When Wi‑Fi or graphics stop working after an Ubuntu installation, do not install a random vendor driver first. Determine whether Wi‑Fi is switched off, whether Ubuntu detects the adapter, and which Ubuntu release and hardware you have. For NVIDIA graphics, use Ubuntu’s Additional Drivers application or ubuntu-drivers, install the package marked proprietary, tested, and restart. For AMD and Intel, identify the exact GPU and release before following hardware-specific documentation.
Start by separating a connection problem from a driver problem
“Wi‑Fi not working after installing Ubuntu” can describe several different failures. The wireless radio may be disabled, the laptop may have a physical switch, Ubuntu may detect the adapter but fail to authenticate, or the hardware may not appear in the system inventory at all. Graphics problems likewise range from a missing reboot after an update to an unsupported or incorrectly installed package.
Use this order: check controls, inspect the device, record the Ubuntu release and model, obtain temporary internet access if necessary, and only then choose a driver path. This avoids applying a chipset-specific fix to the wrong machine.
Check Wi‑Fi and airplane mode
- Open Settings and make sure Wi‑Fi is switched on.
- Confirm that Airplane Mode is off.
- Check for a laptop-side wireless switch or a keyboard key that controls the radio. Some keys require holding Fn.
- Open a Terminal and run:
nmcli device
Look for a wireless interface and its state. A connected interface means Ubuntu has associated with a network; it does not prove that the router or internet service is working. If the command shows Wi‑Fi connected but websites still do not load, test another device on the same network and investigate the router or internet provider before changing drivers.

Check whether Ubuntu can find the Wi‑Fi adapter
If Ubuntu cannot find your Wi‑Fi adapter, identify the hardware before searching for a package. Open Terminal and run:
sudo lshw -C network
This displays network hardware and interfaces. Record the manufacturer, model, and any driver information shown. For an internal PCI or PCI Express adapter, also run:
lspci
For a USB wireless adapter, use:
lsusb
These commands answer a critical question: is the adapter present in the hardware inventory? A device that appears in lshw, lspci, or lsusb may have a software, firmware, or configuration problem. A device missing from all relevant output can indicate a detection issue, a disabled device, a hardware fault, or support that is not present in that Ubuntu release. Do not guess a chipset-specific command in that situation.

Use Ethernet as a temporary bridge
If Wi‑Fi is unavailable, connect the computer to the router with Ethernet, if a port and cable are available. This does not repair the wireless driver and is not a guaranteed permanent solution; it simply provides a working connection for Ubuntu updates, package downloads, and support diagnostics. Ubuntu hardware guidance specifically recommends an alternative working connection when wireless recovery requires downloading software.
After connecting Ethernet, run the normal Software Updater and reboot when Ubuntu requests it. Then repeat nmcli device and the hardware inventory checks. If Ethernet works while the wireless interface is still missing, the problem is localized to wireless hardware detection or support rather than general networking.
When Wi‑Fi connects and then drops
A dropping connection is not automatically evidence of a bad driver. Ubuntu’s troubleshooting guidance identifies several possibilities:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Weak signal: move nearer to the access point and check whether the connection becomes stable.
- Incomplete setup: reselect the network and enter its password carefully. A connection that never completes can be an authentication or credential problem.
- Unreliable hardware or driver: compare behavior with another network and inspect the adapter model and release-specific support.
- Busy network: other clients or interference can make an otherwise healthy adapter appear unreliable.
Check signal quality and whether other devices can reach the internet before replacing packages. If the same network fails only on Ubuntu and the adapter is visible in hardware inventory, collect the model, release, and observed state from nmcli device for a targeted support request.

NVIDIA graphics: use Ubuntu’s supported driver path
Ubuntu provides two supported ways to manage NVIDIA drivers: the graphical Additional Drivers application and the ubuntu-drivers command-line tool. They use the same selection logic. Both install Ubuntu-managed, pre-built signed drivers; Ubuntu documents these packages as known to work with Secure Boot.
For an ordinary desktop installation, Ubuntu recommends the newest NVIDIA option labeled proprietary, tested. The exact package name and branch depend on your Ubuntu release, GPU, kernel, and enabled repositories, so do not copy a branch number from an unrelated article.
Install through Additional Drivers
- Open the applications menu and launch Additional Drivers. If it is not visible there, open Software & Updates and select its Additional Drivers tab.
- Wait while Ubuntu detects the GPU and available packages.
- Select the NVIDIA entry marked proprietary, tested unless your hardware documentation or support case specifies another supported choice.
- Choose Apply Changes and authenticate when prompted.
- Restart the computer after installation. The graphics module must load during boot.
If the list is empty or no tested option appears, stop before downloading an installer from NVIDIA. Record the GPU and Ubuntu release and seek release-specific guidance instead.

The command-line route is useful on a minimal installation, for repeatable setup, or when you are working remotely. First list what Ubuntu detects:

sudo ubuntu-drivers list
Then allow Ubuntu to select and install the best matching package:
sudo ubuntu-drivers install
Restart when the command finishes:
sudo reboot
The automatic command chooses from packages available for that machine and release. It is safer than hard-coding an example package branch because package availability changes with Ubuntu releases, GPU support, kernel versions, and repository state.
Why not use a downloaded vendor installer?
Ubuntu’s desktop documentation recommends installing drivers supplied as Ubuntu packages rather than downloading drivers directly from NVIDIA. An outside installer can overwrite Ubuntu-provided files, complicate future updates, and potentially break Secure Boot. Keep the Additional Drivers application and ubuntu-drivers as your first recovery paths.

This reboot remedy applies to the documented NVML version-mismatch message. It is not a universal cure for every black screen or graphics failure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Black screen after installing an NVIDIA driver
A black screen immediately after a driver change can result from a module that has not been loaded, a package mismatch, Secure Boot state, or a release-and-GPU combination that needs a different supported branch. First perform a normal restart if the system is still responding. If the desktop remains unusable, return to Ubuntu’s supported recovery channel: document the exact driver selected, GPU model, Ubuntu release, and whether Secure Boot is enabled, then use Ubuntu support or the computer maker’s instructions for that combination.
Avoid beginning with module blacklisting, package purges, or a vendor shell installer. Those are advanced, hardware-specific interventions and can remove the known-good Ubuntu package set that support personnel need to inspect. If the machine has a temporary wired connection, keep Ethernet attached while checking updates or collecting logs.
What about AMD and Intel graphics?
Ubuntu’s default installation uses open-source graphics drivers for supported hardware, and some proprietary options can be enabled during installation or later. That does not mean every system needs a proprietary package. AMD and Intel procedures depend on the exact GPU and Ubuntu release; there is no single universal command established for every combination.
Identify the GPU and release first. Use the release-matched Ubuntu documentation or the hardware maker’s support guidance, and avoid legacy community examples that name obsolete Ubuntu releases or package names. If the GPU is detected but acceleration or display output is wrong, include the inventory details and the symptoms in a support request rather than mixing instructions from different releases.
Choose the right recovery route
| Problem or goal | First action | Why | When to escalate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wi‑Fi switch, airplane mode, or keyboard toggle | Enable Wi‑Fi and disable Airplane Mode; check hardware controls | These controls can disable a healthy adapter without any driver failure | If the interface remains absent from nmcli device |
| Adapter identification | Run sudo lshw -C network, lspci, or lsusb |
Model information determines which support instructions apply | If the hardware does not appear or no supported package is listed |
| Temporary internet | Use Ethernet | Provides a bridge for updates and downloads | If Ethernet also fails, investigate general networking or hardware |
| NVIDIA desktop installation | Additional Drivers | Visual selection of Ubuntu-tested packages | If no tested driver appears or the desktop will not start |
| NVIDIA remote or automated installation | sudo ubuntu-drivers list, then sudo ubuntu-drivers install |
Uses the same Ubuntu selection logic without the GUI | If installation errors or the GPU is not detected |
| NVML version mismatch after an update | Restart, then rerun nvidia-smi |
Loads the updated kernel module | If the exact mismatch persists after reboot |
| AMD or Intel graphics | Identify GPU and Ubuntu release first | Available steps are release- and hardware-dependent | Use matching Ubuntu or manufacturer support |
What to include when you need support
Provide a concise hardware and software record instead of saying only “Ubuntu cannot find my Wi‑Fi” or “the NVIDIA driver is broken.” Include:
- Exact Ubuntu release and whether it is Desktop or another edition.
- Wi‑Fi adapter manufacturer and model, or the GPU model.
- Output or relevant lines from
nmcli device, sudo lshw -C network, lspci, orlsusb. - Whether the device is internal PCI hardware or a USB adapter.
- Whether Ethernet works and whether Secure Boot is enabled.
- The precise error, such as Failed to initialize NVML: Driver/library version mismatch, and whether it appeared before or after an update.
With those details, Ubuntu support or the device maker can match instructions to the actual release and hardware. If the adapter or GPU is absent from inventory and no supported driver is offered, treat that as a detection or support-coverage issue, not an invitation to try random installers.
