During ashfall, protect people first: go indoors, close windows and doors, turn off heating or cooling systems that pull outside air, and avoid driving unless authorities say travel is necessary. After the ash stops, clean without grinding particles into glass, paint, filters, or electrical equipment. For drinking water, follow the current instructions from your water utility and public-health agency; general ashfall advice cannot replace a local advisory.
Volcanic ash is fine, abrasive rock and glass. It can clog air filters, reduce airflow, make roads slippery, scratch windshields, damage engines and brakes, and alter water chemistry. The right response depends on ash depth and composition, how long exposure lasted, whether a system draws outdoor air, and whether water comes from a public utility or a private roof-catchment tank.
What to do while ash is falling
Reduce exposure immediately
- Move indoors and keep doors and windows closed.
- Turn off air conditioners, heat pumps, ventilation fans, and other equipment that brings outdoor air inside, unless local emergency instructions specify another setting.
- Limit opening exterior doors. If you must go outside, keep the trip short and wear a NIOSH-approved N95 respirator. Eye protection and clothing that can be removed before entering the living area also reduce contamination.
- Keep children, older adults, and anyone with breathing or heart conditions away from ash-heavy air and cleanup work.
- Monitor local emergency-management, health-department, and utility alerts. Conditions can change when wind remobilizes settled ash.
Do not sweep or blow ash into the air. Dry ash can remain suspended and be inhaled, and driving can create a cloud that affects other people and reduces visibility.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf you must drive
USGS advises avoiding driving because ash can harm vehicles, make roads slippery, reduce visibility, and irritate people downwind. If travel is unavoidable, drive slowly, leave extra stopping distance, use headlights as required by local law, and keep the windshield wet with ample washer fluid. Do not use dry wipers on an ash-coated windshield: the particles can scratch the glass.

Cleaning and inspecting a car exposed to ash
Before starting the engine
Never run an engine without its air filter. Ash can pass through an unfiltered intake, clog filtration, contribute to overheating, and accelerate wear. If the vehicle was parked during heavy ashfall, inspect the engine-air and cabin-air filter areas before driving. Use the owner’s manual for the exact access points and filter specifications.
Remove ash without scratching surfaces
- Park in a sheltered place, preferably under cover, and put on an N95 respirator before disturbing settled ash.
- Do not brush dry ash across paint, mirrors, or glass. Do not use a dry cloth or dry windshield wipers.
- Rinse loose ash away with clean water before washing. Work from the top down so particles are carried off rather than dragged across a panel.
- Use a vehicle-safe soap and a clean, frequently rinsed mitt. Use separate materials for wheels and painted surfaces.
- Rinse and dry with a clean, soft towel. If water is scarce or an official water advisory is in effect, wait for local guidance rather than creating runoff or using questionable water.
Ash can enter openings and abrade brakes, seals, engine components, transmissions, paint, and glass. Do not assume a clean exterior means the mechanical parts are unaffected.
When to obtain professional inspection
Arrange a qualified inspection after substantial exposure, especially if any of these occur:

There is no universal ash-depth threshold that automatically requires service. The vehicle’s make, model, year, exposure duration, and the ash’s composition matter. Follow the manufacturer’s maintenance instructions. USGS notes that some of its detailed vehicle recommendations were developed after the May 18, 1980, Mount St. Helens eruption and may not reflect modern vehicle technology, so treat them as general precautions rather than current specifications.

Protecting and cleaning an HVAC system
During ashfall
Keep windows and doors closed and shut down systems that draw outdoor air. This includes many fresh-air ventilation settings, some heat pumps, and outside-air dampers. If your building has a special shelter or filtration procedure, follow the building manager’s or emergency authority’s instructions instead.
Inspect filters and outdoor components
Ash can load a filter quickly and accumulate on condenser coils or other intake surfaces, restricting airflow and reducing performance. Typical household filters are not designed for the particle volumes produced by heavy ashfall. USGS gives an extreme operational example in which replacement could be needed as often as every 30 minutes during exceptionally high ashfall rates. That is not a normal household schedule; inspect frequently and replace only when the filter is loaded or the equipment instructions require it.

- CHANGE YOUR FILTER OFTEN: For optimal performance, make sure to change your filter at least once every 90 days
- Turn the system off and isolate power according to the equipment instructions. Do not open energized electrical panels.
- Remove the filter before cleaning surrounding components. Photograph its orientation if you are unsure which way the airflow arrow points.
- For accessible external intakes or condenser surfaces, remove loose ash with a vacuum or gentle compressed air at no more than 30 psi. Direct air so ash leaves the equipment rather than entering deeper into it.
- Wipe remaining residue with a cloth. Avoid forcing ash between fins.
- Install a correctly sized replacement filter with the airflow arrow pointing in the proper direction.
- Restart only when intakes are clear and the unit is dry and safe.
Do not hose or wet-clean ash around motors, wiring, controls, or condenser coils unless the equipment manufacturer specifically permits that method. Water can clog fins, spread ash into the cabinet, or create a shock and short-circuit hazard.

- The filter compartment, blower, evaporator coil, or ductwork contains visible ash.
- The unit is on a roof, ladder, or other unsafe-to-access location.
- Airflow remains weak, the system overheats, trips a breaker, smells unusual, or makes new noises after filter replacement.
- Electrical parts are wet, damaged, or contaminated.
A replacement HVAC filter is a maintenance item, not an automatic requirement after every ash event. Match the filter’s dimensions and rating to the installed system and the manufacturer’s specifications; there is no universal filter size or brand for ashfall.
What to do if ash reaches your water supply
Public water systems
If you see ash in tap water, do not make a personal safety determination from appearance alone. Check the water utility and local public-health authority for a current notice before drinking, cooking, making ice, or preparing infant formula. Ask whether the notice applies to your neighborhood, the type of treatment in use, and whether boiling, flushing, filtration, or bottled water is recommended.

USGS public guidance says ash-contaminated water will usually become unpalatable before it presents a health risk. That is broad guidance, not a guarantee for every ash composition, source, treatment plant, or event. Ash can increase turbidity and acidity; utility operators may need to monitor source-water and treated-water pH and turbidity. A local advisory reflects those measurements and the actual condition of the system.
Private wells and roof-catchment tanks
Private supplies need separate advice because they do not receive the same treatment and monitoring as a public network. For roof-catchment rainwater, disconnect downpipes from storage tanks before ashfall when it is safe to do so. This keeps roof ash from being washed into the tank.

If ash has already entered a tank, keep using the water only as local authorities direct. Do not invent a universal cleaning or disinfection recipe: the appropriate action depends on tank design, sediment depth, contamination, available replacement water, and test results. Contact the local utility or health authority about whether to let sediment settle, draw from the tank, clean it, or have the water tested.

Using water after ash settles
Where authorities say the supply is suitable and ash is suspended, allowing particles to settle and using the clear portion may be part of general guidance. It does not remove dissolved contaminants or correct a utility advisory. Do not rely on taste, odor, or a household filter alone to override an official notice.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Safe cleanup and waste handling
Wear a NIOSH-approved N95 respirator for necessary outdoor cleanup. Minimize the amount of ash you disturb, dampen it only where local guidance allows, and avoid dry sweeping or compressed air that sends ash into occupied areas. Keep contaminated clothing and shoes away from living spaces, and wash hands after handling ash.
Follow local instructions for collecting and disposing of ash. Heavy wet ash can overload roofs, gutters, and drains, while loose dry ash can become airborne again. Do not wash large quantities into storm drains unless authorities specifically direct that method.
