An older BOOX can still be useful for jobs that mostly show text and change infrequently: a simple planner, a recipe screen, or a secondary display for reading documents. The best choice depends on the model’s Android version, handwriting support, screen refresh behavior, and whether you can keep it safely powered and positioned.
Why an older BOOX can still be useful
BOOX devices pair E Ink screens with Android app support. E Ink reflects ambient light rather than emitting light like a conventional backlit display, which gives the screen a different viewing character; it is not a guarantee against eye strain. BOOX says compatible third-party apps can be installed, but compatibility varies. Check your device’s model and Android version before planning around a particular app.
That combination suits relatively static, text-heavy tasks better than activities that need frequent animation, rapid interaction, color accuracy, or precise drawing.

Use Calendar Memo as a lightweight planner
If your BOOX includes Calendar Memo, it is the simplest documented repurposing option because it uses a built-in feature rather than requiring a separate display setup. The app can manage events and sync with Google Calendar, Outlook, and CalDAV. It also offers date-specific memos and reminders; recent notes and memo functions depend on handwriting support.

Check the Calendar Memo documentation and your device’s available features before relying on it as a reminder system. A planner that stays in one place is useful only if its reminders and synchronization work as you expect.
Turn an older BOOX into a reading display
Tom’s Hardware reported on December 23, 2025, that developer Alireza Alavi repurposed an older BOOX Note Air 2 as a VNC display for reading lengthy documents. In his reported setup, an initial Deskreen attempt over Wi-Fi had unacceptable streaming quality and input lag; he switched to VNC and used the Android AVNC client. The report says setup took about 20 minutes on his Linux PC. That timing and result describe one person’s experience, not a general setup estimate or guarantee.

The practical case is casual reading of static material, not using the BOOX like a fast monitor. The report notes latency and says the arrangement was less suitable for drawing. Expect frequent screen changes and precise input to feel like poor matches for an older E Ink device.

Before installing apps or mounting the device
- Check Android and app compatibility. BOOX devices run Android, but a general statement that compatible apps can be installed does not establish that a specific current app will work on an older model.
- Confirm handwriting support. Calendar Memo’s memo and recent-note features are model-dependent.
- Match the task to screen behavior. Prefer text and information that can remain visible; avoid tasks that depend on animation, rapid refresh, or precise drawing.
- Plan power and placement. For a recipe or task-list screen, consider screen wake behavior, a safe way to mount the device, and whether it can remain powered in that location.
- Account for interaction needs. A task may require color, touch, or faster response than the device can comfortably provide.
How to pick the right repurpose
- Identify the exact BOOX model and its Android version.
- Decide whether the device needs to be handwritten on, or only viewed.
- Choose a mostly static task that suits E Ink, such as a planner, a recipe, or reading documents.
- Verify that the required built-in feature or app works on that model.
- For a fixed display, check power, wake behavior, and a safe mounting position before leaving the device in place.
