No—there is no reliable way to make a stolen phone completely untraceable. “Trace” can mean a location shown by a phone’s account, a carrier identifying or blocking a handset, or police investigating a theft. Those are separate processes, and none guarantees a precise location or recovery. If your phone has been stolen, use its official lost-device controls, protect your accounts, contact your carrier and police, and do not go to a map location yourself.
What “traceable” means—and what it does not
A stolen phone may be involved in several distinct systems. A platform feature such as Apple Find My can show an owner a device’s reported location and offer controls such as locking it. A carrier can use the handset’s IMEI to identify or block it from network service, subject to its procedures. Police may use information from the owner, carrier, or other enquiries in an investigation. A location shown in an app is not the same as a confirmed address, and blocking network access is not the same as locating the phone. Results depend on the device, settings, provider, and jurisdiction.

What to do first if your phone is stolen
- Use the official lost-device feature from another trusted device. For an Apple device, use Find My to mark it as lost. Apple says Lost Mode locks the screen and can display a contact message; remote erase is also available if needed. For Android, use the device’s official lost-device controls, such as Remote Lock where supported. These controls depend on the relevant feature being enabled and available.
- Report the theft to local police. Share the IMEI, a description of the phone, and any information from the lost-device service. Police.uk’s reporting guidance is for the UK; reporting channels and procedures differ by location.
- Contact your carrier promptly. Ask it to block the SIM or handset where supported and protect the number. Ask how to stop verification messages or calls reaching the stolen phone or number. Carrier procedures vary.
- Protect financial and personal accounts. Contact banks and other financial providers, change passwords for email and financial accounts, and sign out other sessions where the service permits it. Email is especially important because it may be used to reset other passwords.
- Consider remote erase if data protection requires it. Check the official guidance for your device before taking an irreversible step. Apple says Activation Lock can continue to deter reactivation after an iPhone is erased; erasing does not necessarily remove that protection.
- Check your existing insurance policy. If theft may be covered, follow the insurer’s reporting and claim requirements. Coverage depends on the policy.
Why a tracking pin is not a safe recovery plan
Location data can help police, but it can be imprecise. In a 2024 FOI response, the Metropolitan Police Service said a phone shown at a particular location in a built-up area could in reality be at one of several nearby houses or flats. Give any location information to police and let them decide what enquiries are appropriate; do not confront a person or enter a property based on an app pin.

The same disclosure refers to “over 12,000 phones stolen by means of robbery or theft snatch” in the Met’s local context. That figure is not a national annual total or a recovery rate. The response says the Met recovers only a small fraction, without specifying an exact fraction.

What IMEI can—and cannot—do
An IMEI is a handset identifier, not a magic locator. Police.uk advises recording it somewhere other than the phone and providing it to police and the phone provider after a theft. The provider may be able to block the handset. Do not assume a website that promises to locate a phone from its IMEI can provide a legitimate or accurate live location.
If you do not have the number saved, check a purchase record, the phone’s packaging, or an account or device record you can access safely. Do not delay reporting the theft while trying to find it; tell police and your provider what information you do have.

Account locks can limit use, but do not guarantee recovery
For Apple devices, Activation Lock is linked to Find My. Apple says that when Find My is on, the owner’s Apple Account password is required to turn off Find My, erase the device, or reactivate and use it. Marking the phone as lost and protecting account credentials are therefore useful owner steps, but they do not show where a device is with certainty or ensure police can recover it.
Android lost-device options vary by device and setup. Use the official controls associated with your account and device rather than third-party services promising to defeat protections or expose a location. Google’s Find Hub policy prohibits tracking people or property that does not belong to the user and warns that non-consensual tracking or stalking may be a crime.
