If Windows is scanning or repairing drive C:, there is no universally safe, documented way to skip an active scan—and skipping it does not fix the underlying problem. The right next step depends on whether Windows still starts, whether the issue is a startup failure, or whether Windows system files may be damaged. Note the exact screen message and your Windows version before choosing a recovery path.

First, identify which problem you have

  • Windows starts, but reports drive errors: Microsoft documents CHKDSK as the repair path for file-system errors. This does not establish that a recurring scan is harmless or that the drive is physically healthy. Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guidance includes the command below.
  • Windows will not start or keeps restarting: use Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) and try Startup Repair, which is designed for certain startup problems.
  • Windows starts but system files may be corrupted: use DISM and System File Checker (SFC); these repair Windows image or protected system-file problems, not physical disk damage.

If important files are accessible, back them up before attempting recovery options that could affect data.

If Windows starts and reports drive errors

Microsoft’s documented CHKDSK steps are for an administrator Command Prompt. The command checks and repairs file-system errors on C:; Windows may ask to schedule it for the next restart.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Command Prompt with administrator privileges.
  2. Type chkdsk /f C: and press Enter. Keep the space between chkdsk and /f.
  3. If Windows asks to schedule the check for the next restart, confirm, then restart the computer.

This is a repair procedure, not a method for bypassing a scan. If the message returns repeatedly, the command alone cannot establish whether the drive has a hardware problem. Back up accessible files and seek device-specific diagnosis from the computer or drive manufacturer rather than assuming the scan can safely be ignored.

  • Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
  • Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C

If Windows will not boot: run Startup Repair in WinRE

Startup Repair can diagnose and attempt to fix certain startup failures, including some caused by missing or damaged system files, damaged boot configuration data, MBR problems, incompatible drivers, or registry errors. It is not a general-purpose physical-drive repair tool.

  1. Enter WinRE. If Windows still opens, use Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now on Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now on Windows 10. Menu wording can vary by release.
  2. If the PC cannot reach Settings, WinRE may appear after repeated failed starts. Alternatively, start the PC from Windows installation media and select Repair your PC rather than installing Windows.
  3. In WinRE, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair, then follow the prompts. If the device is encrypted, have its BitLocker recovery key available; WinRE may require it.
  4. If Startup Repair cannot resolve the problem, read its report and use it to choose a supported next recovery step rather than repeatedly forcing restarts.

See Microsoft’s Startup Repair instructions and Windows Recovery Environment guidance. Microsoft identifies these recovery instructions for Windows 10 and Windows 11; Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025.

Using installation media to reach recovery tools

If the affected PC will not start and WinRE is unavailable, Windows installation media created on another working computer can provide a route to recovery tools. Boot from the media and choose Repair your PC. A USB flash drive in this case holds the installation media; it is not itself a disk-repair tool and does not diagnose a failing internal drive. Follow Microsoft’s current Windows recovery options guidance for the appropriate media and steps.

If Windows system files may be corrupted: run DISM and SFC

Microsoft’s System File Checker guidance uses DISM and SFC to address Windows image and protected system-file problems. SFC scans protected files and replaces corrupted files with a cached copy; it does not test the physical health of the drive.

  4. Leave the Command Prompt window open until verification reaches 100 percent, then follow the result message.

Choose carefully before reset or reinstall

Recovery options differ in how much they change or remove. Microsoft warns: “Before you start: Some recovery options can result in data loss.” Review the effects before proceeding, and back up important files first if they are accessible.

  • System Restore: a recovery option for returning Windows system state to an earlier point; review the on-screen description before confirming.
  • Reset this PC: resets Windows, with available choices that can affect personal files and installed apps differently. Read the selected option’s explanation before starting.
  • Recovery or installation media: can provide access to recovery tools or reinstall Windows. Reinstalling from installation media removes everything from the device, according to Microsoft’s guidance.

Microsoft’s recovery-options guide explains the available paths. Do not treat reset or reinstall as a way to skip a drive scan; choose them only after considering data loss and whether you can recover your files.

Why a safe universal “skip” method is not established

The Windows guidance cited here documents repair and recovery procedures, not a guaranteed safe way to cancel an active scan. An on-screen scan may be part of a scheduled disk check or a recovery sequence; without the exact message and Windows version, it is not possible to say which one applies. Do not use an unverified registry edit or command to suppress it. If Windows remains usable, back up important data and follow the repair path for the specific symptom; if it will not boot, use WinRE.
