If an Xfinity router or gateway is marked end of life (EOL) or unsupported, Xfinity says it is no longer supported on its network and will not install, activate, or recommend it. That policy does not establish that every device already online is disconnected immediately. Check the exact model in Xfinity’s current equipment information and read any notice sent to your account before deciding what to do.
What “losing software support” means
Software support and network compatibility are related, but they are not the same thing. Comcast says it automatically updates leased cable modems and wireless gateways. Updates for purchased modems depend on the device remaining compatible and its manufacturer continuing to maintain the software. In separate guidance, Xfinity defines EOL equipment as no longer supported on its network.
Xfinity’s wording is direct: “Devices that are identified as EOL are no longer supported on the Xfinity network.” Xfinity’s EOL guidance does not provide a universal cutoff date for every model or say that every active connection ends as soon as support stops.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Comcast notes that older equipment may lack current speed and security capabilities, and that devices can become less secure as vulnerabilities are discovered. Those are general reasons to keep equipment maintained; they do not establish that a particular Xfinity model has a specific vulnerability. See Comcast’s home-network security guidance.

How to check whether your device is affected
- Find the model. Check the label on the modem or gateway, or look in your account or device settings.
- Search Xfinity’s current equipment information. Use the exact manufacturer and model, not just the brand name. Check both whether Xfinity supports it and whether it can handle your subscribed speed tier. The Xfinity customer-owned equipment information explains compatibility requirements.
- Read any account notice. If Xfinity has notified you that your equipment is EOL or unsupported, use that notice and the current support page to determine the next step. The general EOL policy alone does not tell you when an individual connection will stop working.
What renters should do
If you rent your equipment from Xfinity, check the EOL equipment upgrade page or contact Xfinity about an update, order, or exchange. The online option is not available to every customer, and some routes may involve additional fees. Confirm eligibility and any cost for your account rather than assuming a replacement is free.
What owners should do
If you own the modem or gateway, verify the exact model’s current Xfinity compatibility and supported speed before replacing it. Xfinity allows customer-owned equipment when it is compatible with the service and can support the customer’s speed tier. Choose based on those requirements and the modem and Wi-Fi capabilities your home needs; the cited Xfinity information does not establish a model-by-model replacement ranking.
Rank #2
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
If you are deciding between renting and owning, include software maintenance in the choice: Comcast says leased gateways receive automatic updates, while updates to purchased devices depend on compatibility and continued vendor maintenance. Xfinity also describes the benefits of renting an xFi Gateway.
What to do with the old router or gateway
Follow Xfinity’s return instructions if the equipment is rented. For equipment you are disposing of, Xfinity lists return options and local electronic recycling, and says not to put the device in household trash. Check the equipment upgrade and disposal guidance for the available options.
