First, verify the exact model’s support status on its manufacturer’s support page. If security updates have ended, do not use the tablet for banking, primary email, password storage, work accounts, or unrestricted web browsing. You can still give a working tablet a low-risk, preferably offline role, or prepare it for a suitable recipient. Before donation or sale, back up your files, remove cards, unlink accounts and trusted-device access, and perform the manufacturer’s factory reset. Recycle it through a recognized local electronics program if it is unsafe, unusable, or impossible to erase reliably.
What “no longer gets updates” means
A tablet can stop receiving several different kinds of support. An operating-system update may add features, while a security update fixes newly discovered vulnerabilities. App developers may also stop supporting an older operating-system version even when the manufacturer still supplies occasional patches. Check the tablet’s exact model number, current operating-system version, and last security-patch date rather than judging only by its age.
Support is not uniform across manufacturers, carriers, price ranges, or regions. The Federal Trade Commission reported in 2018 that support periods and update frequency varied widely, including among devices made by the same company or sold at similar prices. That report, based mainly on information requested from eight manufacturers in May 2016, is useful context about variation—not a current lookup for your particular tablet. The manufacturer’s current support page, product documentation, or support contact is the authoritative place to check.
How to check the model and patch status
- Open Settings and look for About tablet, About device, or a similarly named page. Record the model name, model number, operating-system version, and security-update date.
- Search the manufacturer’s support site for that exact model number. Look for an update history, security bulletin, end-of-support statement, or a final supported operating-system version.
- Check whether the tablet can still install the latest update offered for it. “No update available” is not the same as “fully supported”; it may mean the device has reached its final release.
- If the information is unclear, ask the manufacturer to confirm whether security fixes are still issued for your model and region.
Is it safe to keep using an unsupported tablet?
There is no risk-free way to keep using a product after security support ends. The UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) says, in its organizational guidance on obsolete products, “The only fully effective way to mitigate this risk is to stop using the obsolete product.” The guidance was published on 29 June 2021, reviewed on 13 May 2025, and is version 2.1. It is written for organizations, so the practical risk to a consumer depends on the tablet, the network, the apps, and the data involved; its central warning still applies.

An unsupported tablet is not automatically compromised the day support ends. The problem is that newly discovered weaknesses will no longer be corrected, so exposure can grow over time. A factory reset does not change that: it removes user data and accounts but does not patch the operating system or eliminate vulnerabilities in unsupported software.
Tasks to stop doing on the tablet
- Online banking, investment accounts, government services, or shopping that stores payment details.
- Primary email, password-manager vaults, recovery accounts, or accounts that can reset other passwords.
- Work, school, health, or business systems containing confidential information.
- Installing unfamiliar apps, opening unexpected attachments, or browsing unknown websites.
- Using it as the trusted device for two-factor authentication unless you have a current, supported alternative.
Also remove saved passwords and payment information before changing the device’s role. If the tablet must connect to Wi-Fi, use it only for a narrowly defined purpose and keep the operating system and installed apps at their final available versions.
Safe limited uses for an old tablet
A functioning tablet can remain useful when the task is low-stakes and the content is stored locally. These are practical reuse ideas, not a security endorsement.

Load books, manuals, or documents while the tablet is still supported, then use it in airplane mode or with Wi-Fi disabled. Avoid signing into a reading service on the obsolete device if the files can be transferred another way.

Local music and video
Store music, podcasts, or videos on the tablet for travel, exercise, or a child’s supervised viewing. Turn off network access when playback does not need it. Check battery condition first; an aging battery that becomes hot, swells, or loses capacity rapidly is a reason to retire the device.
Photo display or recipe screen
Use locally stored photos, downloaded recipes, timers, or other non-sensitive reference material. Keep personal cloud accounts signed out and do not use the tablet to display documents that include confidential information.
Offline learning and simple control panels
Downloaded lessons, language exercises, maps, or a local dashboard can work if the required apps still run. Test the complete workflow before relying on it. An app that requires a current server, certificate, or sign-in may stop working without warning.

- Enable airplane mode and turn on only the connection you genuinely need.
- Delete browsers and apps that are no longer necessary; fewer components mean fewer places to encounter untrusted content.
- Do not leave accounts signed in, especially accounts used on your current phone or computer.
- Keep the tablet physically away from children or visitors if it contains any residual personal data.
When to pass it on, sell it, or donate it
Pass the tablet to someone else only when it is functional, can be erased, and suits the recipient’s needs. Disclose the model, operating-system version, and that manufacturer security support has ended. Do not describe a factory reset as making the tablet secure for unrestricted online use.

Check suitability before donation
- Confirm that the screen, charging port, buttons, storage, Wi-Fi, and battery work reliably.
- Make sure the recipient’s required apps support the tablet’s operating-system version.
- Consider accessibility needs, storage capacity, performance, and whether replacement parts or chargers are available.
- For a school or child, ask how the organization will manage accounts, filtering, supervision, and updates.
UK Department for Education guidance dated 19 April 2020 says donated devices in England need appropriate preparation and points to NCSC advice on donated equipment and unsupported devices. The UK IT Reuse for Good Charter, updated 2 October 2026, describes an organization-focused reuse-first approach that includes secure wiping, refurbishment, and fit-for-purpose donation. It is UK-specific and is not a universal consumer drop-off scheme.
How to wipe an old tablet before donating or selling it
Do these steps in order. Menu names differ by operating-system version, so use the tablet maker’s instructions for the exact model.
- Back up wanted data. Copy photos, documents, downloads, contacts, and notes to a current computer or supported cloud account. Open several copied files to verify that the backup is usable.
- Move authentication first. Transfer authenticator apps, passkeys, recovery codes, and trusted-device approvals to your current device. Check that you can sign in without the old tablet.
- Remove accounts. Sign out of email, cloud storage, app stores, messaging, and payment services. Remove the tablet from account security pages and trusted-device lists. For example, unlink its Apple or Google account using the account controls provided by the relevant service.
- Remove removable storage. Take out the SIM card and microSD or other memory card. Decide separately whether to keep, erase, or recycle the card; a factory reset may not erase a removable card.
- Encrypt if the option exists. If the tablet supports device encryption, confirm it is enabled before resetting. Do not treat encryption as a substitute for the reset or as proof that unsupported software is safe.
- Run the manufacturer’s factory reset. Use the exact Settings path or hardware procedure for the model. The reset should remove user accounts, apps, settings, and locally stored files.
- Verify the result. Restart the tablet. It should show the initial welcome or setup screen, not your account, photos, messages, or home screen.
- Provide only what the recipient needs. Include a compatible charger and basic model information, but do not provide your SIM card, memory card, passwords, or recovery codes.
The FTC’s January 2025 consumer guidance for transferring phones recommends the same core precautions—backup, account removal, removable-card handling, and reset—while noting that users should follow the exact maker’s instructions. Those steps are directly useful for tablets, but the wording and location of each control can differ.

When recycling is the better choice
Recycle the tablet if it is broken, too slow for a meaningful task, unsuitable for the intended recipient, or cannot be reset and verified. A device with a swollen, leaking, or severely damaged battery should not be mailed or placed in an ordinary collection bin; keep it away from heat and follow local instructions for damaged batteries.

Find a recognized route
- Check the manufacturer’s take-back program.
- Search your municipality’s electronics or household hazardous-waste service.
- Ask a reputable electronics retailer whether it accepts tablets for recycling.
- Use a certified or otherwise established electronics-recycling organization where one is available.
Collection rules vary by country, state, and municipality. The US Environmental Protection Agency says responsible electronics donation and recycling can conserve natural resources and should be handled safely and correctly. Confirm local instructions instead of assuming that a particular store or collection day accepts every tablet or battery type. Never put electronics in ordinary household trash where local rules prohibit it.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming age alone proves support has ended
Two tablets of the same age can have different support periods. Use the exact model and manufacturer information.
Believing a reset fixes security
A reset prepares the device for transfer; it does not install missing patches. Keep unsupported tablets away from sensitive online services.

Removing an account from the tablet may not remove it from the account’s security dashboard. Review trusted devices, active sessions, passkeys, and authenticator registrations separately.

Leaving a memory card inside
Reset procedures may leave removable storage untouched. Remove the card before transfer and handle its data separately.
Donating without checking the recipient’s needs
A slow tablet with an obsolete operating system may frustrate a student or fail required safeguarding controls. Confirm the real use case first.
Installing unofficial firmware as a casual fix
Custom operating systems vary in model compatibility, maintenance quality, and protection. Modification can remove vendor safeguards and create new failure modes. It is not a simple substitute for supported software, and it should not be recommended without a well-supported, model-specific plan.
