You can correct an overly advanced class choice. The official version 1.0.6 update removed the restriction on downgrading, so a character can switch to an available lower-tier class. The announcement does not state the menu path, price, cooldown, or what happens to levels and equipment, so read the live confirmation screen before accepting.
What the downgrade change means
Duelist: Idle Expedition is an idle auto-battler with a large role tree. Its Steam listing describes seven main classes, 21 subclasses and 91 unique roles. That breadth makes an accidental selection understandable: a class may look attractive on paper but fit your current build, equipment or preferred play style poorly.
Version 1.0.6 changed the specific problem faced by players who selected a class that is too advanced. The official update says, “Removed the restriction on downgrading classes. You can now switch to lower-tier classes.” In practical terms, the restriction that previously blocked a move downward in the class hierarchy is no longer supposed to prevent that correction. This is a statement about moving to a lower tier; it is not proof that every class, subclass or branch can be exchanged freely.

What to check before changing class
Do these checks in order so that you know whether the problem is eligibility, versioning or an unlisted consequence of the switch:
- Confirm the game version. Make sure the running build includes version 1.0.6 or a later update. The downgrade rule is attributed to that update, not to an undated general game description.
- Write down the current class. Note the main class, subclass and role shown on the character screen. The game’s 91-role structure means that two choices that sound similar may occupy different positions in the tree.
- Identify the target tier. The confirmed permission is to move to a lower-tier class. Select a target that the live class interface labels as lower tier; do not assume that a neighboring branch or an equally ranked class qualifies.
- Check whether the target is unlocked. The class list should show which options are selectable. Earlier official patch notes reported reduced class-unlock requirements, so older guides may describe requirements that no longer match your installation. The official announcements page provides the versioned context, but the current game display is the authority for your character’s eligibility.
- Read the confirmation panel. Look for any displayed cost, timer, level treatment, equipment warning or other consequence. None of those details is specified in the v1.0.6 announcement, so do not rely on assumptions from another game or an old video.
How to attempt a lower-tier switch
The official note confirms the rule but does not document the exact button names or screen path. The safest procedure is therefore based on the controls visible in your current build, without treating an inferred label as an official instruction.
- Open the character or hero screen where the current class, subclass or role is displayed.
- Locate the class-management control. It may be presented as a class-change, edit, progression or similar control in your build; use the control that opens the class selection interface rather than changing equipment.
- Review the complete list or tree and select the lower-tier destination you want. If the destination is greyed out, read its requirement text instead of attempting to force the change.
- Inspect the confirmation window line by line. Record any resource amount, cooldown, reset warning, retained-progress statement or equipment notice that appears.
- Accept only after the displayed terms match your plan. If the panel does not explain an important consequence, cancel and verify the behavior in the game’s current help text or a later official announcement before spending resources.
- After the change, return to the character summary and confirm the new class, active abilities and equipment state. Let one combat cycle or an equivalent in-game update complete before deciding that the switch failed.
These steps describe where to look and what to verify, not an undocumented menu sequence. A future interface revision can rename or relocate the control while preserving the downgrade rule.

This distinction matters because “downgrade allowed” is narrower than “all class changes are unrestricted.” Do not infer cross-branch mobility, a free reset or automatic preservation of progression from the single sentence in the patch note.
Why old unlock advice may be wrong
The official version 1.0.3 notes reported that class-unlock requirements were reduced. That means eligibility has changed during development. A guide written before that patch may tell you to meet a requirement that has since been lowered, while a guide written for a different build may omit a condition added later. Use older material only as background; use the requirement text beside the class in your running game to decide whether you can select it.
If the desired lower-tier option is missing, compare the requirement wording rather than the class name. The missing entry may be locked, hidden behind a prerequisite role, unavailable to the current branch or simply displayed on another part of the tree. The announcements archive at Steam Community is the appropriate place to check for later version notes that alter those rules.

Keep the current class or switch?
The right decision depends on what the live confirmation screen says and whether the current class is actually harming your progression. Use this comparison before committing:

Because no official source specifies the cost or reset behavior, there is no evidence-based universal answer that switching is always better than keeping the original choice. Make the decision from the character-specific information the game presents.
Troubleshooting common problems
The lower-tier class is not listed
First confirm that the target is genuinely lower tier, not simply a different branch at the same level. Then check the target’s unlock text and your game version. The reduced requirements mentioned in version 1.0.3 show that eligibility can change, but they do not guarantee that every role is unlocked automatically.

The class-change control is missing
Do not assume the control has a universal name or location. Return to the screen that displays the character’s class rather than a combat or equipment screen, inspect secondary tabs or menus visible in that build, and verify that the game has finished updating. The v1.0.6 announcement confirms the mechanic, not its interface layout.
The game shows a price or timer you did not expect
Treat the on-screen value as the operative rule for your character and version. The announcement does not publish a standard price or cooldown, so an unexpected value cannot be declared a bug from the patch note alone. Capture the wording for your own records, cancel if the terms are unacceptable, and look for a newer official announcement before trying again.
Your abilities or equipment look different afterward
Check the class summary, active-skill list and equipment screen separately. A visual difference does not by itself prove that progress was deleted, and the official note does not say what is retained. Use the post-change values displayed by the game to determine what changed before spending materials or rebuilding a loadout.

The downgrade option vanished after an update
Recheck the class tier and the character’s current prerequisites, then read the latest in-game requirement text. Patch changes can alter unlock conditions, and the wording in version 1.0.6 should not be treated as a guarantee that every later build exposes the same target in the same place. Consult the official announcements archive for subsequent class-system changes.

You picked a role that is too specialized
If the class is available but its abilities do not fit your idle formation, open the class interface and look for an unlocked lower-tier destination. Compare the confirmation terms with the value of rebuilding the character. The downgrade rule gives you a route to correct the tier choice; it does not promise that the destination will preserve every specialization benefit.
You selected an advanced class before meeting your intended build requirements
Check whether the desired lower-tier role is now unlocked under the current requirement display. Since requirements were reduced in an earlier update, you may have more options than an old guide suggests. If the role remains locked, continue with the current class until the displayed prerequisite is met rather than assuming the downgrade itself bypasses unlock rules.

You want a completely different branch
Do not equate that request with a downgrade. The confirmed change concerns lower-tier classes; branch-to-branch switching is not documented by the announcement. If the desired destination is not shown as a selectable lower-tier option, the available evidence does not support claiming that the move is possible.
Reliable way to verify your result
- Record the class and role before changing.
- Read every line in the confirmation panel and note any resource deduction.
- After acceptance, verify the displayed class, skills, role progress and equipment separately.
- Observe the next normal idle update or combat resolution to ensure the new class is active.
- If the result conflicts with the confirmation text, preserve screenshots and report the discrepancy through the game’s current support or community channel.
The key rule is version-specific: v1.0.6 removed the block on moving down to a lower tier. Everything beyond that—cost, timing, retained progress, gear behavior and branch coverage—must come from the interface and version running on your character.
