If you keep losing equipment in the current Modern Warfare 4 DMZ, treat every deployment as a risk decision: a failed Exfil removes carried Backpack items unless they are in a Secure Slot. After a successful extraction, move valuable items into the FOB Stash. If an Operator becomes MIA, recover them with DMZ Cash, but expect them to return without gear.
“DMZ” can also mean the 2022 Warzone 2.0 mode, whose inventory rules are older. Check the game title and version shown on your screen before following a menu path in this guide.
First, confirm which DMZ you are playing
The instructions below lead with the systems described in Call of Duty’s Modern Warfare 4 DMZ Deep Dive guides published in June and October 2026. That version uses a Forward Operating Base (FOB), a shared Stash, Backpack upgrades, Secure Slots, DMZ Orders and MIA Operators.
The original Warzone 2.0 DMZ launched with a different ruleset. Its November 2022 tactical overview described DMZ as a single-life mode in which death removed all nonpermanent Backpack items. If your menus do not show the FOB, the Stash or the same Operator screens described here, stop and identify the exact game and date before assuming an item is bugged.

Why your loot disappears after a failed Exfil
In the current guide, Backpack contents and equipment are available during a deployment, but the protection boundary is the Secure Slot. Call of Duty’s October 9, 2026 FOB guide states that “anything not placed in a Secure Slot is lost if you fail to Exfil.” In practical terms, an item carried in an ordinary Backpack space is at risk when the deployment ends unsuccessfully, whether the failure comes from elimination, missing the extraction window or another condition that the game treats as a failed Exfil.
Do not assume that a teammate, a larger ordinary Backpack or an insurance-style mechanic will restore those items. The current official material establishes the Secure Slot rule, but it does not promise that normal Backpack space, another player’s inventory or an unlisted recovery system preserves lost equipment.
How to keep less gear at risk
Use Secure Slots for the items you would regret replacing
Secure Slots are Backpack spaces added when the Backpack is upgraded. Put the most difficult-to-replace or most important item in those spaces before you deploy. The official guide does not specify every eligibility rule or the complete capacity progression in the material available, so do not infer a fixed number of protected spaces from another DMZ generation or from a community screenshot.
A useful priority order is:
- Items needed for a specific DMZ Order that would otherwise force you to repeat the objective.
- Scarce equipment that takes substantial time or resources to craft again.
- High-value loot you have not yet deposited in the Stash.
- Common replacement items that you can obtain from a Free Loadout or another inexpensive deployment.
This order is a planning recommendation derived from the documented loss rule, not a published success-rate test. If an item is already safely stored at the FOB, there is no reason to expose a second copy unless the objective requires it.

Move extracted loot into the Stash immediately
A successful Exfil is not the final storage step. Return to the FOB and transfer wanted loot from the carried loadout into the Stash. The Stash holds extracted items at the FOB and is shared by your Active Duty Operators, so another Operator can use those supplies without you carrying them through a risky deployment.
| FOB inventory figure | What the 2026 guide says | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| General items | Up to 40 in the initial Stash | Version-specific starting capacity; weapons are counted separately. |
| Weapons | Up to 12 in the initial Stash | Also a version-specific starting capacity, not a universal permanent limit. |
| Basic Pack | Eight available slots without a proper Backpack equipped | Starting carried capacity in the current guide; later Backpack equipment can change capacity. |
When the Stash is full, decide what is worth keeping before the next deployment. Leaving valuable items in a carried Backpack because the Stash is crowded exposes them to the next failed Exfil. The guide gives the initial capacities above, but it does not establish a universal rule for every later upgrade, so use the capacity shown in your own FOB interface.
Choose a loadout that matches the risk
The current overview describes persistent Operator Backpacks and Loadouts as well as Free Loadouts for players who want to deploy with basic combat essentials. If repeated losses are discouraging, an appropriate response is to use a Free Loadout or equipment that is already replaceable from the Stash rather than taking your rarest items into a high-risk objective. That recommendation follows from the fact that unsecured carried items can be lost; it is not a tested claim that one loadout type produces a particular extraction rate.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteBefore pressing Deploy, ask three questions:
- Can I replace every carried item from the Stash, a Free Loadout or a short Order?
- Does this objective justify risking the item, or can I postpone it until the Operator has better protection?
- Have I placed the item I care about in a Secure Slot rather than an ordinary Backpack space?
What happens when an Operator becomes MIA
An MIA status concerns the Operator, not a magical return of the equipment that was lost. The current FOB guide says you can pay in-game DMZ Cash to recover an MIA Operator. Recovery preserves that Operator’s Traits, but the recovered Operator returns without gear. Call of Duty’s wording is explicit: “Recovered Operators return without their gear, so equip a new Loadout before deploying again.”

- Return to the FOB after the failed deployment.
- Open the Operator management screen and select the MIA Operator.
- Pay the displayed DMZ Cash recovery cost.
- Confirm that the Operator’s Traits are still present.
- Equip a fresh Loadout from available Stash items or choose a Free Loadout before deploying.
If you expected the recovered Operator to retain weapons, armor or Backpack contents, that expectation is the source of the confusion: recovery restores the Operator and Traits, not the missing gear. The DMZ Cash cost can also make immediate recovery a poor choice when the Operator’s next loadout would be weak; compare the cost with what you can rebuild first.
Rebuild after a bad run
Use DMZ Orders to replace resources
DMZ Orders award resources, loot and cash for future deployments. Select an Order whose requirements match what you still have available instead of repeatedly attempting the objective that caused the loss. Extracted resources can then be used at the FOB’s 3D Printer to craft equipment and gear.
For example, if an MIA recovery leaves you with no usable weapon, start with a Free Loadout or an Order that supplies replacement resources. Deposit any successful haul in the Stash before accepting a harder objective. This creates a recovery loop: low-risk deployment, successful extraction, Stash transfer, then a more demanding Order.
Do not confuse progression with item recovery
The June 6, 2026 overview says DMZ XP and progression rewards apply whether or not you successfully Exfil. A failed run can therefore move your progression forward even though it does not return the items you carried. Treat XP as compensation for progress, not as an inventory refund.

The same overview summarizes the trade-off this way: “Every deployment moves you forward, but greater success still demands skill and tactical judgment.” In practice, use the progression you earned to unlock or craft future equipment, while accepting that the specific unsecured items from the failed deployment are gone.
A pre-deployment checklist that prevents avoidable losses
- Verify the version. Confirm that the title screen and menus identify the current Modern Warfare 4 DMZ. Do not mix instructions from the 2022 Warzone 2.0 mode with the current FOB system.
- Inspect the Stash. Identify what is already safely stored and note the displayed remaining capacity for general items and weapons.
- Build the smallest useful loadout. Take only the equipment required for the chosen Order and a realistic extraction attempt.
- Fill Secure Slots first. Protect the item whose replacement cost, crafting time or Order requirement is highest. Confirm the item is visibly in a Secure Slot, not merely somewhere in the Backpack.
- Choose a recovery plan. Decide whether you can continue with a Free Loadout if the Operator is lost and whether you have enough DMZ Cash for MIA recovery.
- Check the objective against the risk. If the objective demands a rare item but offers little reward, postpone it until you can secure that item or replace it cheaply.
- After Exfil, return to the FOB inventory screen. Move extracted loot into the Stash immediately instead of assuming the carried Backpack is permanent storage.
How to decide what to carry
No official source names a universally best route, weapon, squad size or map for preventing losses. Use the following decision axes instead of copying a setup from another version:
| Question | Lower-risk choice | Higher-risk choice |
|---|---|---|
| How much gear is exposed? | Free Loadout or common items already replaceable from the Stash | Rare equipment and multiple items outside Secure Slots |
| Can the item be protected? | Place it in a Secure Slot or leave it in the FOB Stash | Carry it in an ordinary Backpack space |
| What does replacement require? | One short Order or readily available crafting resources | Several deployments, scarce resources or a paid MIA recovery first |
| Does the objective justify exposure? | Reward clearly supports the item at risk | Reward is uncertain while the objective has no recovery value |
The table describes a decision framework inferred from the documented mechanics, not measured performance. Your actual risk also depends on the objective, the squad and the conditions in that deployment.
Troubleshooting common loot-loss complaints
“I put it in my Backpack, but it vanished.”
Check whether the item was in a Secure Slot or an ordinary Backpack space at the moment the Exfil failed. The current rule protects Secure Slots; it does not protect every Backpack position. If the item was outside a Secure Slot, the official guide gives no recovery procedure for restoring it.

“My recovered Operator has no weapons.”
That is expected after MIA recovery. Traits remain, but gear does not. Equip a new Loadout before deploying, using the Stash or a Free Loadout rather than sending the recovered Operator out empty-handed.
“The Stash says it is full.”
Separate general items from weapons when counting capacity. The initial 2026 limits are up to 40 general items and 12 weapons. Remove low-value duplicates, craft useful gear at the 3D Printer or deploy with replaceable supplies before bringing back more loot. Do not treat those initial figures as a permanent limit for every upgrade.
“I failed Exfil, but my progression increased.”
That is consistent with the June 2026 overview, which says DMZ XP and progression rewards apply whether or not Exfil succeeds. Progression advancement does not mean the carried Backpack was preserved.

“The menus in this guide are not on my screen.”
Check the game title, platform build and mode name. The 2022 Warzone 2.0 overview and the 2026 Modern Warfare 4 guides describe different generations of DMZ. A missing FOB, Secure Slot or MIA option may indicate that you are playing the older mode rather than experiencing a malfunction.
What the older Warzone 2.0 rule means
Call of Duty’s November 2022 Warzone 2.0 tactical overview described DMZ as a single-life mode and said death caused the loss of all nonpermanent Backpack items. That historical rule explains why older guides often tell players that death wipes carried loot, but it should not be presented as a complete description of the current Modern Warfare 4 system.
Do not copy the current Secure Slot, shared Stash or MIA-recovery instructions into a legacy guide without confirming that the specific game build actually contains those features. Conversely, do not assume the older “all nonpermanent items” wording explains a current deployment when the FOB interface shows Secure Slots and Operator recovery.
The practical rule to remember
Before deployment, secure or leave behind anything you cannot afford to lose. After a successful Exfil, store the loot at the FOB rather than carrying it into another fight. After a failure, recover the Operator only when the DMZ Cash cost makes sense, then rebuild through a Free Loadout, DMZ Orders and 3D Printer crafting. This approach cannot make every deployment succeed, but it stops one failed run from also sacrificing the rest of your inventory.
