When home internet stops working, first determine whether the failure affects one device or the whole connection, then check the provider’s outage information before repeatedly changing equipment. Confirm power and cables, follow the restart procedure for your exact modem, router or fiber box, test again, and report an unlisted fault with a clear timeline. The sequence below helps you separate a provider outage from a Wi‑Fi or device problem without erasing your settings.

These steps apply broadly to cable, DSL, fiber and fixed-wireless services, but provider instructions and complaint routes depend on your country and equipment. The examples from AT&T and Spectrum are not interchangeable instructions for every model.

1. Establish the scope before touching settings

Start with the simplest diagnostic question: is the problem on one device or on several?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If only one device is offline

Try a second phone, computer or streaming device on the same home network. If other devices work, concentrate on the affected device’s Wi‑Fi selection, airplane mode, Ethernet cable, network settings or software. Do not factory-reset the router for a single-device failure; that can create a new problem while leaving the original device issue unresolved.

If several devices fail together

A simultaneous failure suggests a shared connection, modem, router, fiber network terminal or provider-side issue. It is a diagnostic heuristic, not proof: a local power interruption or a failed router can look exactly like an ISP outage. Test at least one device over Wi‑Fi and, if available, one by Ethernet so you know whether the fault is only wireless.

Record what still works

Note whether local devices can see the Wi‑Fi network, whether wired devices behave differently, and whether only certain services fail. “Wi‑Fi connected” means the device can reach the router; it does not prove that the router can reach the internet. Do not infer a universal meaning from a particular modem light, because indicator behavior varies by model and provider.

2. Check the provider’s outage status first

Open the provider’s service-status page or app using mobile data, or call the support number. A declared local outage is the fastest authoritative explanation and may provide an estimated restoration time or update channel. Check the service address shown in the account, since a status page can display a different location.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An empty status page is not a clean bill of health. Emerging faults can precede a notice, and the provider may not yet know about a line problem. Ofcom’s consumer guidance specifically advises reporting a fault even when no outage is listed: Get help with broadband and Wi-Fi problems (updated August 25, 2026).

Take a screenshot or write down the page’s wording and the time you checked it. That record prevents you from having to reconstruct the sequence during a support call.

3. Check power, connections and the fiber termination

Power path

Verify that the modem, router, mesh nodes, boosters and, for fiber service, the optical network terminal (ONT) have power. Check the wall outlet, power strip and each device’s power adapter. If the home has just experienced a blackout or surge, do not assume the internet equipment restarted correctly when other lights came back on.

Cables and ports

Push coaxial, Ethernet and fiber-related connectors firmly into their intended ports without forcing them. Look for a cable that was pulled loose when furniture moved or when a mesh unit was relocated. If your provider supplies a separate modem and router, confirm that the Ethernet cable runs from the modem’s internet/LAN port to the router’s WAN/internet port. A loose cable can imitate a network outage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fiber-specific caution

The ONT is part of the provider’s access equipment. Do not open a fiber connector, bend the fiber sharply or improvise a reset sequence. Spectrum’s outage guidance tells customers to check outage information and not manually troubleshoot fiber equipment; use the instructions for your exact installation instead: Outage information and troubleshooting.

4. Restart equipment using the correct procedure

A restart removes temporary faults while preserving configuration. A factory reset is different: it can erase Wi‑Fi names, passwords and provider settings. Never press a reset pin as a routine first step unless support explicitly directs you and you have a way to restore the configuration.

Follow the provider’s sequence

Use the support article for the exact model and technology. Do not combine a cable-modem sequence with a fiber-ONT sequence or assume that a mesh system should be powered in the same order as a single gateway.

Example: AT&T gateway restart

AT&T’s current outage article instructs customers to unplug the gateway’s power, wait 20 seconds, reconnect it and allow up to five minutes for service to return: Check for Outages in Your Area (updated October 7, 2026). Restarting the gateway interrupts internet-dependent phone and television services as well as data, so warn anyone using those services first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate modem and router

When the provider documents a sequence for separate devices, follow that sequence exactly, including which unit is powered first and how long synchronization may take. Keep the equipment connected while it negotiates service; repeatedly unplugging it can make diagnosis harder and may reset a recovery process.

What not to do

  • Do not factory-reset the gateway because an outage page is unavailable.
  • Do not swap in a random power adapter; voltage and polarity must match the equipment specification.
  • Do not disconnect or handle a fiber connector to “clean” it.
  • Do not repeatedly reboot during a declared provider outage unless support asks you to.

5. Test the connection after it returns

Wait for the provider’s stated startup interval, then test more than one device. Open several unrelated websites and, if relevant, try the service that originally failed. A single website can be down independently of your ISP.

Test both Wi‑Fi and Ethernet when possible. If Ethernet works but Wi‑Fi does not, the provider connection may be healthy and the remaining fault may involve wireless coverage, interference or a mesh node. If every device remains offline after the documented restart, stop changing settings and contact support with your recorded results.

For intermittent service, keep a log rather than relying on memory. Record each interruption’s start time, end time, affected devices and services, and whether a restart changed anything. Ofcom recommends keeping interruption times and durations when possible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Report an unlisted or continuing fault

Contact the provider even when its status page says “no outage.” Give the agent a concise timeline:

  • the exact time the problem began and whether it is constant or intermittent;
  • the service address and account or circuit identifier requested by the provider;
  • how many devices and connection types are affected;
  • the outage-page result and the time you checked it;
  • power, cable and restart checks already completed;
  • any error messages, observed link changes or loss of phone/television service.

Ask four practical questions: Is there a known fault or maintenance event? What restoration estimate is currently available? How will updates arrive, and how often? Could a technician visit, replacement device or other proposed action carry a charge? Save the case number, chat transcript, outage alert and every estimate; estimates can change, but the record establishes when you reported the fault.

Tell support about consequences and vulnerability

Say explicitly if the interruption stops work, study, essential online tasks, a healthcare device, an alarm, or communications for a vulnerable household member. Ofcom says providers may offer priority repair depending on the provider and circumstances. Its UK guidance also states that the provider remains responsible for fixing a fault even when another company owns the underlying network; that statement is UK regulatory guidance, not a universal rule for US contracts.

7. Stay connected while the line is being repaired

Phone or portable hotspot

A hotspot shares a mobile-data connection with one or more devices. It is useful only when the mobile network works at the affected location, your plan permits tethering, you have enough data allowance, and the phone or hotspot has battery and compatible Wi‑Fi. The Federal Register describes hotspot functionality as a way to connect multiple household devices (Vol. 81, No. 100, May 24, 2016, p. 33075); that historical publication does not establish current prices, speeds or availability for any particular product.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reduce the load if data is limited: pause cloud backups and large downloads, avoid high-resolution video, and connect only essential devices. A hotspot is a separate connection, not a repair to the fixed line. Mobile networks can also be congested or disrupted by the same regional event.

Home backup services

Some providers sell a secondary cellular connection for use when a primary broadband line fails. For example, the provider description of T-Mobile Home Internet Backup says its gateway needs backup power to remain connected during a power outage; eligibility, coverage and current terms must be checked for the specific address: T-Mobile 5G Home Internet FAQ. Do not assume a backup service will work during every regional incident.

Compare before buying backup internet

Evaluate a backup by the conditions that matter at your home rather than by headline speed:

Question Why it matters
Does the cellular network cover the exact address indoors? Coverage maps are estimates; building materials and local congestion affect real use.
What are the device and recurring service costs? A one-time hotspot purchase and a monthly backup line have different budgets.
Are there data caps, throttling or a separate hotspot allowance? Video calls and large files can consume an allowance quickly.
How many devices and what workload must it support? Email needs less capacity than simultaneous video meetings or uploads.
How long will the battery last, and how will it charge? The backup is not useful if the phone, hotspot or router loses power.
Can it operate when the home router or local power is down? Some gateways require mains power; plan for a charged battery or approved backup supply.

8. Account for power cuts and emergency communications

A broadband failure or power cut can also disable internet-dependent voice, alarms and telecare equipment. UK government resilience guidance advises people who rely on landline or telecare services to check their provider’s backup arrangements: Communication providers: ensuring telecom services are resilient.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Emergency calling depends on your service, equipment, power and jurisdiction. A home internet connection is not a guaranteed emergency path. For urgent danger, use a functioning mobile or landline phone, or another local emergency communication method. Tell the provider if a power-related outage leaves someone without a required medical, alarm or telecare connection so it can record the risk and explain available alternatives.

9. Escalate when the provider does not resolve the fault

United States: FCC informal complaint

The Federal Communications Commission accepts internet complaints covering availability, speed, equipment and billing. The categories are listed in its Internet Form – Descriptions of Complaint Issues.

Use the provider’s case number, dates, outage evidence and requested remedy when filing. The FCC explains that it may provide educational information or serve the complaint on the provider. A provider that receives a served service complaint must respond in writing within 30 days. Read the process details in Filing a Complaint Questions and Answers and How the FCC Handles Your Complaint.

This is an informal complaint channel, not an instant repair dispatch, guaranteed compensation route or substitute for legal advice. The FCC says not every complaint is served on a provider and that it cannot act as your personal lawyer, court or legal advisor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

United Kingdom and other countries

In the UK, start with the provider’s complaints process and use Ofcom’s consumer guidance for broadband and Wi‑Fi faults. Ofcom is a regulator and its advice is written for UK services; it does not set the complaint procedure for US customers. In another country, use the national communications regulator and any required alternative-dispute or consumer process, keeping the same outage log and case records.

10. Use this decision table while troubleshooting

Observation Most useful next action What it does not prove
One device fails; others browse normally Check that device’s Wi‑Fi, cable and network settings, then test it on another network. It does not prove the provider is healthy everywhere.
Several devices fail and the provider lists an outage Report any safety or vulnerability impact, note the restoration estimate and wait for updates. The estimate is not a guarantee.
Several devices fail; no outage is listed Check power and cables, perform the documented restart once, then report the fault. A blank status page does not rule out an emerging provider fault.
Ethernet works but Wi‑Fi fails Investigate the router’s wireless or mesh configuration and coverage. It does not establish that every provider service is fault-free.
Service returns after reboot but drops repeatedly Keep an interruption log and ask support to investigate an intermittent line or equipment fault. A temporary recovery does not identify the root cause.
Internet and power fail together Use a charged mobile phone or other independent method, and ask about backup power for dependent services. A mobile network may also be affected by the event.

11. Keep an outage record that support can use

Create one note for the incident and update it rather than opening multiple disconnected chats. Include:

  • date and time the problem began;
  • constant or intermittent behavior, with interruption durations;
  • affected devices, wired/Wi‑Fi status and services;
  • status-page wording and screenshots;
  • power, cable and restart actions with their times;
  • support case numbers, agent instructions and restoration estimates;
  • any work, study, healthcare, alarm or vulnerability consequence;
  • charges mentioned and whether you accepted or declined them.

This record lets a new agent see what has already been tested and gives a regulator or consumer service a chronological account if escalation becomes necessary.

12. Avoid the common mistakes that prolong an outage

  • Resetting before checking scope: a single-device problem rarely requires a gateway reset.
  • Treating status pages as infallible: report unlisted faults because emerging incidents may not be posted.
  • Using another provider’s instructions: restart timing and fiber handling differ by equipment.
  • Factory-resetting in frustration: preserve configuration unless support directs a reset and can help restore service.
  • Assuming Wi‑Fi equals internet: the wireless link to the router can remain up while the provider connection is down.
  • Accepting a possible charge without asking: clarify whether a visit, replacement or other action is billable before agreeing.
  • Relying on one backup path: a hotspot needs mobile coverage, data allowance and power, and may fail during a wider incident.

Bottom line

Work from the least disruptive check to the most formal remedy: identify how many devices are affected, check the provider’s status, verify power and connections, perform only the documented restart, test again, and report the fault with a timeline. Preserve your settings, prepare an independent connection only if its coverage and power needs fit your household, and escalate through the appropriate regulator when the provider does not resolve the problem.
