First identify the exact Xperia model, Android version and Google Play system-update date, then compare that model with Sony’s published security-support end date. A missing Android version upgrade does not automatically mean security patches have ended. Regional or carrier certification can delay a release, while a passed security end date means the phone is outside Sony’s stated maintenance window. Use the built-in updater and Sony Support app to verify the situation before deciding whether to keep, replace or retire the phone.
Check your Xperia’s support status before doing anything else
“No update” can describe several different situations: Sony may not have released the next major Android version for your region, your carrier may still be certifying it, the phone may have reached its final Android version but still receive security patches, or the published security window may have ended. Work through these checks in order so you know which case applies.

1. Find the exact model and installed Android version
- Open Settings.
- Tap About phone. On some Xperia software versions, the path is Settings > System > About phone.
- Record the model name or model number and the value beside Android version.
The model number matters because similarly named phones can have different update schedules. Write down the carrier and country in which the phone is being used as well; Sony says availability can vary by country, region and operator.

Android’s Google Play system components are updated independently of Sony’s full firmware package. In Settings > Security, open Google Play system update. Install anything offered, restart when prompted and check the date again. A current Google Play system date does not extend Sony’s Xperia firmware-support promise, but it can keep important components patched after a major Android upgrade has stopped.

3. Use Sony’s Support app
Open the preinstalled Support app and select its software or Xperia-software section. Sony says this area can show the current Android version, upcoming Android versions when information is available, Xperia software information and release notes. Compare what the app reports with your phone’s model number, not just the marketing name shown on the box.
4. Compare the model with Sony’s published table
Sony’s model table lists Android progressions and a security-update end date. The dates below are Sony-published support commitments, not estimates. They are also subject to the model, region and operator qualifications shown by Sony.
| Model | Android progression listed by Sony | Security updates through |
|---|---|---|
| Xperia 1 V | Android 13 → 14 → 15 | 2026-05-01 |
| Xperia 10 V | Not stated in the supplied Sony table summary | 2026-06-01 |
| Xperia 5 V | Not stated in the supplied Sony table summary | 2026-08-01 |
| Xperia 1 VI | Android 14 → 15 → 16 | 2028-04-01 |
| Xperia 1 VII | Android 15 → 16 | 2031-04-01 |
Use the date for your exact model rather than inferring support from the phone’s launch year or from another Xperia. Sony can revise information in a later notice, so check the table and Support app again if your model’s status is unclear.

An Android version upgrade changes the platform release and may add user-facing features, APIs and compatibility changes. Security maintenance consists of patches for vulnerabilities and fixes delivered through Sony firmware and, separately, Google Play system components. A phone can receive no further major Android upgrade yet continue receiving security patches until the published end date.
For example, Sony lists the Xperia 1 V as moving from Android 13 to 14 to 15, with security updates through 2026-05-01. The Xperia 1 VI is listed as Android 14 to 15 to 16, with security updates through 2028-04-01. Reaching Android 15 on the 1 V therefore does not by itself prove that support has ended; the security date is the decisive manufacturer-published boundary.
Check two separate answers:
- Newest Android version listed: the final major operating-system release Sony identifies for that model.
- Security-update end date: the last date in Sony’s stated maintenance window.
Apps can also stop supporting an older Android release before Sony’s security date. Conversely, an app may continue working after Sony support ends. Treat app compatibility and manufacturer security support as separate risks when making a keep-or-replace decision.
Why another Xperia may update before yours
Sony warns that phone and Android-version availability depends on country, region and operator, and that its lists cover supported devices only. Operators often certify firmware for their network, and manufacturers commonly release software in stages. Two otherwise identical Xperia phones can therefore show different update dates.
Carrier and regional checks
- Confirm the model code in Settings > About phone, then compare it with the model variant sold for your country.
- Check whether the phone was purchased from a carrier or imported. Imported firmware may follow the sales region rather than your current location.
- Install any carrier-configuration or system update that appears before checking again.
- Ask the operator whether its certification is pending if Sony lists the release but the phone does not offer it.
Do not label a device end-of-life solely because a friend’s Xperia received an update first. If Sony’s table still shows a future security date for your exact model, a delay is more likely to be regional, carrier-related or staged than a final support cutoff.
When an update is offered but will not install
Use the phone’s own software-update control for current Xperia devices. Sony states that update packages can range from 50 MB to 1.5 GB, so a reliable connection and sufficient battery matter.
- Connect to a stable Wi-Fi network where practical. Avoid interrupting the download by moving between weak networks.
- Charge the phone before starting; Sony recommends charging the device for the update process.
- Open Settings and use the software-update control (the label can appear as System update or Software update depending on Android version).
- Download the package and leave the phone connected to power while it verifies and restarts.
- If the download repeatedly fails, restart the phone, check the connection and try the updater again later. A staged release can also disappear temporarily while Sony or an operator pauses distribution.
Keep enough free storage for the download and temporary installation files, and do not power off during the installation screen. If the built-in updater continues to fail, use the Support app’s software details and release notes for model-specific instructions.
Update apps after the system update
Firmware installation does not automatically update every application. In the Google Play Store, tap your profile image, choose Manage apps & device, open Updates available, then select Update all or update individual apps. This can restore compatibility when an app issue is caused by an outdated app rather than by Android itself.

Do not rely on Xperia Companion for newer models
Sony’s Xperia software-update FAQ states: “The software update function of Xperia Companion is no longer available for Xperia devices released in May 2022 and after.” For those newer devices, use the built-in updater and Sony Support instructions instead of expecting Xperia Companion to deliver firmware updates. Older models may have different guidance, so follow the instructions attached to your exact model.

After Sony’s published security date, the phone no longer has a manufacturer-stated security-maintenance window. It may continue to operate normally, and Google Play system or app updates may still arrive, but there is no longer a Sony commitment covering new Xperia firmware patches.
Assess how exposed your phone is
List the activities performed on the device and classify their consequences if the phone were compromised:
- Banking, brokerage and payment applications.
- Work email, corporate files, remote-access tools and single-sign-on accounts.
- Password managers, passkeys and two-factor-authentication codes.
- Health, identity or government services.
- Low-sensitivity tasks such as music, offline navigation or reading.
If the phone handles high-value accounts, an unsupported security state is a stronger reason to replace it promptly. If it is used only for low-risk tasks, you can reduce exposure by keeping every app and Google Play system component current, removing unused accounts and avoiding sensitive transactions on that device. Those steps reduce risk but do not recreate Sony’s firmware support.

Plan rather than wait for a failure
Back up photos, contacts, messages and authenticator recovery information while the phone is working. Verify that you can sign in to critical accounts on another device before handing the Xperia in for recycling or resale. Check battery condition, repair cost and app compatibility as part of the same decision; a phone that is technically supported but unreliable may still be poor value.
Be cautious with unofficial firmware
Installing an unofficial ROM is not a guaranteed way to restore secure support. A model-specific bootloader policy, working drivers, verified maintenance process and trustworthy security updates would all need to be established. Without that evidence, treat custom firmware as an advanced experiment rather than a substitute for a manufacturer-supported phone, especially for banking or work accounts.
Choosing a replacement Xperia
When support life is the deciding factor, compare published dates first and hardware second. Sony lists the Xperia 1 VI and Xperia 1 VII with longer windows than the older examples above.
| Replacement candidate | Android versions listed by Sony | Security-update end date | What to verify before buying |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xperia 1 VI | Android 14 → 15 → 16 | 2028-04-01 | Exact regional model, operator compatibility, current price and availability |
| Xperia 1 VII | Android 15 → 16 | 2031-04-01 | Exact regional model, operator compatibility, current price and availability |
The dates in this table come from Sony’s published model information. They do not guarantee that every country or carrier receives each release on the same day. Retail pricing, inventory and availability change, so verify those details at the time of purchase.

- Security end date: choose the phone with a support window long enough for your planned ownership period.
- Remaining Android upgrades: count the major versions Sony still lists, not versions rumored online.
- Regional and carrier fit: confirm bands, eSIM or SIM configuration and operator certification for your market.
- Hardware needs: compare battery endurance, camera features, storage and repairability with how you actually use the phone.
- Total cost: include accessories, data transfer, repairs and the value of keeping the old Xperia as an offline backup.
A practical decision checklist
- Model number and Android version recorded from About phone.
- Google Play system update checked under Settings > Security.
- Sony Support app consulted for software details and release notes.
- Exact model compared with Sony’s security end date.
- Country, region and carrier considered before declaring an update missing.
- Battery charged and Wi-Fi used for any available 50 MB to 1.5 GB package.
- Play Store apps updated separately.
- Security-sensitive accounts reviewed if the support date has passed.
- Backups and authenticator recovery details verified before replacement.
If the date is still in the future, continue checking Sony and your operator for the staged release. If the date has passed, decide based on your risk profile and app requirements rather than waiting indefinitely for another major Android version.
