A taproom closing does not automatically make your brewery gift card worthless. First determine whether only that location closed or the brewery’s legal business ended. Then ask the brewery, owner, successor, affiliated locations, and—if necessary—a nearby competitor whether they will honor the balance. If you paid by credit card, contact the card issuer promptly about a possible chargeback. If the brewery filed bankruptcy, follow the court’s claims process, but expect recovery to be uncertain.
Start by finding out what actually closed
“The taproom is closed” can describe several legally different situations: one location may have shut while the brewery continues elsewhere; the company may have sold its assets; the brand may have been rebranded; or the entire business may have ceased operations or entered bankruptcy. Your options depend on which event occurred and which legal entity issued the card.
Check the brewery’s current status
- Review the brewery’s official website and social-media accounts for a closure, sale, relocation, or bankruptcy notice.
- Call the phone number printed on the card, the former taproom’s listing, and any other listed brewery location. Record the date, number, and name of anyone who responds.
- Search your state’s business-entity records to see whether the company is active, dissolved, renamed, or registered under a successor.
- Look for bankruptcy notices in the federal bankruptcy court serving the brewery’s principal location.
A single taproom closure may leave the card usable at another taproom, an online shop, a restaurant operated by the same company, or a successor business. A complete shutdown without a successor is a much harder collection problem.

Save the physical card and photograph both sides. Gather the receipt or order confirmation, purchase date, original amount, current balance, and the name of the merchant shown on your card statement. Screenshot closure announcements and keep emails, delivery confirmations, and call notes. This documentation helps with a voluntary redemption request, a payment dispute, or a bankruptcy claim.

Ask the issuer or successor to redeem the balance
Make a written request
Email the brewery, owner, successor company, or affiliated restaurant rather than relying only on a phone conversation. Include the card number (mask all but the last four digits if emailing), balance, purchase date, receipt, and the locations or websites where you would accept redemption. Ask for a written answer and a deadline for responding.
Subject: Request to redeem unused gift card after taproom closure
I purchased gift card [last four digits] on [date] for $[amount]. The card shows a remaining balance of approximately $[balance]. Please confirm whether it can be used at another location, an online store, an affiliated business, or a successor entity. If it cannot be redeemed, please explain the applicable refund or claims procedure. I have attached my receipt and proof of purchase.Keep the original card until the matter is resolved. Do not mail it to an unknown address or surrender it without a written commitment to pay or redeem the value.
Consider affiliated locations and competitors
Michigan consumer guidance recommends asking whether the merchant still accepts the card and notes that competitors sometimes agree to honor cards from a closed business. A successor, affiliated restaurant, or competitor may accept the card as a goodwill arrangement, but acceptance is generally voluntary unless a specific contract or state law requires it. Ask exactly where the balance can be used, whether a new card will be issued, and whether restrictions apply to merchandise, food, alcohol, events, or gratuities.

Ask your credit-card issuer about a chargeback quickly
North Carolina Department of Justice guidance says a consumer who paid by credit card may be able to request a chargeback when a business closes. A chargeback is a card-network and issuer process, not an automatic statutory refund. The issuer decides whether the transaction qualifies and applies its own time limits and evidence requirements.
- Call the number on the back of the credit card as soon as you learn the business cannot provide the goods or service.
- Explain that the merchant closed and the purchased gift-card value cannot be delivered. Ask which dispute category applies and the filing deadline.
- Submit the receipt, card statement, closure notice, your written request to the merchant, and any response or nonresponse.
- Keep the dispute number and meet every follow-up deadline. Respond promptly if the issuer asks for more documentation.
Do not assume a debit-card purchase receives the same treatment as a credit-card purchase; ask your bank which rules and deadlines govern that payment method. A chargeback request also does not guarantee success, especially if the merchant disputes the claim or the request is late.
Understand expiration dates and the federal five-year baseline
For most covered gift cards, federal Regulation E, 12 CFR §1005.20, generally requires the underlying funds to remain available for at least five years from the date of issuance or the last load. The rule also limits dormancy or inactivity fees and addresses replacement or payment options when a card expires while funds remain. The card’s printed expiration date and required disclosures still matter.

This federal baseline is not universal. Cards issued solely as awards, loyalty rewards, or promotions can fall outside the federal gift-card provisions, so read the wording on the card and determine how you received it. A card sold for money is treated differently from a promotional certificate given as a prize or loyalty benefit.

Older cards, unusual promotional terms, and cards issued by a different entity may require separate analysis.
Why an expiration date does not ensure payment
An expiration date controls how long the issuer must make value available under applicable rules; it does not create money that remains available after the issuer’s assets disappear. Oregon Department of Justice guidance warns that if a merchant declares bankruptcy or closes a local store before a card is used, the card may be useless regardless of its expiration date. In other words, legal validity and practical collectability can diverge.

Check state protections, including cash-out rules
State law can provide stronger protection than the federal baseline, but the result depends on the state whose law governs the transaction, the purchase date, the card type, and the issuer’s location. Do not treat one state’s cash-out rule as nationwide.
Oregon example
Oregon says state law bars inactivity, maintenance, and service fees from reducing a qualifying gift-card balance. A qualifying Oregon balance of $5 or less may be redeemable for cash. Whether that rule applies depends on the card and transaction, so verify the current state requirements before demanding cash.

Other state-law questions to investigate
- Does the state require cash redemption below a specified balance?
- Are inactivity, maintenance, or service fees prohibited?
- Does the law cover restaurant or brewery certificates, promotional cards, or only paid gift cards?
- Is the issuer required to provide a replacement card or disclose an expiration date?
- Which state’s law applies if you bought the card online or while traveling?
Use the attorney general or consumer-protection office in the relevant state for the current rule. Keep a copy of the statute or agency guidance you rely on when you write to the issuer.

If the brewery filed bankruptcy
Find the case and deadline
Search the federal bankruptcy court docket for the brewery’s legal name, review closure notices, and check any trustee or claims-agent website for the case number. Bankruptcy notices identify the type of case, the claims deadline (often called the bar date), and the required proof-of-claim form or electronic filing system.
File a proof of claim when instructed
- Confirm that the case name and number match the entity named on your card or receipt.
- Calculate the unused balance and attach a copy of the card, receipt, and correspondence. Keep the original documents.
- Describe the claim as the unpaid value of a gift card and identify whether you received any partial redemption.
- File before the stated deadline using the court’s required method, then save the confirmation.
Gift-card holders may receive little or nothing because the company’s secured lenders, employees, taxes, landlords, suppliers, and other unsecured creditors also seek payment. Connecticut consumer guidance states that there is no state or federal guaranty fund for an issuer that goes out of business. A filed claim preserves your opportunity to share in any distribution; it does not create a guaranteed refund.
Why a consumer agency may not be able to recover your money
A state agency can record complaints and explain the law, but it generally cannot bypass bankruptcy priorities. A New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs statement quoted by CBS Philadelphia said: “Once a store enters bankruptcy, the Division is unable to get consumers refunds for unused gift cards.” That limitation is why filing a timely claim matters even when you also report the closure.

File a complaint with the state attorney general or consumer-protection office if the issuer ignores your written request, refuses to honor a state-law cash-out right, appears to have sold cards while shutting down, or gives contradictory explanations. Attach a concise timeline, receipt, card images, closure evidence, and copies of your communications.
Ask the agency to clarify the applicable rule and record the complaint number. An agency inquiry may prompt a response or reveal a successor, but it is an escalation and documentation route—not a guaranteed refund. If the amount is substantial, a local attorney can assess contract, consumer-fraud, or bankruptcy options under your state’s law.
