A large battery does not guarantee a particular runtime. The useful first step is to open your phone’s battery-usage screen and compare its recent pattern with normal use on that same device. Look for an app doing excessive background work, notifications waking the phone, weak cellular coverage, or temporary optimization after setup or an update. Then apply the fix that matches the evidence. If the drain continues after those checks, use the phone’s battery-health or diagnostic feature and contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider.
Why a phone with a large battery can still lose charge quickly
Battery capacity is only one part of runtime. The display, cellular modem, Wi-Fi, location services, cameras, audio, app synchronization and operating-system tasks can draw power at very different rates. A phone searching for a signal in a low-coverage area may consume more energy than the same phone connected to a strong network. Navigation, music playback, photo uploads and frequent mail fetching can continue when you are not looking at the app.
Recent software or a new setup can also make consumption look abnormal for a limited period. Apps may be restored, indexed and optimized; system tasks may finish in the background. Google says Pixel optimization after setup or a factory reset can take a few weeks to take full effect. Google also advises seeking help if unusual drain remains for more than a few days after an update. Samsung says first-use optimization can affect battery use during the first few days, while Apple advises checking again after update-related background work has had time to finish. These are manufacturer guidance periods, not guarantees of a specific battery life.

1. Confirm that the drain is unusual on your device
Use the built-in usage report before changing settings. It distinguishes time spent actively using an app from background activity and system work. Compare the result with the same phone’s recent pattern, not with a generic screen-time claim or another person’s handset.
iPhone
- Open Settings > Battery.
- Review Daily Usage. Apple’s battery page compares current use with the previous seven days and lists the three apps that used the most battery that day.
- Tap View All Battery Usage to expose additional days and system activity, then tap an app for more detail.
Apple’s instructions are available in If the battery in your iPhone or iPad drains too quickly and its iPhone battery usage and health guide.
Google Pixel
- Open Settings > Battery > Battery usage.
- Review usage by app and look for an app whose activity is out of proportion to what you did with it.
- On Pixel 6 and later, open Battery diagnostics > Battery draining too quickly for the built-in check.
Pixel menu names and available diagnostics can vary with model and software version. Google’s troubleshooting instructions are at Fix battery drain problem.
Samsung Galaxy
- Open Settings > Battery.
- Inspect the battery graph and the detailed app-usage list.
- Note whether the graph shows a steady loss while the phone is idle or a sharp drop during a particular activity.
Exact labels can differ by Galaxy model and software. Samsung’s guidance is in What to do when your Samsung Galaxy device battery drains faster.
2. Read the report instead of blaming the top percentage
An app at the top of the list is not automatically defective. A navigation app can legitimately use substantial power during a long drive; a music app may be playing with the screen off; a photo service may be uploading a large library. Check both the amount of battery attributed to the app and the time it was active or running in the background.
Background activity
Background work includes music playback, location tracking, turn-by-turn directions, photo synchronization and mail fetching. Apple lists these as examples of activity that can continue when an app is not visible. Google recommends leaving app optimization on by default and restricting only apps whose background activity is unnecessary. If one downloaded app stands out, update it first, then review its background permissions or battery setting.
Weak or absent signal
Low or no cellular coverage makes a phone search for a signal or operate in a low-signal environment. Apple says stronger Wi-Fi and cellular signals use less energy; Samsung also identifies unstable network signal as a drain factor. Compare the battery graph in places with reliable Wi-Fi or cellular service. If you will have no coverage for a while, Airplane Mode can prevent repeated network searches, but calls and cellular messages will not work while it is enabled.
Notifications that wake the phone
Every alert can wake the display, start radios or trigger synchronization. Apple specifically identifies notifications as a possible cause. Turn off or reduce alerts for apps that do not need immediate attention, while keeping notifications you rely on for calls, security codes, health or work.
Setup and update tasks
Do not treat a new phone or a recently updated phone as failed hardware immediately. Samsung says first-use optimization may raise consumption during the first few days. Google says Pixel optimization after setup or a factory reset may take a few weeks, and recommends support if unusual drain remains after a few days following an update. Apple similarly advises checking again after update tasks finish in the background. Keep the phone connected to power and a reliable network during normal idle periods so those tasks can complete, but continue monitoring the usage screen.
Battery condition
Runtime depends on the battery’s condition as well as software and hardware use. A battery-health reading can show whether the cell has lost capacity or whether the problem is more likely an app, signal or system task. If the phone offers no health estimate, the usage report and an authorized diagnostic are more useful than guessing from the battery’s advertised size.

3. Apply a targeted fix
When one app is responsible
- Install any available update for the app and for the phone’s operating system.
- Open the app’s battery or background-permission settings and restrict background use if you do not need it to refresh continuously.
- Force-stop the app only when appropriate. Google warns that force-stopping essential apps or services can make the phone work incorrectly.
- If the app remains abnormal and is nonessential, uninstall it and observe the battery report afterward.
On Galaxy phones, Samsung documents putting infrequently used apps to sleep and uninstalling apps with high battery use. A deep-sleeping app runs only when you open it, so its background notifications or other automatic functions may stop.

- Use Wi-Fi when it is available and its signal is strong.
- Avoid leaving the phone searching for service in a basement, remote area or other dead zone when you do not need cellular connectivity.
- On supported iPhone models, open the cellular-data settings and choose 5G Auto if available. Apple says this can switch to LTE when 5G does not provide a noticeably better experience. This is an iPhone-specific option, not a universal Android instruction.
- Use Airplane Mode only when you genuinely do not need calls or cellular data.
When alerts are the problem
Open notification settings and disable nonessential alerts, promotional pushes and high-frequency social updates. Keep alerts that you would act on immediately. Reducing notifications can lower wakeups without disabling the app itself.
When you need extra time from the current charge
Use the phone’s built-in power-saving mode as a temporary measure. On iPhone this is Low Power Mode; on Galaxy it is Power Saving. Depending on the model and settings, these modes can reduce background activity, email fetching, visual effects, high-power network features or Always On Display. The trade-off is delayed synchronization, fewer visual effects or reduced notification immediacy. Power-saving mode extends a charge; it does not identify or repair the underlying cause.

iPhone battery health
On iPhone 15 and later, open Settings > Battery > Battery Health. On iPhone 14 and earlier, open Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging. Apple’s iPhone guide says iPhone 15 and later can show capacity, cycle count, manufacture date and first-use date. Use those details with the battery-usage report: a capacity concern and an idle-drain pattern point toward service, while normal health with one unusually active app points toward software or settings.
Pixel diagnostics
Pixel 6 and later include Battery diagnostics > Battery draining too quickly. Run it after checking the app list and signal conditions. If the diagnostic or your observations indicate a continuing problem, Google directs users to contact support rather than repeatedly changing unrelated settings.

Galaxy software provides the battery graph and detailed app usage under Settings > Battery. Menu names vary, so follow the options shown on your model. If the graph remains abnormal after app and network checks, use Samsung’s support and repair options.
5. Decide when to seek service
Contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider when the drain persists after the relevant app, signal, notification and update checks, or when a battery-health feature indicates service is needed. Apple says rechargeable batteries have limited lifespans and may eventually require replacement, and recommends iPhone battery service through Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. Samsung provides repair-request and support options through its regional support site; availability depends on location and model. Start at Samsung Support for US options.
Before contacting support, record the phone model, operating-system version, date of the last update, approximate idle time, location conditions and the top entries in the battery-usage report. This gives the technician a reproducible description instead of a general claim that the battery is large but short-lived.
6. Keep a factory reset as the last software step
A reset can remove a corrupted app configuration, but it also removes installed apps and their associated data. Google explicitly warns about this consequence. Before considering it, confirm that the drain is not explained by setup or update optimization, back up photos and other local data, verify that you know account credentials, and read the device maker’s reset instructions for your exact model.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDo not reset merely because one app appears high in the list; update, restrict or remove that app first. A reset is reasonable only after targeted changes and diagnostics fail, and only when you can restore the phone safely from a current backup.
Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- Open battery usage. Compare the current pattern with the phone’s prior days.
- Separate active use from background work. Check whether navigation, streaming, syncing or mail fetching explains the result.
- Check signal and notifications. Look for low coverage, repeated searching or unnecessary wakeups.
- Account for timing. Allow the manufacturer’s stated setup or update period—days for some guidance, and up to a few weeks for Pixel optimization—before concluding that hardware has failed.
- Make one targeted change. Restrict or remove the responsible app, improve connectivity or reduce nonessential alerts.
- Use power saving when necessary. Expect reduced background features or delayed notifications.
- Check battery health or diagnostics. Use the model-specific path rather than applying iPhone instructions to Android.
- Escalate with evidence. Contact authorized support if the abnormal pattern remains.
- Reset only with a backup. Treat a factory reset as the final software remedy, not the first.
