Do not try to get around the block first. Ask your teacher what the assignment allows, then ask the school’s IT lead or data-protection contact whether the restriction is a technical filter or a policy decision. Explain the learning task you were using the tool for and request an approved tool, a non-AI alternative, or an accessibility accommodation that meets the same need. A personal device, account, or mobile connection does not automatically make use permitted.
Start by finding out what is actually restricted
A blocked page can mean several different things: the school network may filter a site for security reasons; the tool may be disallowed for your age group; your school may prohibit generative AI for a particular subject or assignment; or the service may not have passed the school’s privacy and safeguarding review. The correct response depends on which of these applies.
Ask two separate questions rather than treating the block as a challenge to overcome:
- What does this assignment permit? Your teacher is responsible for the learning task and can tell you whether AI is allowed, limited to brainstorming or practice, or prohibited entirely.
- Why is access restricted? The IT lead, data-protection officer, or another designated contact can explain whether the setting is a network control, an approved-use list, an age restriction, or a wider school policy.
UK Department for Education guidance tells schools to check tool approval, understand how personal data is handled, and consult the IT lead or data-protection officer. Chicago Public Schools’ student guidance likewise requires teacher permission before students use generative AI for academic work. Those principles are useful even when your school follows a different jurisdiction’s rules.

Ask your teacher about this specific assignment
Do not ask only, “Can I use AI?” Describe the exact work and the help you wanted. A teacher can often approve a safer method when the request is specific.
Questions to ask
- Is AI allowed for this assignment, and if so, for which stages?
- May I use it to generate practice questions, organize an outline, translate a passage, or receive feedback?
- Must I use a school-approved service or a teacher-provided resource?
- How should I acknowledge or cite any permitted AI assistance?
- What should I do if the blocked tool was supporting a disability or another access need?
Keep the teacher’s answer with your assignment notes. Policies can differ by subject, year group, assessment, and even by stage of the same project. Permission to brainstorm does not necessarily include permission to submit AI-generated text, code, images, or answers.
Ask the school whether the block is technical or policy-based
Once you know what the teacher permits, contact the school’s IT lead, data-protection officer, or equivalent. Explain the message you see, the school device or network you were using, and the educational task involved. Do not send private student records or the assignment itself to an unapproved service just to demonstrate the problem.
What the school contact can clarify
- Whether the service is blocked for everyone, only on school-managed devices, or only on the school network.
- Whether the school has an approved account, a safer configuration, or another service for the same function.
- Whether the tool has age limits, requires parental consent, or is restricted under safeguarding rules.
- Whether a temporary exception is possible for a supervised lesson.
- Who handles an accessibility or reasonable-adjustment request.
A technical explanation does not equal permission. Conversely, a policy restriction may still have an approved route for a supervised activity or an accommodation. Ask for the rule in writing or for a link to the school’s current policy so you can follow the correct version.
Describe the job you need done, not a particular brand
Schools are more likely to help when you identify the function that matters. A blocked assistant may have been doing one of several jobs:

Ask, “What approved method can provide this support?” rather than insisting that one blocked service is the only solution. The alternative may be less convenient but still meet the learning objective.
If access is an accommodation issue, say so explicitly
If the tool helped because of dyslexia, a visual or motor impairment, a communication disability, a language barrier, or another access need, tell the teacher or the school’s special-education or accessibility contact. You do not need to disclose more medical information than the school’s process requires. State what barrier you encounter and what function would remove it.

Pennsylvania guidance also recommends checking that learners with disabilities can access an AI-enabled tool. Neither statement guarantees that a particular service must be approved; it means the school should consider an effective, safe way for you to participate.
Useful wording
“The blocked tool was providing text-to-speech and helping me turn long instructions into a checklist. What approved accommodation or school service can provide those functions for this assignment?”
Ask how the accommodation will be documented and who can authorize it. Continue following the assignment’s authorship rules: an accommodation can change how you access or express learning without permitting work you are required to produce independently.

Do not bypass the school’s controls
Using a personal phone, home computer, alternate network, VPN, proxy, personal account, or a mirror site does not automatically make the use acceptable. The rule may apply to the assignment, the school setting, or the handling of student data rather than to one Wi-Fi network.

Victoria says some tools are blocked on departmental networks for information-security, privacy, and child-safety reasons. Bypassing a control can expose your account or other students’ information, violate the acceptable-use policy, and create an academic-integrity problem even if the page loads.
If you already tried another route, stop, tell the teacher what happened, and ask how to proceed. Do not conceal the attempt or submit material produced under unclear rules.
Protect personal and confidential information
Until the school has specifically approved a tool and its use, keep identifying and confidential information out of it. That includes your full name, contact details, student number, school records, photographs, health or disability information, another student’s work, and unpublished coursework containing personal details.
Before entering anything, check
- Who operates the service and whether the school has approved it.
- What data it collects, retains, or uses to improve the service.
- Whether the account is age-appropriate and managed by the school.
- Whether the school has obtained any required consent.
- Whether the teacher has limited the task to fictional or anonymized material.
Replace names with neutral labels, remove identifying details, and use a short fictional example when your teacher permits the tool but has not approved real student data. Anonymizing text does not make every use permissible; the tool and assignment still need approval.

Verify the output and disclose permitted use
AI output can be inaccurate, incomplete, biased, or unsuitable for your course. Check calculations, quotations, dates, translations, code behavior, and claims against your textbook, class notes, or reliable sources. You remain responsible for the submitted work.
Follow the teacher’s required acknowledgment format. Chicago Public Schools tells students to identify and cite AI-generated content and explain how it was used. UK Department for Education guidance recommends acknowledging or referencing AI use and checking accuracy. Your school may require a statement such as the tool’s name, date, prompts, edited portions, or a record of what it contributed. If the assignment says “no AI,” do not submit AI-assisted work merely because you rewrote it.
Keep a simple use record
- Date and assignment stage.
- Approved tool or school resource used.
- Purpose, such as practice questions or translation.
- What you checked, changed, rejected, or wrote yourself.
This record helps you answer questions about authorship and makes it easier to reproduce your own reasoning without relying on an unverified answer.

There is no universal rule that every school follows. UK Department for Education guidance says schools and colleges may choose different AI uses, including limiting them to staff, administration, particular subjects, or particular age groups, while meeting their wider legal and safeguarding duties.

These examples show why advice from a friend, a video, or a different country may not apply to your class. Your teacher’s assignment instructions and your school or district’s current policy control your situation.

Use this checklist when proposing an alternative
Before asking for approval, compare the proposed method on the dimensions that affect both learning and safety:
- Assignment permission: Has the teacher approved this use for this task?
- School approval: Is the service or resource on the school’s approved list?
- Age and safeguarding: Does it meet the applicable age, supervision, filtering, and monitoring requirements?
- Privacy: What personal data does it collect or retain, and can you avoid entering student information?
- Accessibility: Does it provide the adjustment you need, or is another accommodation better?
- Verification: Can you independently check the result and explain your own work?
- Disclosure: Can you follow the required acknowledgment or citation rule?
If any answer is unknown, pause and ask the school rather than guessing.
What to do in common situations
The page is blocked, but the teacher says AI is allowed
Ask the teacher for the approved service or for an exception handled by IT. Provide the error message and explain the permitted task. Do not switch to an unapproved service while waiting.

Use the stated non-AI method and ask what resources are allowed. If the block prevents an accessibility accommodation, raise that separately with the school’s accessibility contact.
You used the tool before realizing it was restricted
Stop using it, save no further personal data there, and tell the teacher exactly what you used it for. Ask whether you must redo the work and how to document the incident.
You need translation or reading support immediately
Tell the teacher that the need is access-related, ask for an approved resource, and request a reasonable adjustment if appropriate. Do not paste identifiable student information into a public service to meet a deadline.
A short message you can send
“I’m working on [assignment]. The school network blocks the tool I had been using for [specific function]. Could you confirm what AI use this assignment permits? If that tool is not approved, which school resource or non-AI method should I use? I also need to know how to acknowledge any permitted assistance and whether an accessibility accommodation is available.”
