When NYT Connections stops making sense, do not spend the next guess on the first four words that look related. Pause, reread all 16 words, test alternate meanings, and demand a precise explanation for every proposed group. If that fails, use a graduated hint rather than jumping straight to the answer.
The method below is designed to preserve the satisfaction of solving the board while reducing avoidable mistakes. It separates reliable game rules from player-reported experiments, so you know which advice is a rule and which is simply worth trying.
Know what the puzzle is asking
Connections gives you 16 words. Your job is to divide them into four groups of four, with one shared connection defining each group. The groups are color-coded by difficulty: yellow is intended to be easiest and purple the trickiest. You get a single board, and the puzzle has exactly one solution.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe difficulty is intentional. The New York Times says words may fit multiple categories, so an apparent connection is not enough by itself. Editors curate the words and categories using the Oxford Dictionary. A group is correct only when its four members fit one precise idea and the other 12 words can still be divided into three valid groups.

A new puzzle releases at midnight in your local time zone. The daily game is available through the Games app, NYTimes.com/games/connections, nytimes.com/theathletic, and the News app. The archive reaches back to June 12, 2023 for All Access and Games subscribers. Archive play can affect some statistics but not your streak, and a completed archive puzzle cannot be replayed. Access terms can change, so check the current Help Center wording if an archive option is missing.
A repeatable reset when you are stuck
Use this sequence before submitting another guess. It is deliberately slow for one or two minutes; the goal is to replace a vague feeling of “these belong together” with a testable explanation.
- Stop treating your first idea as a fact. A tempting quartet is only a hypothesis until it survives the rest of the board. If you have not submitted it, move those words mentally back into the full set.
- Read all 16 words again. Scan from left to right and then in a different order. A word that looked ordinary in isolation may become distinctive beside the remaining terms.
- List alternate senses. For each troublesome word, ask whether it can be a noun, verb, adjective, name, abbreviation, sound-alike, or part of a familiar phrase. Also test less-common dictionary meanings. Players often get stuck because they keep one familiar definition in place.
- Mark confidence, not just membership. Put a mental star beside words that fit a category exactly and a question mark beside words that fit only generally. A broad “things found in a house” connection is weaker than a narrow phrase that naturally takes all four words.
- Look for a fifth candidate. If five words appear to share a theme, the theme is probably not isolated yet. Compare the precision of each fit and identify which word has a stronger relationship elsewhere. This is a player-reported tactic, not an official rule, but it exposes many deliberate decoys.
- Inspect word structure. Try synonyms, words that can precede or follow one shared term, homophones, abbreviations, and repeated letter patterns. These are prompts for inspection, not a guaranteed list of category types.
- Change the layout. Use the shuffle control, or copy the words onto paper in a new order. Players report that this breaks the influence of the original arrangement. The official rules establish intentional ambiguity, but they do not establish that shuffling improves results; treat it as a low-cost experiment.
- State the category in a short phrase. Say something such as “words that follow ___” or “___ with a silent first letter,” then test every proposed member against that exact wording. If you need an exception, a special pronunciation, or an explanation that changes halfway through, keep searching.
- Check the leftovers. Remove the four words only in your head and see whether the remaining 12 can plausibly form three groups of four. A set that looks good alone but leaves an impossible remainder is probably the trap.
- Submit only with a defensible link. You do not need certainty that no other connection exists, but you should be able to explain why these four belong together more precisely than any alternative combination.
How to challenge an apparent category
Connections is built around overlap. Four words can share a loose topic while one of them also participates in the intended category elsewhere. The useful question is not “Can I connect these?” but “Is this the most specific connection available for exactly these four?”

Separate broad topics from exact relationships
“Animals,” “things in a kitchen,” and “words associated with travel” are usually too broad to guide a submission. Look for a relationship that can be stated without exceptions: a shared prefix or suffix, a set of words that follows one verb, four names with the same abbreviation, or four terms that are pronounced alike. The category should explain why those four were selected instead of several near-synonyms on the board.
Revisit familiar words
A word such as “LOCK” can suggest a door, hair, a group of hair, or a mechanism. That example illustrates the kind of ambiguity players report; it is not an official example from a particular daily puzzle. When a word feels obvious, deliberately ask what it could mean in another part of speech or phrase. The less familiar interpretation is often the one that makes the board solvable.
Use grammar as evidence
Read a candidate category aloud. If three words fit as verbs and the fourth works only as a noun, that mismatch matters. Conversely, a category may intentionally rely on a shared grammatical role that you have not noticed. Write the proposed phrase and each word next to it; awkward wording is a signal to investigate, not proof that the group is wrong.

When three groups seem solved and the last four are a mystery
This is the most common point at which solvers report running out of ideas. The remaining words are not necessarily a special “purple” trick; they may be evidence that one of the three groups you removed was misclassified.

- Reopen the least precise solved group first. Choose the set whose explanation depended on a broad topic, a pun you had to force, or a word with an unusual exception.
- Return one removed word at a time. Compare it with each of the four remaining words. A single returned word can reveal that the apparent final category was created by an earlier decoy.
- Search for a shared construction. Put each remaining word before and after a common term, and test synonyms or homophones. The last group often depends on how words combine rather than what they denote.
- Apply the four-member test again. Every candidate must contain exactly four words and leave two complete groups after it is removed. Do not accept a category merely because the final four are the only words left.
If the board still resists, take a short break instead of guessing repeatedly. A fresh reading can expose a different sense without consuming a mistake.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use mistakes as information
A wrong submission is not just a lost chance. It tells you how the board is misleading you. After a mistake, record which word felt least certain and which alternative category you ignored. On a later puzzle, watch for the same reasoning error: broad topical groups, a word locked to its most common definition, or a phrase relationship overlooked because the words were scattered.
Do not infer that a tactic is guaranteed to improve your score. Shuffling, writing the words down, scanning for a fifth candidate, and testing alternate senses are community-reported experiments. They are useful because they change how you inspect the board, not because the New York Times has published evidence that any one of them raises completion rates.

Common failure modes and precise fixes
| What goes wrong | Why it fails | Fix on the current board |
|---|---|---|
| You submit the first obvious quartet. | Several words can fit a deliberately broad theme. | Find a fifth candidate and state the connection more narrowly before submitting. |
| You insist on one definition. | A familiar sense hides a name, phrase, sound-alike, or secondary dictionary meaning. | List another part of speech and one alternate sense for each uncertain word. |
| You accept a category with exceptions. | The explanation is being bent to fit the words rather than describing them. | Rewrite the category as one short phrase and reject any member that needs a special excuse. |
| You solve by visual position. | The initial layout can make nearby words feel related. | Shuffle the board or rewrite the words in alphabetical order. |
| You protect three “solved” groups. | One of them may contain the decoy that makes the last four impossible. | Reopen the least precise group and return its words to the full board. |
| You read comments too early. | Community discussion can reveal answers even when you wanted a hint. | Use a single hint level and stop before the comments section if you want to remain unspoiled. |
What a 2025 study does—and does not—tell you
A 2025 COLING conference paper examined NYT Connections as a text-classification task. One experimental setup, called “Full Hints,” told participants when they were one word away from a correct grouping. That describes the study condition; it does not prove that the everyday checklist above improves a player’s results, nor does it turn the experiment into a consumer solving guide.
The available material does not establish a suitable headline percentage for player success. Performance numbers depend on the table, population, prompts, and task condition, so quoting an isolated figure would be misleading. The NYT Help Center likewise does not publish a named statistic describing typical player performance.
Choose the right stopping point
There is no single correct amount of help. Stop after the checklist if you want a clean daily result. Take a directional hint if you want to learn a category type while preserving most of the deduction. Read the full explanation when your priority is understanding the editor’s construction rather than protecting the solve.
Whichever point you choose, write down the connection that fooled you. Over time, that record becomes more useful than memorizing isolated answers: it shows whether you routinely overlook alternate meanings, accept broad themes, or fail to reconsider an early group. The next time the board feels impossible, return to the exact-member test and the leftover check before spending a guess.
