If your phone has poor signal or dropped calls in Canada, start by checking where and when the problem occurs—not by buying an accessory. Compare your carrier’s live coverage and outage information, test the same phone indoors and outdoors, restart it, and note the network indicator. A reliable Wi‑Fi connection with supported Wi‑Fi Calling can solve an indoor coverage problem. If calls fail in several locations, have the carrier check your line, SIM or eSIM, device configuration and exact model compatibility, including VoLTE.

The cause may be a local coverage gap, building materials, an outage, a handoff between network areas, a faulty SIM or handset, or an older model that is no longer compatible with the carrier’s voice network. The steps below separate those possibilities without erasing your data or changing your plan unnecessarily.

Why does my phone have poor signal?

Signal strength is not a single, permanent property of a phone. It changes with location, building construction, network load, the carrier’s available technology and the phone’s own compatibility.

Location and coverage

A carrier’s map shows expected service, not a guarantee that a call will work in every room. A basement, rural road, parking garage or valley can have a different result from the nearby area shown on the map. Coverage can also vary between carriers, but a map cannot prove indoor service at your address.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Walls, metal and other obstructions

Concrete, metal, energy-efficient window coatings and several interior walls can weaken reception. Rogers’ support guidance specifically notes that concrete, metal and multiple walls may obstruct service. If a call works outside but fails in one room, the building is a stronger suspect than a damaged phone.

Outages and network transitions

A local outage or maintenance event can affect calls, texts and data temporarily. Calls may also drop while a phone moves between network areas. Rogers notes that a call can end when the phone enters an Extended Coverage area; if the display changes to EXT, call again after the phone has completed that transition.

SIM, handset or compatibility problems

A damaged or incorrectly provisioned SIM, an eSIM configuration issue, a software problem or a radio fault can cause failures in multiple places. Older phones can have a more fundamental issue as providers retire 3G networks: they may lack VoLTE, the technology used for voice on newer networks.

Start with a location and outage check

  1. Identify the pattern. Write down the address or route, approximate time, whether you were indoors or outdoors, whether the phone was stationary or moving, and whether calls, texts or data were affected.
  2. Check the carrier’s live coverage map. Look at the exact places where you use the phone rather than only your city or postal code. Treat the map as an estimate of outdoor or general availability.
  3. Check the carrier’s outage page or support channel. An outage can make otherwise useful troubleshooting irrelevant until service is restored.
  4. Test outside and at a second location. Make a short call outdoors, then repeat it inside and somewhere else. If only one building or room fails, obstruction or indoor coverage is likely. If several unrelated places fail, investigate the device, SIM or account.

Do this comparison before switching plans or purchasing equipment. It gives the carrier evidence that can be matched against a tower or local service issue.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Try low-risk phone checks first

Restart, then retest

Restart the phone completely, wait for it to reconnect to the network, and repeat the same call test. A restart can clear a temporary registration or software state without deleting personal data.

Separate cellular calling from Wi‑Fi Calling

If Wi‑Fi Calling is enabled, briefly turn Wi‑Fi off and place a call over the cellular network. If cellular calling works normally, reconnect to Wi‑Fi and test again. This comparison shows whether the interruption is associated with the Wi‑Fi path rather than the mobile radio.

Use network settings carefully

Rogers’ dropped-call troubleshooting includes checking network settings, trying another network option, testing the SIM in another phone and checking outages. Menu names differ between iPhone, Android and individual software versions, so use the instructions for your exact model or ask the carrier for the current path.

A network-settings reset is more disruptive than a restart. It can delete saved Wi‑Fi networks and passwords and remove paired Bluetooth devices. You will have to reconnect to Wi‑Fi and pair accessories again. Back up any information you need before proceeding and use the phone maker’s or carrier’s documented reset option.

Do not jump to a factory reset. It erases applications, accounts and personal data and is not a universal fix for a coverage or compatibility problem. Treat it as a last resort after a backup and carrier or manufacturer guidance.

Will Wi‑Fi Calling help when you have no cell signal?

It can provide a calling route when cellular reception is weak indoors, provided the phone, carrier and plan support Wi‑Fi Calling and the Wi‑Fi connection is working. It does not create cellular coverage: the call travels over the internet connection to the carrier.

When it is a good fit

  • Calls fail inside one building but work outdoors.
  • Your home or workplace has stable Wi‑Fi.
  • Your exact phone model and plan are listed by the carrier as Wi‑Fi Calling compatible.

Its limits

A congested, unstable or changing Wi‑Fi connection can interrupt a call just as a weak cellular signal can. Moving from Wi‑Fi to cellular, or between Wi‑Fi access points, may cause a handoff failure and require you to redial. Test Wi‑Fi Calling in the rooms where you actually use the phone instead of assuming that a strong Wi‑Fi icon guarantees an uninterrupted call.

Emergency calls over Wi‑Fi

Emergency handling is carrier-specific. Bell explains that when the mobile network is unavailable, an emergency call over Wi‑Fi is sent to a call centre that asks for your location before forwarding the call to the appropriate 9‑1‑1 response centre. Be ready to state your exact location and follow the operator’s instructions; do not assume every carrier uses an identical process.

Check for a 3G phase-out and VoLTE compatibility

The CRTC warns that, after a provider phases out its 3G network, some older phones may no longer make or receive calls or texts, including emergency 9‑1‑1 calls, or use mobile data. A phone can still display bars or connect for data while lacking the voice technology required by the new network.

As the CRTC explains, “VoLTE, which began to be implemented in Canada in 2015, improves call quality and supports enhanced calling features.” Read the CRTC’s 3G network phase-out: essential information for cellphone users guidance, then verify the exact model number—not merely the brand or phone age—with your carrier. Check the phone’s manual or settings for the model identifier and ask whether that precise variant supports the carrier’s VoLTE implementation.

Do not buy a replacement solely because the phone is old or shows fewer signal bars. Replace it only after the carrier confirms that the current model is incompatible, faulty or no longer provisioned for voice service. A VoLTE-capable phone can still have poor reception in a particular building or coverage area.

Test the service with another compatible phone

With carrier guidance, test the SIM in another compatible handset. If the problem follows the SIM or account, the line, provisioning or network is more likely at fault. If the other phone works at the same location, the original handset or its configuration deserves attention.

Do not move an eSIM, delete a cellular plan or alter account settings without the carrier’s instructions. An eSIM transfer can disable service on the original phone and may require reactivation.

Ask the carrier to check the line and device

Request checks of the account, SIM or eSIM, local network conditions, device configuration and VoLTE eligibility. Give the carrier repeatable examples rather than saying only that the signal is “bad.” Include the time, location, indoor or outdoor status, whether you were moving, the displayed network indicator and whether other devices on the same carrier were affected.

Choose the least disruptive remedy that matches the pattern

Remedy Best indication Dependencies Disruption or caution
Coverage and outage check Problem may be local or temporary Carrier’s current map and outage information None; maps do not guarantee service in every room
Restart and controlled call test Sudden or intermittent failure Physical access to the phone Low; does not fix a coverage gap
Wi‑Fi Calling Indoor cellular weakness with reliable Wi‑Fi Supported phone, carrier and plan; stable Wi‑Fi Wi‑Fi changes can interrupt calls; confirm emergency procedure
Network-settings reset Suspected corrupted network configuration Phone instructions or carrier support Saved Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth settings are deleted
SIM test or carrier diagnostic Failures across multiple locations Another compatible phone and carrier guidance More effort; do not move an eSIM casually
VoLTE-compatible replacement Carrier confirms the exact model is incompatible or faulty Verified model compatibility and backup Cost; a new phone cannot fix missing coverage everywhere

When to contact your carrier

Contact support when the problem persists in multiple locations, affects more than one type of service, or continues after a restart and a controlled Wi‑Fi test. Also contact the carrier if the phone shows EXT during a repeatable drop, if a 3G phase-out may affect your model, or if another compatible phone behaves differently with the same SIM.

Have these details ready:

  • Exact phone model and software version.
  • Carrier name and whether the line uses a physical SIM or eSIM.
  • Dates and times of failed calls.
  • Addresses or route segments, with indoor or outdoor conditions.
  • Whether the phone was stationary or moving.
  • Displayed indicator such as LTE, 5G, Wi‑Fi Calling or EXT.
  • Whether texts, data or other phones were affected.

Support can compare the examples with outage records and local network data, verify provisioning, and tell you whether a SIM replacement or model change is justified.

What not to assume

  • More bars always mean a better call. Bars are a rough indication and do not prove that voice service is compatible or that a call will survive a handoff.
  • A coverage-map colour guarantees your room will work. Indoor construction and local conditions can produce a different result.
  • Wi‑Fi Calling is identical on every carrier. Eligibility, setup and emergency-call handling vary by carrier and device.
  • A factory reset is a standard dropped-call fix. It cannot restore a retired network technology and erases personal data.
  • Any phone advertised as VoLTE-compatible will work everywhere. Compatibility must be confirmed for the exact model variant and Canadian carrier.

A practical decision path

  1. If the issue is new, check the carrier outage page and restart the phone.
  2. If it occurs in one building, compare indoor and outdoor calls and test supported Wi‑Fi Calling.
  3. If it appears while travelling or when EXT is displayed, record the transition and call back after the phone settles on the new network area.
  4. If it happens in several locations, have the carrier check the line, SIM or eSIM, device settings and exact model.
  5. If the carrier confirms that 3G retirement or missing VoLTE is the cause, choose a verified compatible phone; otherwise, keep troubleshooting the local coverage or handset fault.

The Bottom Line

Find the pattern first: location, indoor conditions, movement, outage status and the displayed network. Then use the least disruptive fix—restart, supported Wi‑Fi Calling or a carrier diagnostic—before resetting settings or replacing a phone. Verify exact VoLTE compatibility with your Canadian carrier before spending money.
