If your Kindle won’t charge, first test the outlet, reseat the cable and adapter, then try the supplied cable or another cable compatible with your Kindle’s port. Identify your Kindle’s generation before buying a replacement: charging hardware varies by model, and USB-C does not fit every Kindle. If the screen is frozen, Amazon recommends holding the power button for 40 seconds to restart the device. Don’t open the Kindle or attempt battery repair; stop and contact Amazon support or an authorized provider if the device or battery may be damaged.
Start with the power source and connections
A Kindle that appears not to charge may have a problem with the outlet, adapter, cable, connection, device, or—on a supported model—the wireless charging setup. Check the simple, reversible causes first. Amazon’s general power troubleshooting guidance recommends verifying the outlet and ensuring the adapter and cable connections are secure. That guidance is not a Kindle-specific diagnostic flow, but these checks are useful before treating the e-reader as faulty.
- Test the outlet. Plug another device into the same outlet, or move the Kindle’s charger to an outlet known to work. If the other device also fails, try a different outlet rather than concluding the Kindle is the problem.
- Reseat the connections. Unplug the cable from the Kindle and the wall adapter, then reconnect both ends firmly. If you are charging from a USB port rather than a wall adapter, reseat the cable at that end too.
- Inspect the setup without forcing it. Check that the cable is fully inserted and that the adapter is connected to power. Don’t force a plug that does not fit; the port and cable must match the Kindle’s model.
If the outlet and connections check out but the Kindle still shows no sign of charging, change one part of the setup at a time. That makes it easier to tell whether the cable, adapter, or device is associated with the problem.
Try a compatible cable before replacing the Kindle
A cable can be the cause even when it looks intact. Amazon recommends using a compatible USB cable, preferably the one supplied with the Kindle. If you no longer have that cable, choose one that matches the physical charging port on your exact model. A cable that fits one Kindle generation may not fit another.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Disconnect the cable currently in use.
- Connect the Kindle with its supplied cable, if available.
- If that is not available, try a known-compatible cable that matches the Kindle’s port.
- Reconnect the cable securely at both ends and check whether the Kindle now indicates charging.
Don’t assume that a USB-C cable is right just because it is common on newer devices. Amazon’s current setup guidance identifies USB-C charging for the Kindle 11th Generation and Paperwhite models covered by that guidance; older or different models need their own compatibility check. Identify the model and generation before purchasing a cable.
When comparing replacement cables, use the Kindle’s generation and physical port as your starting point. Check that the cable is described as compatible with that model, and consider whether it addresses the issue you isolated: if the outlet works and the supplied cable is unavailable or suspect, a compatible replacement USB cable is the most direct option. Avoid choosing based only on a familiar connector or a general “Kindle cable” label.
Check the wall adapter separately
If a different outlet and a compatible cable do not help, the adapter may be the part to investigate. Check the adapter requirements for the exact Kindle model rather than choosing one based only on the connector. Amazon’s current Kindle and Paperwhite setup pages identify an Amazon 5W adapter, sold separately, for wall charging. That guidance should not be treated as a universal specification for every Kindle generation.
Where possible, test with a compatible adapter rather than buying one immediately. If you do need a replacement, confirm that it is suitable for the model in question. A replacement adapter is a reasonable next step only after checking the outlet and cable; changing it will not solve a problem caused by a damaged device or a cable that does not match the port.
Compare a possible adapter with the exact model’s setup information and with the symptom you have isolated. If a known-compatible cable works with another suitable power source, the adapter becomes a more plausible part to check. If nothing changes after testing a compatible cable and adapter, further accessory purchases may not help; seek model-specific advice instead. The 5W Amazon adapter is a relevant option for the current Kindle and Paperwhite models whose setup pages specify it, not a blanket recommendation for every generation.

Check whether your Kindle supports wireless charging
Wireless charging is not available on every Kindle. Amazon lists the Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition and Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition as compatible in its wireless-charging troubleshooting guidance. If you have another model, don’t assume that placing it on a Qi pad will charge it; use a wired connection unless the model’s official setup information confirms wireless support.
For a supported Signature Edition
- Confirm that the Kindle is one of the compatible Signature Edition models.
- Use a compatible Qi-certified charger and make sure the charging pad itself has power.
- Center the Kindle on the pad so it is positioned for charging.
- Remove a cover if it may be blocking the charging connection.
- If the Kindle remains unresponsive, restart it using the 40-second power-button procedure below.
These checks isolate the wireless setup: a powered pad and correct placement matter, and a cover can interfere. If the model is not one Amazon lists as compatible, troubleshoot its wired charging setup instead.

A wireless pad is therefore not a general substitute for a cable. Consider a Qi-certified charger only after confirming the model is one of the two compatible Signature Editions and after checking that the pad is powered and the Kindle is centered. If wireless charging still fails, try the restart check and consult Amazon for the model rather than assuming every Kindle can use the same charging method.
Restart a Kindle with a frozen or unresponsive screen
A Kindle can appear not to charge when its screen or software is frozen. A restart is a low-risk check for that intermittent or unresponsive state, but it does not prove that the battery or charging hardware is healthy.
- Press and hold the Kindle’s power button.
- Continue holding it for 40 seconds, then release it.
- Wait a few seconds for the device to reboot.
Amazon’s restart guidance specifies: “Continue holding the power button for 40 seconds, then release.” If the Kindle restarts, reconnect it to a verified power source with a compatible cable and check the screen for a charging indication. If it remains frozen or still does not charge, move on to model-specific support rather than repeatedly changing unrelated accessories.

This step is particularly relevant when the Kindle won’t charge or turn on and the screen appears stuck. It is a restart, not a battery repair or a confirmation that the device has recovered. If there is evidence of a drop, liquid exposure, or other damage, do not keep trying combinations of accessories; stop and contact support.

How to tell whether the Kindle is charging
Check the Kindle’s on-screen battery or charging indication when the display is responsive. The exact appearance can vary by model and by whether the device is asleep or unresponsive, so don’t rely on a symbol description that may not match your generation. If the screen is frozen, the absence of a visible change does not by itself establish that the charging hardware has failed; try the restart procedure and verify the cable, outlet, and adapter.
When the Kindle is on, use the display’s charging indication together with the connection checks: ensure the cable is seated, the outlet works, and the charging method is supported by your model. The official guidance cited here does not establish a guaranteed charge time, so avoid diagnosing the device by an assumed number of minutes or expecting a particular time-to-full-charge.
Choose a replacement by model, not by guesswork
Before shopping, find the Kindle’s model and generation in its device information or purchase records, then confirm the charging port and supported method in Amazon’s setup information. The official guide index covers multiple models and generations; a general “Kindle charger” description is not enough to confirm compatibility.
| What you need to check | What the guidance establishes | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Kindle 11th Generation and Paperwhite models covered by current setup guidance | Amazon identifies USB-C charging for these models and a 5W Amazon wall adapter, sold separately, for wall charging. | Confirm that your particular model is covered, then choose a compatible USB-C cable or adapter. |
| Older or otherwise unspecified Kindle models | The guidance does not establish one connector or adapter requirement for every generation. | Identify the model and verify its port and charging requirements before buying. |
| Paperwhite Signature Edition or Colorsoft Signature Edition | Amazon lists these as compatible with wireless charging. | A compatible Qi-certified charger may be used; check that it has power, center the Kindle, and remove a potentially obstructive cover. |
| Other Kindle models and wireless charging | Wireless support is not established for all Kindle models. | Use wired charging unless official model information confirms wireless compatibility. |
A compatible replacement USB cable is the most direct purchase to consider after checking the outlet and reseating the connections. A 5W adapter is a secondary possibility if the adapter is suspect and the exact model’s guidance supports it. A Qi-certified pad is relevant only to the compatible Signature Edition models listed above. Don’t buy a battery or disassembly kit as a charging fix.

Amazon’s safety wording for Kindle (10th Generation) says to use the cable included with the device or another cable approved for that Kindle, with a compatible charger or USB port meeting USB-IF Battery Charging Specification, Revision 1.2. This is specific to that generation and should not be treated as the sole current specification for every Kindle. For any model, verify its own official setup guidance before deciding whether a USB-C cable, wall adapter, or wireless pad is the right purchase.

Stop charging and contact Amazon support or an authorized provider if the Kindle or battery may be damaged, particularly after a drop or liquid exposure. Don’t open the device, attempt a battery replacement, or continue testing a device that appears damaged. Amazon’s safety guidance directs users away from battery repair; its wording for Kindle (10th Generation) says to use the included or another approved cable with a compatible charger or USB port meeting USB-IF Battery Charging Specification, Revision 1.2. That is generation-specific guidance, not a specification to apply automatically to every Kindle.
If the device is not visibly damaged but continues to fail after you verify the outlet, connections, model-compatible cable and adapter, supported charging method, and—if needed—a restart, contact Amazon support for model-specific next steps. The reviewed Amazon pages do not establish a universal repair price, warranty outcome, or eligibility decision, so support must assess the individual device.
