A caller name is usually supplied by the receiving carrier, not permanently stored on the caller’s phone. The carrier looks up the incoming number in a Calling Name (CNAM) database, while a saved contact on your phone can replace that network result. Different carriers may return different names, and callers can intentionally hide their identity.

Start by checking the recipient’s contact record, then determine whether the problem affects one caller or everyone. That distinction shows whether to correct a phone contact, the caller’s account, or the receiving carrier’s lookup data.

How incoming caller names are produced

When a call arrives, the receiving network uses the calling number to request a name from one or more Calling Name (CNAM) databases. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) describes the process this way: “The providers of caller ID services identify the name of the subscriber associated with the calling party by sending a query to a centralized calling name (‘CNAM’) database or directory that associates telephone numbers with names.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That lookup is separate from the address book on your handset. If the number is saved in your contacts, the phone may show your saved label instead of the carrier’s result. If the number is not saved, the phone generally displays whatever name the receiving network supplies, or a status such as Private, Unknown, or Unavailable when no usable identity is delivered.

There is no single global CNAM record. Carriers can use different databases, apply different formatting rules, and refresh their records at different times. A name that is correct for one recipient can therefore be outdated or formatted differently for another, especially across carrier networks.

First determine what kind of problem you have

Use the pattern of the error before changing settings. The scope usually identifies which side of the call controls the fix.

What you see Most likely cause Who can correct it Best first action
One caller has the wrong name on your phone Your contact record or the receiving carrier’s lookup You, then your receiving carrier Check the saved contact, then ask the receiving carrier to investigate
Every caller appears without a name Caller ID is disabled, an app is interfering, or the network is not supplying names You and the receiving carrier Enable Caller ID, remove conflicting apps, restart, and test again
Your name is wrong for people you call Your carrier’s outgoing Caller ID or Share Name ID record Your carrier Request an outgoing name correction
The display says Private or Anonymous The caller blocked identity, often with *67, or the network cannot deliver it The caller or carrier Ask the caller to disable blocking; do not treat it as a spelling error
The display says Unknown or Unavailable Missing, unsupported, or blocked Caller ID data Caller or carrier, depending on the call Test another call and ask the carrier whether the feature is supported
A familiar name appears but the call seems suspicious Caller-ID spoofing No display setting can prove identity Hang up and verify the caller independently

Fix a wrong name shown on your own phone

1. Check the contact record first

  1. Open Contacts or the Phone app and search for the incoming number.
  2. Confirm that the number is saved only once and that the spelling is correct.
  3. Remove duplicate entries, old numbers, and alternate labels that could be selected by the phone.
  4. Save the number in the format your phone normally uses, then place a test call.

T-Mobile specifically recommends adding the contact and checking its spelling. Verizon notes that a saved contact can override the network-provided Share Name ID, so correcting the contact may change the display immediately without any carrier update.

2. Check Caller ID settings and apps if all names are missing

  1. Open your phone’s call settings and verify that Caller ID or caller-identification features are enabled. The exact label varies by handset and operating-system version.
  2. Temporarily disable or uninstall third-party caller-ID, call-blocking, or dialer apps. These apps can replace the phone’s standard display or suppress information.
  3. Restart the phone and install pending operating-system and carrier-service updates.
  4. Ask several people on different networks to call you. Record whether the result is a wrong name, a blank name, Private, Unknown, or Unavailable.
  5. If no caller names appear after these checks, contact the receiving carrier. The carrier must confirm whether caller-name service is active on your line and supported in your network area.

A hardware replacement cannot repair a CNAM record. If the network data is wrong, the relevant carrier has to refresh or correct it.

3. Test whether the issue is local or cross-carrier

Have the same person call you from the same number while you test on another handset or another carrier’s line. If the name is correct on one network but wrong on another, the receiving carrier with the bad result controls that lookup. If every network shows the same wrong name, the caller’s outgoing record is more likely to be the source.

Correct the name people see when you call

Ask your carrier to update outgoing Caller ID

Contact the carrier that bills the calling number and request a correction to the outgoing Caller ID name, sometimes labeled Share Name ID. Give the representative the exact display name you want and confirm that it reflects the legal or account name the carrier permits. A carrier cannot guarantee that every other network will display the same text because each receiving provider may use a different CNAM database.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wait for the record to propagate

Carrier systems do not update simultaneously. T-Mobile’s current troubleshooting guidance says an outgoing-name correction may take up to 72 hours. Verizon’s Share Name ID processing guidance says requests can take up to 24 hours. These are processing windows, not guarantees that every receiving network will refresh at the same moment.

After the stated window, place test calls to more than one carrier. Note the date, time, number called, displayed name, and whether the call was on the same or a different network. That information gives support a useful escalation record if one provider still shows stale data.

When the receiving carrier must investigate

If the caller’s carrier confirms that its outgoing name is correct but you still see an old or wrong name, the receiving provider controls what appears on your line. Verizon states that the receiving provider determines what non-Verizon customers see and may need to be contacted directly. Ask that provider to investigate its CNAM lookup or refresh the record associated with the incoming number.

When you contact support, describe the smallest reproducible case:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • the incoming number, including country or area code;
  • the wrong name or exact status displayed;
  • your carrier and device model;
  • the caller’s carrier, if known;
  • whether the number is saved in Contacts;
  • the date and time of recent test calls; and
  • whether calls from other numbers show names normally.

Ask whether the line supports caller-name service, whether a third-party application is modifying the display, and whether the provider can submit a CNAM correction or escalation. If the provider says the caller supplied no name, the caller—not your handset—must request an outgoing update.

What Private, Anonymous, Unknown, and Unavailable mean

Private or Anonymous

A caller can intentionally block identity. FCC privacy guidance explains that callers can request number and name blocking with *67. AT&T and Verizon describe Private or Anonymous displays when identity information is blocked. In this situation there may be no name to repair; the caller must allow Caller ID on a future call if recognition is needed.

Unknown or Unavailable

These labels can mean that the call delivered no usable Caller ID data, the network does not support the feature for that call, or identity was blocked. Verizon notes that some calls lack supplied Caller ID data and that support varies by carrier and network. Test with several callers before assuming your phone is malfunctioning. If only one caller produces the status, that caller’s line or routing is the likely source. If all callers do, ask your carrier to check Caller ID service on your account.

Do not confuse a wrong name with spoofing

A wrong or familiar name is not proof that the caller is genuine. The Federal Trade Commission warns: “Scammers can use technology to fake the name or number on your caller ID.” Spoofing can make an incoming call appear to come from a bank, a local business, a government office, or someone in your contacts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use this response when a call requests money, passwords, one-time codes, remote access, or urgent action:

  1. End the call rather than arguing with the caller.
  2. Find the organization’s number from a statement, official card, or independently typed website address—not from the incoming display or a callback number the caller gives you.
  3. Call back through that known channel and ask whether the original call was genuine.
  4. Write down the displayed number, displayed name, callback number, date, and what the caller requested.
  5. Report suspected spoofing through the FCC complaint process; the FTC also advises recording the displayed and callback numbers when reporting scam calls.

Blocking unknown calls may reduce interruptions, but it cannot determine whether a displayed identity is authentic.

Same-carrier and cross-carrier differences

Network situation What can differ How to troubleshoot
Caller and recipient use the same carrier The carrier may have a consistent record, but a contact or app can still override it Check the contact and apps, then ask the carrier to refresh the account record
Caller and recipient use different carriers The receiving carrier may query a different CNAM database and show an older or differently formatted name Caller corrects its outgoing name; recipient asks its own carrier to correct the lookup if the error remains
Landline, wireless, business, or forwarded call Some routes may not pass a name or number in the same way Test a direct call and ask both carriers whether Caller ID is supported on that route
Number recently transferred or account recently changed Database records may lag behind the current account Wait through the carrier’s stated processing window, then escalate with test details

Limits you cannot fix in the phone settings

  • Character limits: A carrier may truncate or reject a name longer than its field allows. T-Mobile specifies 15 characters for its Caller ID Name field.
  • Database timing: A corrected carrier record may take up to 24 hours under Verizon’s Share Name ID guidance or up to 72 hours under T-Mobile’s outgoing-name guidance.
  • Carrier coverage: Some networks and call types do not supply caller names, so an Unavailable result can be expected rather than a repairable error.
  • Local overrides: Contacts, spam filters, and third-party dialers can replace the network result even when the CNAM record is correct.
  • Privacy blocking: A caller who uses identity blocking has deliberately withheld the data; changing your contact spelling will not reveal it.

A practical escalation checklist

  1. Write down the exact display: wrong name, blank, Private, Unknown, or Unavailable.
  2. Check whether the number is saved once and spelled correctly.
  3. Disable caller-ID and call-blocking apps temporarily, then restart and update the phone.
  4. Test calls from several numbers and, when possible, another carrier.
  5. If your name is wrong when you call, contact your own carrier and request an outgoing Caller ID correction.
  6. Use the carrier’s stated propagation period: up to 24 hours for Verizon Share Name ID requests or up to 72 hours for T-Mobile outgoing-name updates.
  7. If one receiving network remains wrong, contact that receiving carrier with dates, numbers, and screenshots or written descriptions.
  8. If the call is suspicious, verify independently and report possible spoofing instead of trusting the displayed name.
