If a restaurant location closes, contact the gift card issuer before assuming the card is worthless or traveling to another branch. Ask whether the balance is accepted at other locations, online, or by a successor business, and get the answer and any deadline in writing. If the whole company has shut down, redemption is less certain; preserve your records and consider asking your payment-card issuer about a dispute or contacting your state consumer-protection office.
First determine what closed
A single location closing does not automatically mean a chain-issued card is unusable. The company may still accept it at other branches or through online ordering. If the entire business has stopped operating, there may be no active issuer able to redeem it. The Federal Trade Commission notes that a company in bankruptcy may honor gift cards, and a competitor may choose to accept them, but neither outcome is guaranteed. FTC guidance on gift cards
Check whether and where the card is accepted
- Use the issuer’s official website or customer-service channel. Ask whether the card remains valid, what its current balance is, and which locations or ordering channels accept it. Michigan’s consumer guidance also recommends contacting the merchant and checking its website. Michigan gift-card guidance
- Ask about a deadline and get the answer in writing. Save an email or screenshot showing the balance, permitted locations or channels, and any stated use-by date. Federal rules limit expiration dates and fees for certain gift cards, but do not ensure that a failed business can pay its obligations. FTC guidance on gift cards
- Verify any alternative before relying on it. If a competitor has taken over the location or says it will accept the card, confirm directly with that business before placing an order or making a trip. A rumor, old balance page, or unconfirmed statement is not proof of acceptance.
Preserve evidence of the card and closure
Keep the physical card or its number, the purchase receipt, any balance-check results, the closure notice, and all messages with the restaurant or a successor. If the card is refused, note when and where you tried to use it and what response you received. This documentation can help if you contact your payment-card issuer or file a consumer complaint.
Consider a payment-card dispute if you bought the gift card with a credit card
Contact the credit-card issuer promptly and ask whether it can review a dispute or refund request. Eligibility, deadlines, and outcomes depend on the transaction and issuer, so do not assume a refund is available. On October 8, 2025, the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General advised consumers with unused Iron Hill Brewery cards to seek refunds from their credit-card companies after the brewery closed all restaurant locations and filed Chapter 7 bankruptcy in New Jersey. That was guidance for a particular closure, not a guarantee for other purchases. Pennsylvania Attorney General consumer alert

File a state consumer complaint if the business will not help
If the issuer does not respond or refuses redemption, you can submit a complaint to the consumer-protection office for the relevant state or territory. USAGov provides an official directory. Include the card’s value, purchase date and payment method, closure information, your attempts to redeem it, and the outcome you are seeking. A complaint documents the issue and may prompt agency review; it does not guarantee repayment. USAGov directory of state consumer protection offices
Check for a bankruptcy case when the company has filed
If the restaurant company filed for bankruptcy, look for current case information through official court sources and check whether notices or filing deadlines apply to gift-card holders. State law and any case-specific court orders can affect the available options. The facts here do not establish a particular consumer’s legal entitlement, chargeback eligibility, or priority in a bankruptcy case, so use official state or court information for the specific business and location.
