First find out whether the failure affects one device or every device. Test another device, note whether Wi‑Fi says it is connected but shows “No Internet,” check power and cables, then restart the modem before the router. If Ethernet also fails on multiple devices, check your provider’s outage information and contact the ISP.
Start with the scope of the failure
The fastest diagnosis is to test a second phone, computer, tablet or streaming device on the same network. This separates a device problem from a network or service problem; it does not prove the cause by itself.
| What you see | Next check | What it makes more likely |
|---|---|---|
| Only one device is offline | Reconnect its Wi‑Fi, check Airplane Mode and test it on another network | A device setting, adapter, driver or software issue |
| Several devices fail over Wi‑Fi | Check equipment and cables, restart the modem and router, then try Ethernet | A router, modem, broadband line or ISP issue |
| Wi‑Fi says connected, but websites and apps fail | Test another device and check whether the router can reach the internet | The local Wi‑Fi link is working while internet access is not |
| Ethernet works but Wi‑Fi does not | Investigate wireless range, interference, router settings and firmware | A Wi‑Fi or router-path problem rather than a complete service outage |
Read what the connection status actually means
“Connected to Wi‑Fi” only confirms that a device can communicate with the nearby wireless router. It does not guarantee that the router can reach your ISP or that internet services are responding. Windows labels the latter condition “No Internet”; Apple devices may show “No Internet Connection.” In this state, local devices can still appear connected while browsers, messages and online apps fail.

Before changing settings, note the exact wording and whether the status changes between connected, disconnected and no internet. That observation helps you and an ISP support agent distinguish a wireless link failure from an upstream service failure.

Run the basic physical checks
Confirm power
Look at the modem, router and any separate broadband equipment. Make sure each unit is switched on and its power cable is firmly inserted. For full-fibre service, include the fibre connection box, commonly called an optical network terminal (ONT), in this check. A dark or unexpectedly unlit unit can point to a power problem rather than a Wi‑Fi setting.
Reseat the connections
Check that the broadband cable from the wall, ONT or other service equipment is fully seated in the modem or router. Check Ethernet cables between separate modem and router units as well. If you have another known-good Ethernet cable, trying it can rule out a damaged lead; reuse one you already own before buying anything.
Indicator lights differ by manufacturer and service type, so do not treat one color as a universal diagnosis. Record which lights are on, off or blinking and tell the ISP exactly what you observed.

Restart the modem and router in the right order
A restart clears a temporary state in the equipment. It will disconnect every device on the network while the hardware starts again.
- Unplug the modem and router. If your setup combines both functions in one box, unplug that single unit.
- Wait at least 30 seconds with the equipment powered off.
- Reconnect the modem first. Leave it alone while its startup sequence and status lights settle.
- Reconnect the separate router after the modem is ready, then wait for the router to finish starting before reconnecting devices.
- Open a website or app and test more than one device.
Do not repeatedly pull the plug during startup; each interruption restarts the waiting period. If service returns only briefly and drops again, continue with the wired and scope tests rather than cycling the equipment indefinitely.
Use Ethernet to separate Wi‑Fi from the service
If Wi‑Fi is unavailable, connect a computer directly to the router with an Ethernet cable. In some installations the appropriate connection may be to the modem, but follow the layout of your service and do not bypass equipment that your provider requires. If the computer has no Ethernet port, a USB-to-Ethernet adapter is an option for performing this diagnostic test.

- Ethernet works while Wi‑Fi fails: Internet service is reaching the router, so concentrate on wireless settings, range, interference, firmware or the router’s radio.
- Ethernet fails too: The modem, ONT, broadband line or ISP becomes more plausible, especially when multiple devices are affected.
- Ethernet is unavailable: You can still check another device and the provider’s outage channel, but the diagnosis will be less specific.
A successful wired test narrows the fault; it does not identify a single failed component with certainty. For example, the router can still have a wireless hardware or configuration fault even though its wired switch continues to work.
If only one device is affected
Windows
- Open the Wi‑Fi controls and verify that Airplane Mode is off.
- Disconnect from the saved network, select it again, and enter its password if Windows asks.
- Run the built-in network troubleshooter from Windows network settings.
- If drops continue only on this computer, check the wireless adapter in Device Manager for a driver issue. Review the adapter’s power-management setting if the connection disappears after sleep or under light use.
- Test the computer on another Wi‑Fi network. If it fails there too, the computer or adapter is more suspect than your home service.
Driver and power changes are most useful when other devices stay online or when the same computer drops on multiple networks. Avoid changing router settings while the evidence points to one computer.
iPhone or iPad
First test another device on the same Wi‑Fi and test the iPhone or iPad on a different network. Rejoin the known network and confirm that Airplane Mode is off. Use a network-settings reset only after those simpler checks fail: Apple’s reset removes saved Wi‑Fi networks and passwords and also clears VPN and APN settings, so you will need to recreate those connections.

If every device is offline
Check for a provider outage
After checking power, cables and the restart sequence, look at your ISP’s outage or service-status channel for your address or area. Outage information is location- and time-dependent, so a result from another region may not apply.
Contact the ISP when the evidence points upstream
Contact support if multiple devices remain offline, the Ethernet test also fails, or the restart does not restore service. Tell the agent:

- How many devices are affected and which types they are
- Whether any device worked over Ethernet
- Whether Wi‑Fi reported “No Internet” or disconnected completely
- What the modem, ONT and router lights were doing
- When the failure began and whether it is continuous or intermittent
- That you restarted the modem first and then the router
Ask the ISP to check for a local outage, a line fault or a problem reaching your premises. This information lets support begin with service-side checks instead of repeating device settings that you have already tested.

When Wi‑Fi keeps dropping but service returns
Determine whether location matters
Test the same device close to the router and then in the room where drops normally occur. If the connection is stable nearby but unreliable farther away, range or interference is more likely than an ISP outage. Other wireless equipment, thick walls and competing networks can affect reliability.
Check the router path
Look for available router firmware updates and review the manufacturer’s support guidance for wireless settings. If Ethernet remains stable while Wi‑Fi repeatedly fails, focus on the router’s wireless function rather than replacing the modem or changing ISP credentials.
Check the affected device
If only one computer repeatedly drops while phones and other computers remain stable, revisit its adapter driver and power settings. A USB wireless adapter can be a practical test, but it should be used to isolate the device fault, not as a substitute for checking the service.

- Do not reset network settings immediately. On Apple devices, the reset deletes saved networks and VPN/APN information; use it only after reconnection and cross-device tests.
- Do not assume a connected Wi‑Fi icon means the ISP is healthy. Local router access and internet access are separate links.
- Do not replace the router based on one unexplained drop. A wired test, another device and outage check provide stronger evidence before spending money.
- Do not keep rebooting without observing the result. Note whether the modem recovers, whether only Wi‑Fi returns, and how long service lasts.
- Do not buy an Ethernet adapter expecting it to repair an outage. It only makes a wired diagnostic test possible on a computer without an Ethernet port.
A compact decision path
- Test another device on the same network.
- Read the status: fully disconnected, or Wi‑Fi connected with “No Internet”?
- Check power, broadband equipment, ONT (if used) and cable seating.
- Restart modem first, wait for it to settle, then restart the router.
- Try Ethernet if available.
- If one device still fails, work through its Wi‑Fi, Airplane Mode, troubleshooter and adapter checks.
- If several devices still fail, check the ISP’s outage channel and call support with your test results.
This sequence keeps disruptive changes until the evidence justifies them and gives you a clear stopping point: once multiple devices fail by both Wi‑Fi and Ethernet after a proper restart, the ISP or physical broadband path needs investigation.
