Choose the next step by condition, usefulness, support status and data risk. A reliable computer can be kept for a secondary job, donated, sold or offered through an eligible trade-in program. A broken, unsafe or genuinely obsolete machine should go through a responsible electronics-recycling route. In every case, back up the files you want and remove personal data before the computer leaves your control.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, but a Windows 10 PC did not suddenly stop working or automatically become waste. It can still run; it simply no longer receives Microsoft security updates, software updates or technical support. That change belongs in your decision, not as an automatic disposal order.
Start with a condition-and-usefulness check
Do not begin with the question “Can I get rid of this?” Begin with “Is this computer safe, reliable and useful to someone?” A working PC has more options than a dead one, and a machine that is unsafe or unreliable should not be passed to another person as a usable computer.

Five questions make the choice clearer: Does it work consistently? Can it run a supported operating system and the applications the next user needs? Is the likely value worth the effort of selling or transporting it? Will a recipient or program accept its age, model and condition in your area? How much assurance do you need that old data cannot be recovered?

If the PC still works, consider reuse before recycling
Keep it for a focused secondary job
An older computer can remain useful when the task does not demand modern hardware. Examples include an offline writing machine, a household media player, a basic file store on a trusted home network, or a computer reserved for legacy software that you still own and are allowed to use. Keep the role narrow and document what the machine can safely do.
Support status matters even when the hardware seems fine. Check whether the installed operating system still receives security fixes and whether essential applications continue to support it. A computer that works but cannot be kept reasonably secure may be better suited to an offline task, parts recovery or recycling than to everyday web browsing, online banking or handling sensitive accounts.
Donate to a recipient that can actually use it
Contact a school, community group, repair organization or individual before delivering the computer. Ask what age and performance they can accept, which operating system or applications they need, whether they can use the model’s ports and accessories, and whether licensing or setup responsibilities are clear. A donation is useful only when the recipient can put the machine into service.
Older federal reuse guidance lists operational condition, safety and future utility among donation considerations. That material comes from a 2012 federal context, so its “less than five years old” factor should not be treated as a current consumer rule. A ten-year-old machine may be valuable to one recipient and unsuitable for another; the recipient’s requirements are the deciding factor.

Sell privately when the effort is justified
Private resale can produce more money than a trade-in, but it requires accurate listing, communication, payment handling and safe data removal. Describe the processor, memory, storage, display size, operating-system edition, battery condition for a laptop, included power supply and known faults. State clearly whether the machine is ready to use, sold for repair, or offered for parts.
Do not represent an unsupported operating system as secure simply because the computer starts. Explain the support status and any limitations so the buyer can make an informed decision. If the machine is unreliable, has physical damage or contains a failing drive, selling it as a normal working PC can create a safety and data-risk problem rather than a useful reuse outcome.
Check trade-in programs, but assume nothing
Manufacturer and retailer trade-in programs are conditional. Eligibility can depend on country or region, brand, model, age, working condition and included components. The quoted value may change after inspection, and some locations offer recycling without offering payment.

Understand what Windows 10’s end of support changes
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says affected PCs continue to function, but Microsoft no longer supplies the normal software updates, security updates and fixes, or technical support for the operating system.
That status does not by itself determine whether you should keep, donate, sell or recycle the machine. First check whether the hardware meets Windows 11 requirements. If it does, a supported upgrade may extend useful service life. If it does not, continuing to use the computer requires a deliberate security decision: reduce exposure, avoid sensitive tasks, use an operating system that the hardware can support, or retire the device.
Microsoft also points to Consumer Extended Security Updates for eligible devices. Eligibility, enrollment windows and terms can change, so verify the current requirements before relying on that option. Do not promise that every Windows 10 computer qualifies.
Remove your personal data before transfer
Back up anything you want before resetting the PC. Open the backup on another device and verify that important documents, photos, browser data and other irreplaceable files are really there. A reset is destructive; a backup that was never checked is not a safe backup.

Use Windows Reset for an ordinary consumer handoff
- In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Recovery. In Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Recovery.
- Choose Reset this PC and select Reset PC or Get started, depending on the Windows version.
- Select Remove everything. This removes personal files, applications and settings rather than preserving them for the next user.
- When the reset options offer it, turn on Clean data. Microsoft says this makes removed files harder for another person to recover.
- Read the final confirmation, connect power, and let the process finish without interrupting it. Stop at the first-run setup screen so the recipient can configure the computer with their own account.
Microsoft’s warning must remain attached to this procedure: “The data erasure functionality is targeted at consumers and does not meet government and industry data erasure standards.” Consumer Reset is therefore not a certified or high-assurance sanitization method.
Use stronger sanitization when the data is sensitive
If the computer held business records, regulated information, client data, credentials or other high-risk material, follow the organization’s documented sanitization policy or use an appropriately qualified service. Ask how the storage device will be sanitized or destroyed and what evidence of completion you will receive. Do not claim that the Windows consumer reset meets a government, industry or organizational erasure standard.
Complete a handoff checklist
- Back up and verify wanted files on a different device.
- Sign out of accounts where appropriate and remove saved credentials or synchronization links.
- Remove USB drives, memory cards and discs.
- Record the device’s serial number if it is being sold, donated or sent through a program.
- Include the power supply, dock, keyboard or other accessories only when the recipient or program requests them.
- After the reset, do not sign back in to test the machine with your personal account.
Choose a responsible recycling route for a broken or obsolete PC
Start with the manufacturer or a retailer
Some manufacturers and retailers offer take-back or recycling services, but accepted products and locations vary. Check the current regional page for the device type, drop-off or shipping instructions, fees, preparation requirements and whether the service is available where you live. A program that accepts one brand or product category may not accept another.
Check municipal and regional electronics programs
Your city, county, state or national waste authority may list electronics drop-off sites, collection events or approved recyclers. Follow the instructions for computers and displays specifically. Rules differ by jurisdiction, and ordinary household trash is not a safe assumption for unwanted electronics.

Do not pass unsafe equipment to a reuse recipient
A computer with damaged power components, severe overheating, exposed wiring, liquid damage or an unreliable storage device should not be presented as a ready-to-use donation. Tell the receiving organization about known faults if it accepts equipment for repair or parts; otherwise use a recycling route that is equipped for end-of-life electronics.
How to decide between keeping, selling, donating and recycling
Keep it when the task is clear and the security boundary is acceptable
Keeping the PC makes sense when it performs a defined job, the cost of operating it is reasonable, and you can maintain an acceptable security posture. Limit internet exposure if the operating system is no longer supported, and do not use an unsupported machine for high-risk accounts simply because it is convenient.
Donate when a confirmed recipient has a use
Donation is strongest when the recipient has agreed to the model, condition, accessories and setup expectations. Ask whether they prefer a wiped computer, a parts machine or a contribution toward another device. This avoids transferring equipment that consumes the recipient’s time and disposal budget.

Sell or trade in when value exceeds the work and risk
Compare a confirmed trade-in valuation with a realistic private-sale price after accounting for listing effort, packing, transport, inspection disputes and the data-sanitization level required. A low-value machine may be more responsibly recycled than sold if the transaction creates disproportionate privacy or support problems.
Recycle when usefulness has ended
Recycling is the appropriate endpoint for equipment that is broken, unsafe, unsupported for the intended use and unwanted by reuse organizations. Use a current, location-specific program and follow its preparation instructions rather than leaving the computer beside ordinary waste.

- Back up and verify all wanted data.
- Use Windows Reset with Remove everything and, for ordinary consumer transfers, Clean data.
- Use an organizational or qualified high-assurance sanitization process when the data requires it.
- Remove accounts and media, include only requested accessories, and follow the recipient’s or recycler’s handoff instructions.
