may ease symptoms but are not guaranteed treatments. Your exact medicine, formulation, medical conditions, and symptom severity determine what is safe.

Which digestive symptoms can GLP-1 medicines cause?

Gastrointestinal effects are common with GLP-1 medicines, but labels are product-specific and do not mean every medicine causes every symptom. The current WEGOVY Medication Guide lists nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, bloating, belching, and heartburn among reported effects. Other GLP-1 products can have different labeling, frequencies, or warnings.

Food and drink choices should match the symptom. A strategy that helps constipation, such as adding more fiber, can aggravate diarrhea. Likewise, forcing a large drink or meal when you feel full can worsen nausea. Use the guidance below as general education, not as a replacement for your prescriber or dietitian.

Choose food by symptom

Symptom Usually more tolerable options What to change temporarily
Nausea, reflux, or uncomfortable fullness Small, slow meals; crackers, toast, rice; soup or other water-containing foods Stop at comfortable fullness; avoid greasy foods if they trigger symptoms; do not lie down soon after eating
Vomiting Small, frequent sips of fluid; resume simple foods as tolerated Do not force a large meal or large volume of fluid at once
Diarrhea Water or sugar-free liquids; broth, rice, carrots, very ripe fruit without skin Temporarily reduce high-fiber foods; seek advice if it persists or you cannot keep fluids down
Constipation Adequate fiber, increased gradually; water or other sugar-free liquids; balanced meals and physical activity Do not abruptly add a large amount of fiber or start a laxative without individualized advice

What to eat for nausea, reflux, or uncomfortable fullness

Make portions smaller and slower

Serve less food than usual, take small bites, and eat slowly. Pause during the meal and stop when you feel comfortably satisfied rather than trying to finish a normal portion. Several smaller meals may be easier than a few large ones. These changes reduce the chance that a meal will feel overwhelming when your appetite or stomach tolerance is reduced.

Try bland, lower-fat foods

Crackers, toast, and rice are practical examples named in WEGOVY patient guidance. Lower-fat preparation may be easier to tolerate than fried or greasy food. Soup, gelatin, and other foods that contain water are options some people find easier during nausea. The 2023 multidisciplinary consensus also lists crackers, apples, mint, ginger root, and ginger-based drinks as possible nausea-easing choices after the interval required for your dose. None of these foods works for everyone, and ginger or mint can aggravate reflux in some people.

Change the timing and posture around meals

  • Eat slowly and take breaks instead of rushing.
  • Avoid lying down soon after eating, particularly if heartburn or regurgitation is present.
  • If a particular rich or greasy food reliably triggers symptoms, leave it out while symptoms settle rather than testing it repeatedly.
  • Keep a simple record of the meal, dose timing, and symptoms so you can identify personal triggers to discuss with your clinician.

What to drink when vomiting or diarrhea causes fluid loss

Vomiting and diarrhea can remove both water and electrolytes. DailyMed’s WEGOVY patient labeling warns that this fluid loss can lead to dehydration and kidney problems and states: “It is important for you to drink fluids to help reduce your chance of dehydration.” If your stomach is unsettled, take small, frequent sips rather than attempting a large glass at once. Water, broth, and other sugar-free liquids can be useful options, depending on your clinician’s advice.

There is no single daily fluid target that is correct for everyone. Kidney disease, heart disease, dialysis, or another fluid restriction changes what you should drink. Follow the amount and type of fluid recommended by your healthcare professional instead of adopting a generic number from the internet.

If you are actively vomiting

  1. Pause solid food briefly if eating immediately triggers more vomiting.
  2. Try tiny sips at frequent intervals rather than a full cup.
  3. When fluids stay down, reintroduce simple foods such as toast, rice, crackers, or broth in small portions.
  4. Contact your healthcare professional if vomiting continues, you cannot keep liquids down, or you develop signs of dehydration.

What to eat during diarrhea

The consensus guidance for diarrhea differs from constipation advice. Temporarily reduce high-fiber foods while stools are loose, then return to your usual balanced intake as symptoms improve. Simpler choices may include chicken broth, rice, cooked carrots, and very ripe fruit without its skin. These are short-term tolerance options, not a permanent restrictive diet.

Foods and drinks that irritate one person may not affect another. Rather than treating an extensive avoidance list as universal, note which items worsen your own diarrhea and discuss persistent symptoms with your prescriber. Small portions and frequent sips are generally easier than large meals or drinks when your gut is unsettled.

What to eat and drink for constipation

Increase fiber gradually

The multidisciplinary consensus recommends adequate dietary fiber for constipation, but advises increasing it gradually once symptoms improve. Add fiber-rich foods in manageable steps instead of suddenly doubling your intake. A balanced pattern containing vegetables, fruit, beans, and whole grains can provide fiber, but the right amount depends on your usual diet, tolerance, and medical conditions.

Pair fiber with fluids

Fiber works best when you also consume enough water or other sugar-free liquids. Increasing fiber without adequate fluid can leave stools harder for some people. Do not use a fixed fluid volume if you have a kidney or heart condition, are on dialysis, or have been given a fluid restriction.

Move if you are able

The consensus includes physical activity as part of constipation management. Gentle, regular movement may be more realistic than strenuous exercise when you are nauseated or fatigued. Ask your clinician what level is appropriate if you have mobility limits or another condition that affects exercise.

Medication timing changes what you can eat and drink

Oral semaglutide tablets

MedlinePlus instructs people taking oral semaglutide tablets to take the dose when they wake with no more than 4 ounces (120 mL) of plain water. Wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything else, or taking another oral medicine. The 4-ounce amount is a medication-administration limit, not a recommended daily hydration target.

Injectable semaglutide

DailyMed distinguishes injectable semaglutide from the tablet formulation: injectable semaglutide can be taken with or without food. Do not transfer the tablet’s 4-ounce and 30-minute instructions to an injection. Always read the current instructions for the exact product and dose prescribed to you.

A practical day when nausea is the main problem

  1. Take your medicine exactly as labeled for its formulation.
  2. Start with a small, bland breakfast such as toast or crackers if those foods are tolerated.
  3. Use small sips of water or another approved sugar-free liquid throughout the day instead of waiting until you feel very thirsty.
  4. Choose a modest lunch or dinner portion, such as rice with a simple protein or soup, and eat slowly.
  5. Stop at comfortable fullness and remain upright after eating.
  6. Record foods or dose-related patterns that repeatedly worsen symptoms and share them with your healthcare professional.

This example is not a prescribed meal plan. Diabetes treatment, allergies, pregnancy, cultural diet, kidney function, and nutritional needs may require different choices.

When digestive symptoms need medical advice

Food adjustments should not delay care for severe, persistent, or worsening symptoms. Contact your healthcare professional promptly if nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea does not go away, if you cannot drink liquids, or if you are showing signs of dehydration. DailyMed and MedlinePlus both emphasize contacting a clinician when symptoms persist or fluids cannot be maintained.

Severe or persistent abdominal pain should be assessed rather than managed only with dietary changes. Call urgently if pain is intense, sudden, or accompanied by repeated vomiting, fainting, confusion, or other concerning symptoms. Your clinician may need to review the dose, other medicines, hydration status, or a cause unrelated to the GLP-1 medicine.

People who need individualized nutrition advice

  • Kidney or heart disease: fluid and electrolyte advice may be restricted or personalized.
  • Diabetes treated with glucose-lowering medicines: eating much less than usual can affect glucose levels and medication safety.
  • Pregnancy or plans for pregnancy: ask the prescribing clinician about whether your medicine and diet plan are appropriate.
  • Difficulty maintaining nutrition: ongoing low intake, rapid unintentional weight loss, or inability to meet protein and calorie needs warrants professional guidance.
  • Severe or recurring symptoms: a prescriber or registered dietitian can create a plan that accounts for your exact formulation and medical history.

MedlinePlus advises following dietary guidance from your doctor or dietitian. A registered dietitian can help you increase or reduce fiber without compromising nutrition, while your prescriber can determine whether symptoms require a dose or treatment review.
