When wildfire smoke makes outdoor air unhealthy, reduce exposure first: check current particulate readings and local alerts, close the home to smoky air, establish a cooler cleaner-air room, and filter that room continuously. Use central HVAC recirculation with a system-compatible MERV-13-or-higher filter, avoid creating particles indoors, and move to a cooled, filtered location if your home becomes dangerously hot. Follow evacuation orders regardless of indoor-air measures.

1. Check conditions before deciding what is safe

Wildfire smoke can change substantially over a single day. Do not judge safety only by visibility or smell. Fine particles may be present when the sky looks clearer, and indoor concentrations can rise during prolonged smoke events.

Use the Fire and Smoke Map and local alerts

During a fire, check the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and AirNow Fire and Smoke Map for current PM2.5 information, and monitor alerts from your state, county, tribe, or emergency-management agency. Recheck conditions before exercising, commuting, opening windows, or doing outdoor work. Local evacuation and shelter instructions take priority over efforts to improve air inside your home.

Let the reading guide your activity

When authorities advise reducing exposure, shorten outdoor trips and avoid strenuous activity. If you must work outside, take regular breaks in cleaner indoor air. Conditions can worsen quickly as wind shifts or a smoke plume moves, so reassess rather than relying on a decision made earlier in the day.

2. Make a closed, cleaner-air room

A cleaner-air room is an interior space where you can spend as much time as practical while smoke is elevated. It lowers exposure; it does not remove every pollutant or make evacuation unnecessary.

Choose the room

  • Pick an interior room with as few windows and exterior doors as possible.
  • Choose a room large enough for the people who may need to use it.
  • Plan for cooling, sleeping, medication, water, chargers, and other essentials so you do not repeatedly open the room to smoky areas.

Seal it from outdoor smoke

  1. Close all windows and exterior doors.
  2. Turn off window fans and other equipment that brings outdoor air inside.
  3. If your HVAC system has a fresh-air intake, close it while smoke is high, following the equipment instructions.
  4. Keep the room closed as much as practical. Openings for normal entry and exit let smoke back in.

Do not trade smoke for dangerous heat

A closed home can become unsafe during extreme heat. Use air conditioning or a heat pump on recirculation, window shades, and fans that do not draw smoky outdoor air inside. If you cannot keep the room at a safe temperature, move to a cooled building or designated clean-air shelter with filtered air. Heat illness can be an immediate danger, particularly for older adults, young children, and people with medical conditions.

3. Filter particles continuously

Portable filtration is usually the most practical way to clean air in one room. Run a correctly sized portable air cleaner continuously, preferably at the highest fan setting people can tolerate. Keep doors and windows closed while it operates.

What to compare in a portable cleaner

Criterion What to check
Room suitability The manufacturer’s stated room area should meet or exceed the room you intend to clean. A unit rated for a small room will not provide the same air turnover in a large open space.
Clean-air delivery or airflow Compare the published clean-air delivery or airflow at the setting you can actually run. A high setting that is too noisy to use is less useful than a quieter setting operated continuously.
Filter supply Confirm replacement filters are available and check how often heavy smoke may require replacement. Smoke loading can shorten filter life.
Ozone generation Avoid ozone-generating air cleaners. Ozone is an irritant and is not an appropriate response to wildfire smoke indoors.
Placement Allow unobstructed intake and exhaust, and place the unit where people spend time in the cleaner-air room.

A room-sized portable HEPA air cleaner is a reasonable option when it meets these criteria. No particular brand or model has been established as superior here, and a cleaner should not be described as eliminating smoke.

Use central HVAC when the equipment can handle it

If your home has central heating or cooling, select recirculation or continuous fan operation rather than an outdoor-air setting. Use a MERV-13-or-higher filter only when the system is designed to handle the added resistance. A filter that is too restrictive can reduce airflow or strain equipment.

  1. Set the system to recirculate indoor air.
  2. Close the dedicated outdoor-air or fresh-air intake if your system provides one and the manual permits it.
  3. Install a system-compatible MERV-13-or-higher filter.
  4. Inspect the filter during heavy smoke and replace it when visibly soiled or according to the equipment guidance.
  5. Ask a qualified HVAC professional if you do not know which filter rating your system supports.

Do not force a high-efficiency filter into a system that cannot safely accommodate it. Compatibility matters more than choosing the highest printed rating.

DIY fan-and-filter units are a fallback, not an equal substitute

If a portable cleaner is unavailable, a newer box fan fitted with a properly sized filter may provide a temporary alternative. AirNow guidance specifies a fan from 2012 or later. Avoid older fans, and never leave an older model unattended or running while people sleep. Follow the fan manufacturer’s safety instructions, keep the assembly stable, and stop using it if the motor, plug, or cord becomes unusually hot or damaged. This improvised setup should not be presented as equivalent to a certified portable air cleaner.

4. Stop adding particles inside

Indoor sources can make air unhealthy even when windows are closed. During heavy smoke, avoid or postpone:

  • Smoking or vaping indoors.
  • Candles, incense, fireplaces, and other open flames.
  • Gas or wood-burning appliances when an electric alternative is available.
  • Frying and other cooking that creates substantial smoke or fine particles.
  • Sweeping, dusting that stirs settled material, and vacuuming unless the vacuum has effective filtration and the task is necessary.

If cooking is unavoidable, use a properly vented range hood only when it exhausts safely and does not pull smoky outdoor air into the home. Keep the cleaner running and limit the activity to the shortest practical time.

5. Protect people most likely to be harmed

Wildfire smoke contains gases and fine particles. Fine particles are the largest health concern identified in AirNow guidance because they can irritate the eyes and respiratory system and aggravate heart and lung disease. During prolonged heavy smoke, particles can accumulate indoors even when they are not visible.

Take extra precautions for:

  • People with asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, heart disease, or another heart or lung condition.
  • Children and teenagers.
  • Older adults, generally those 65 and over.
  • Pregnant people.
  • Anyone with greater exposure because of outdoor work, housing conditions, or limited access to filtration and cooling.

People with respiratory disease should follow their clinician’s medication and action plan. Contact a clinician if symptoms worsen, if prescribed medication is not controlling symptoms, or if heavy smoke persists and you need an individualized plan.

Know when symptoms require urgent help

Seek urgent medical care for severe trouble breathing, chest pain, confusion, fainting, blue or gray lips, or symptoms that are rapidly worsening. Emergency instructions from local authorities and your health-care team take precedence over general indoor-air advice.

6. If you must go outside

Essential outdoor exposure should be as short and light as possible. Postpone exercise, yard work, and other nonessential tasks until air quality improves. Take breaks indoors in cleaner air.

For unavoidable outdoor work, use a well-fitting N95 respirator. Cloth face coverings do not provide the same protection against fine particles from wildfire smoke. A respirator cannot make prolonged exposure safe, and it does not protect against every gas in smoke, so combine it with shorter exposure and lower exertion.

7. A practical response sequence

  1. Check: Review the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map and local emergency alerts.
  2. Reduce exposure: Stay inside when advised, cancel strenuous outdoor activity, and limit essential trips.
  3. Create the room: Select an interior space, close windows and doors, and keep it supplied and cool.
  4. Filter: Run an appropriately sized portable cleaner continuously, or use compatible central HVAC recirculation with a MERV-13-or-higher filter.
  5. Remove sources: Stop smoking, combustion, smoky cooking, sweeping, and other particle-producing tasks.
  6. Manage heat: Use cooling without bringing in smoky air; move to a cooled, filtered location if the home becomes unsafe.
  7. Protect higher-risk people: Follow medical action plans and obtain advice when symptoms worsen.
  8. Recheck: Repeat the air-quality and alert check because smoke conditions can change during the day.

8. Common mistakes and their fixes

Mistake Why it fails Better approach
Relying on smell or visible haze Fine particles may be present without a strong odor or obvious smoke. Use current PM2.5 readings and official alerts.
Opening windows to cool the house It can bring a large amount of smoke indoors. Use recirculating cooling, shades, and fans; relocate if heat becomes unsafe.
Using any filter in central HVAC An overly restrictive filter can impair an incompatible system. Use MERV-13-or-higher only when the equipment can safely handle it, and ask an HVAC professional if unsure.
Running an ozone generator Ozone is itself an airway irritant. Choose particle filtration without ozone generation.
Leaving an old box fan running unattended Older fans present a safety concern. Use a fan manufactured in 2012 or later, follow safety directions, and do not use older models unattended or during sleep.
Assuming a clean-air room replaces evacuation Filtration reduces exposure but cannot address fire, structural danger, or all pollutants. Follow evacuation and shelter instructions immediately.

9. What this guidance can and cannot establish

This is U.S.-focused guidance based on EPA and AirNow materials dated June 2026; the related factsheet collection was reported updated September 1, 2026. It provides an exposure-reduction strategy, not a guarantee of a particular indoor PM2.5 level or health outcome. Device performance, filter life, and HVAC compatibility vary by room, equipment, maintenance, and operating setting.
