First confirm that your aircraft is Starlink-equipped in United’s official Starlink Tracker. On an equipped flight, leave the phone or laptop in airplane mode, turn Wi‑Fi back on, join the onboard United Wi‑Fi network, open the captive portal manually if necessary, and sign in to MileagePlus. If another device owns the session, use Switch device. Temporarily disable iCloud Private Relay and reconnect. A missing network, repeated timeout, or failure affecting several passengers usually indicates an aircraft-side outage rather than a setting you can repair.
1. Check whether this flight actually has Starlink
United is installing Starlink by aircraft, not by route. Two flights between the same cities can therefore have different Wi‑Fi systems. Check United’s official Starlink Tracker before spending time on device troubleshooting; it is the authoritative availability check and was updated October 15, 2026.
The rollout is still in progress. United reported more than 300 regional aircraft equipped in February 2026 and expected more than 500 mainline aircraft by the end of 2026, for more than 800 equipped aircraft overall. The airline also said its first transatlantic widebody customer flight with Starlink was flight 14 on June 22, 2026, with nearly 60 widebodies expected to receive the system during 2026. These figures describe the fleet at those dates, not a guarantee for a particular departure.

- If the tracker lists your aircraft as Starlink-equipped, use the Starlink connection sequence below.
- If it lists conventional United Wi‑Fi, the Starlink-specific portal and free-service message will not appear.
- If the tracker does not clearly identify the aircraft, ask a flight attendant which Wi‑Fi system is installed before troubleshooting.
2. Connect in the normal sequence
Captive portals work best when the device is not trying to use cellular data or a previously cached sign-in page. Follow these steps in order.

- Enable airplane mode. This prevents cellular roaming while onboard.
- Turn Wi‑Fi back on. Airplane mode does not prevent Wi‑Fi; you need both settings at once.
- Join the onboard network. Select United Wi‑Fi. The exact network label can vary by aircraft, so follow the crew’s announcement if a different label is shown.
- Wait for the captive portal. Give the network a moment to redirect your browser. If no page opens, launch a normal browser window and navigate to the onboard United Wi‑Fi portal rather than relying on an old login tab.
- Select Get Started. The portal should present the Starlink access flow on an equipped aircraft.
- Sign in to MileagePlus. United says Starlink Wi‑Fi is free for MileagePlus customers on equipped aircraft. If you do not have an account, create the free account offered by the portal before trying again; do not assume that a paid Wi‑Fi purchase will unlock the Starlink flow.
- Complete every on-screen step. Accept the displayed rules and finish any advertisement or handoff. A TechRadar hands-on report from 2025 describes the portal opening the United app when installed, asking the passenger to connect, and showing an advertisement before access.
- Test a simple page. Once the portal confirms access, open a new tab and load a lightweight page before starting a large download or video stream.
United advertises speeds up to 250 Mbps for Starlink service. That is a stated maximum, not a guaranteed speed for every aircraft, altitude, route, or time of day.
3. When the United Wi‑Fi login page will not open
Reconnect and discard the stale redirect
- Open Wi‑Fi settings and forget or disconnect from United Wi‑Fi.
- Close every browser tab that was waiting for a login page.
- Reconnect to the onboard network.
- Open a fresh, ordinary browser window and navigate to the United Wi‑Fi portal again.
A browser can retain an expired redirect or an incomplete authentication tab. A fresh window forces a new captive-portal request. Private browsing is not required, but an already-open login tab is a common source of a loop.
Retry a reported timeout
If the United portal displays a timeout, return to its portal homepage and retry the connection flow. The current United Wi‑Fi portal explicitly provides that recovery path. Do not repeatedly refresh a dead tab while remaining disconnected from the onboard network; reconnect first, then start a new session.

Check Private Relay and other traffic filters
Temporarily turn off iCloud Private Relay, reconnect to United Wi‑Fi, and run the portal again. In a 2025 hands-on report, TechRadar said United engineers advised that Private Relay could cause a Starlink connection to fail or become slow. Re-enable Private Relay after landing. Apply the same logic to any VPN, DNS-filtering profile, corporate security tunnel, or browser extension that intercepts traffic: pause it only long enough to authenticate, then restore it when you are back on a trusted network.
4. Fix an account or device-session problem
Another device is already using MileagePlus
United’s portal supports a Switch device function. Use it when your phone, tablet, or laptop is already associated with the active MileagePlus internet session. Switching moves the active internet plan to the new device. It does not create two simultaneous connections.
To use two devices at the same time, the portal says you need an additional guest purchase. If you only need to move the connection, choose Switch device instead of buying another session.

The United app opens but the handoff fails
Keep the United app updated enough to accept the portal handoff, then return to the browser and complete the flow there if the app does not finish. The app is convenient, but the captive portal can also be completed on the web. Make sure the browser is not blocking the page that the portal needs to open, and repeat the reconnect sequence after updating the app.
You want Starlink without MileagePlus
On equipped aircraft, United’s published offer is free Starlink Wi‑Fi for MileagePlus customers. The portal therefore asks for MileagePlus authentication during the Starlink flow. A free account can generally be created when the portal offers registration. If registration is unavailable, the page will not accept your credentials, or the flight is using conventional Wi‑Fi instead, ask the crew which access option is offered on that aircraft; do not treat the Starlink screen as proof that a paid plan is available.
Portable equipment will not create the service
A travel router, portable hotspot, USB Wi‑Fi adapter, or external antenna cannot manufacture Starlink access in the cabin. The satellite terminal, aircraft antenna, power, and cabin network are installed on the aircraft. Your device only joins the cabin network and authenticates through United’s portal.

5. Distinguish Starlink from conventional United Wi‑Fi

6. Use the symptom to choose the right fix
“The United Wi‑Fi network is missing”
- Confirm airplane mode is on and Wi‑Fi is manually enabled.
- Wait until the aircraft has reached the point at which the crew says Wi‑Fi is available; do not infer service from the aircraft being powered at the gate.
- Check the tracker and verify the exact aircraft, not merely the route.
- Ask a flight attendant whether the onboard network is temporarily disabled.
If several passengers cannot see the network, a passenger setting is unlikely to be the cause. The aircraft may have a power, antenna, satellite-link, or cabin-network problem.
“The portal keeps timing out”
- Reconnect to United Wi‑Fi and open a new browser window.
- Disable iCloud Private Relay, VPNs, and traffic-filtering profiles temporarily.
- Return to the portal homepage and retry the timeout recovery option.
- Verify that the flight is Starlink-equipped before expecting a Starlink login screen.
Repeated timeouts after those steps, especially when reported by other passengers, point toward an aircraft-side service problem.

- Check that you used the MileagePlus account intended for the flight.
- Use Switch device if another device holds the active session.
- Complete the advertisement, rules, and any app handoff instead of closing the page midway.
- Sign out of a stale portal tab, reconnect, and authenticate again.
“The app and browser disagree”
Finish the handoff in whichever surface remains responsive. If the app opens automatically but stalls, close it, reconnect to the network, and use a normal browser window. If the browser repeatedly redirects to the app, update the app and retry once; the service itself does not require a portable Starlink device or a second Wi‑Fi adapter.

7. Know when United has to fix it
No passenger setting can repair an aircraft antenna, satellite connection, onboard router, cabin power problem, or a service outage affecting the whole cabin. Escalate to the crew when:
- United Wi‑Fi never appears even though the tracker lists the aircraft as equipped.
- The portal is unavailable for multiple passengers.
- The network appears but repeatedly times out after a fresh reconnect and Private Relay/VPN check.
- The crew announces that onboard Wi‑Fi is out of service.
Ask whether Wi‑Fi is available or temporarily out of service and follow the crew’s instructions. Do not keep changing device settings once the problem is clearly shared across the cabin.
8. Report the failure after the flight
For unresolved problems, use United Customer Care’s request form after the trip; United’s support pages direct passengers to the Help Center and provide a customer-care request path. Include enough detail for United to identify the aircraft and session:

- Departure and arrival airports.
- Aircraft type or registration if the United app displayed it.
- Device model, operating system, and browser.
- Whether the network was visible.
- Whether you reached the portal, signed in to MileagePlus, used Switch device, or saw an advertisement.
- The exact timeout or error wording.
- Whether other passengers reported the same failure.
This information separates an authentication problem from a captive-portal problem and from an aircraft outage, which require different remedies.
9. A quick preflight checklist
- Check United’s Starlink Tracker for the specific aircraft.
- Know your MileagePlus login or create the free account before boarding.
- Update the United app, but keep a browser available.
- Know how to disable iCloud Private Relay temporarily if you use it.
- Close stale captive-portal tabs before joining the onboard network.
- Remember that Starlink availability is aircraft-specific during the rollout.
What the published rollout figures mean
United said its first Starlink-equipped regional flight operated in May 2025 and that more than half of its regional fleet had Starlink installed by October 14, 2025. In February 2026, United reported more than 300 regional aircraft equipped and projected more than 500 mainline aircraft by the end of that year. On June 22, 2026, flight 14 became the airline’s first transatlantic widebody customer flight with Starlink, with nearly 60 widebodies expected to receive the system during 2026. Those milestones explain why service can vary from one aircraft to the next even when the itinerary is identical.
