First decide whether anyone is in immediate danger. Try the local emergency number, but understand that a phone can transmit only when it reaches some usable connection. If an iPhone shows SOS, an emergency call through another carrier may work in Australia, Canada, or the United States. If no call connects, use another person’s phone, a staffed location, or a landline immediately. If the situation is safe, move to a better location, reset the radios, check the SIM or eSIM and account, and use trusted Wi‑Fi if calling or messaging is supported.

1. Handle an emergency before troubleshooting

Do not spend several minutes changing settings when someone needs urgent help. Try the emergency number used where you are. A phone with no active service plan may still reach 911 in the United States if it can reach a terrestrial network, but the call center may not receive your location and may be unable to call back if the call drops (National 911 Program, 911.gov, FAQ last updated March 8, 2023).

On an iPhone, SOS or SOS only means the phone is disconnected from its own carrier but may be able to place an emergency call over another carrier in Australia, Canada, and the United States. It is not a guarantee that a call will connect. No Service or Searching means the phone is not currently connected to a cellular network (Apple Support, published June 23, 2026).

  1. Try the local emergency number once from your phone. If it connects, state your location first, then describe the emergency and stay on the line.
  2. If the call fails, ask someone nearby to call from their phone. A different carrier, a landline, or a phone in a staffed building may have a route that yours does not.
  3. Go to a staffed location such as a hotel desk, transport office, store, hospital, police or fire station, or park facility if you can do so safely.
  4. Follow local emergency procedures rather than assuming that a text message or an SOS shortcut will be delivered.

In the United States, 911.gov says a voice call is preferred and text-to-911 should be used only when calling is not possible. Text-to-911 is not available in every community. A failed text does not prove that a voice call would fail, and a successful text service in one county may not work in the next.

2. Read the status message correctly

Phone status What it indicates What to do
SOS or SOS only (iPhone) The phone is off its own carrier but may see another carrier for emergency calling in Australia, Canada, or the United States. Try the emergency call if needed. For ordinary service, continue with the connection checks below.
No Service (iPhone) No cellular network connection is established. Move to a clearer location, reset Airplane Mode, restart, and check the line, SIM/eSIM, account, and outage status.
Searching (iPhone) The phone is attempting to find a cellular network but has not connected. Give the phone a short opportunity after moving or restarting; then investigate coverage, roaming, SIM/eSIM, or an outage.
No bars or emergency-only indicator (Android) The wording and icon vary by manufacturer and Android version; the phone may have no registered network. Open the SIM and network settings, check Wi‑Fi calling support, and contact the carrier if the condition persists.
Wi‑Fi icon present Internet access may be available even though cellular service is not. Test a webpage, then use Wi‑Fi calling or an internet messaging service if your carrier, device, and account support it.

Satellite service being unavailable removes only that particular path. It does not mean every terrestrial option is gone, but it also does not create a connection by itself. A phone cannot send a call, text, or location update without a reachable cellular, Wi‑Fi, or other communication network.

3. Try to recover a cellular connection

Move away from obstructions

If it is safe, walk to an open area or outdoors, away from thick walls, underground spaces, metal structures, valleys, and dense foliage. A small change in position can expose the phone to a nearby cell site. Do not enter a dangerous area, roadway, restricted site, or unstable terrain merely to gain a bar of signal.

Reset the radio connection

On an iPhone, open Control Center or Settings, turn Airplane Mode on, leave it on for at least 15 seconds, and turn it off. Wait for the phone to search again, then restart it. This sequence can prompt a fresh registration only when a usable network is actually present; it cannot manufacture coverage (Apple Support).

Android menu names differ by manufacturer and version, but the equivalent Airplane Mode toggle and restart are generally available from Quick Settings and the power menu. If you need to receive calls or messages, make sure Airplane Mode is off after the reset.

Check the active line and SIM or eSIM

Open the cellular or SIM settings and confirm that the intended line is enabled. A physical SIM should be seated correctly; an eSIM must remain installed and active. If you recently changed phones, replaced a SIM, traveled internationally, or use dual SIMs, verify which line is assigned to calls and data. Do not remove a SIM during an emergency unless you can do so safely and know how to restore it.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Rule out account, coverage, and device problems

From another connection, contact the carrier or check its outage page. Ask the carrier to verify all of the following:

  • Your account and line are active and paid as required.
  • The area is covered and there is no local outage or maintenance event.
  • The device and SIM are not blocked, suspended, or reported lost.
  • Roaming is enabled and supported if you are outside your home country.
  • The carrier supports your phone model and its software version.

Install any available operating-system and carrier-settings updates when you regain Wi‑Fi or cellular data. If the carrier rules out account and network causes, persistent failure may indicate a damaged antenna, SIM reader, or other hardware fault; arrange device service rather than repeatedly resetting the phone.

4. Use Wi‑Fi when cellular service is absent

Confirm that Wi‑Fi really has internet access

Connect to a trusted network and open a webpage or another service that requires the internet. A Wi‑Fi symbol can indicate association with a router even when that router has no upstream internet. Avoid entering sensitive information on an unknown public network, and do not delay emergency help while searching for Wi‑Fi.

Wi‑Fi calling

Wi‑Fi calling routes ordinary calls and texts through a Wi‑Fi internet connection, but the carrier, phone model, account, software, and country all matter. Some carriers permit Wi‑Fi calling even when the phone has no cellular registration; others require cellular service for activation or emergency handling. Enable it before an outage and ask the carrier how emergency location is registered.

On many Android phones, the setting is under Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → your carrier SIM → Wi‑Fi calling. Manufacturers may rename or relocate the option, and Google notes that the option may be absent when the carrier does not support it. iPhone labels and paths vary by iOS version and carrier; search Settings for “Wi‑Fi Calling” and follow the carrier’s activation prompts.

Emergency calls over Wi‑Fi may depend on a registered emergency address or other location information. Update that address after moving. A Wi‑Fi connection does not guarantee that an emergency center can identify your location, so tell the dispatcher exactly where you are.

Internet messaging

Messaging applications, email, and web-based services can work over Wi‑Fi without cellular service. Both people need a working internet connection and, where applicable, an account or app that supports the conversation. These services are not a universal substitute for emergency calling: delivery can be delayed, the recipient may not see the message, and emergency centers may not accept messages through consumer apps.

5. Understand United States 911 limitations

The following rules are specific to the United States. A wireless phone without an active service plan may call 911 if it can reach a terrestrial network. Because the phone is not tied to an active account, the call center may not receive reliable location information and may not be able to call back if the connection breaks. Tell the dispatcher your address, landmarks, floor, unit, or GPS coordinates verbally whenever possible.

Text-to-911 availability differs by public-safety answering point. If a text fails, 911.gov advises trying a voice call. A phone that cannot reach any cellular network cannot deliver either a voice call or text merely because 911 is dialed.

6. Android Emergency SOS and location sharing are conditional

Android’s Emergency SOS shortcuts, emergency-contact sharing, and Emergency Location Service are dependent on the device, Android version, carrier, country, and network. Google states that real-time sharing with emergency contacts requires Wi‑Fi or mobile-network internet. Pressing an SOS shortcut therefore does not prove that a message or location was transmitted when the phone has no data connection.

Configure emergency contacts and review the feature’s confirmation screens before travel. During an incident, use a direct voice call or another person’s phone when available, and communicate your location aloud rather than relying on an on-screen confirmation.

7. If the phone still cannot connect, change the communication path

When resets and Wi‑Fi do not work, stop treating the handset as the only option. Use the first safe alternative available:

  • Borrow another person’s phone and explain that your phone has no network connection.
  • Ask a staffed business, reception desk, transport hub, medical facility, or public-safety site to place the call.
  • Use a fixed landline, including one at a hotel, office, residence, or public facility.
  • Reach local responders in person if someone is in danger and no phone path works.
  • If you are traveling with others, separate only when it is safe and agree on a meeting point and time.

Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to arrive. If you must move to find help, leave a clear destination rather than relying on a location pin that may never upload.

8. Preserve battery while you work

Emergency troubleshooting can drain a phone while it repeatedly searches for a tower. Lower screen brightness, close apps using location or streaming, disable unnecessary radios and background updates, and use battery saver. Turn Airplane Mode on only when you deliberately want to stop radio searches; while it remains on, cellular calls and messages cannot arrive.

A portable power bank can extend runtime for offline maps, saved contacts, instructions, and occasional reconnection attempts. It is a battery-management accessory, not a signal booster and not a replacement for a network. FCC/FEMA emergency guidance (September 2011) supports conserving battery during emergencies; the power-bank use described here is a practical preparation based on that advice.

9. Prepare before travel or an outage

Save information offline

  • Store important contacts and the destination’s emergency number in the phone and on paper.
  • Download maps, tickets, medical information, and directions that you may need without data.
  • Keep a printed contact list in a wallet, bag, or vehicle.

Set up and test Wi‑Fi calling

Ask your carrier whether your exact phone and account support Wi‑Fi calling without cellular service. Activate it while you have coverage, place a test call, and confirm the emergency address or location registered with the carrier. Recheck the address after moving.

Agree on a check-in plan

With family or travel companions, choose a meeting point, a check-in time, and a person who will relay information. Include a backup communication method and identify staffed places along your route.

Maintain power

Start trips with the phone charged, carry a compatible cable, and consider a charged power bank. Keep the phone accessible rather than buried in luggage so emergency information and offline contacts remain available even when all networks are down.

10. A quick decision path

  1. Danger now? Try the local emergency number, then immediately seek another person’s phone, a staffed location, or a landline if it fails.
  2. Safe to troubleshoot? Move to an open location, toggle Airplane Mode for at least 15 seconds on iPhone, turn it off, and restart.
  3. Still no cellular service? Check the active SIM/eSIM line, account status, outage reports, roaming, and updates.
  4. Wi‑Fi available? Verify internet access, then use supported Wi‑Fi calling or internet messaging while stating your location directly.
  5. No usable connection? Preserve battery and switch to an in-person or landline communication path.

The decisive question is not how many bars the screen shows; it is whether any usable network or nearby person can carry your message. Satellite unavailability narrows the choices, but safe movement, another carrier, Wi‑Fi, a staffed location, and a prepared offline plan can still provide a route to help.
