If two antivirus programs are installed on a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC, keep only one product with real-time protection. Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Manage providers to see which product Windows recognizes, choose the one you intend to keep, uninstall the other from Start > Settings > Apps, restart if prompted, and check the provider page again. Do not leave real-time protection disabled while switching.
Microsoft says that using more than one real-time security product can affect performance and can contribute to errors during updates or installations. The warning is qualitative; there is no reliable, universal percentage for how much a particular PC will slow down.
Why two antivirus programs can conflict
Real-time antivirus products inspect files when they are opened, downloaded, copied, or changed. They also monitor processes, network activity, browser behavior, and system locations used by installers and updates. When two products perform those jobs simultaneously, each can scan the other product’s files or repeatedly react to the same event.

Installing a second antivirus does not automatically provide twice the protection. Windows is designed to coordinate one registered real-time antivirus provider. A compatible non-Microsoft antivirus normally places Microsoft Defender Antivirus in a disabled mode while it is active. If that third-party product is removed, Defender should normally return to active mode.
First check which antivirus is actually active
The Windows Security app can be present even when Microsoft Defender Antivirus is not the active real-time provider. Use the provider list instead of guessing from the app icon or from the fact that Defender appears in the Start menu.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Under the protection area, select Manage providers.
- Record the antivirus provider shown as protecting the device and whether real-time protection is enabled.
If one provider is listed as active and another application is installed but not registered there, the installed application may be an on-demand scanner, a leftover component, or a product whose integration is damaged. Do not remove the active provider until you have decided what will replace it.
Choose one real-time product to keep
The immediate decision is not which product has the best detection score; the available Microsoft guidance does not establish current detection-rate, independent-lab, price, or licensing comparisons. The practical requirement is one compatible provider that updates correctly and works reliably on your computer.

- Keep the provider you trust and intend to maintain. Consider its update process, support, features you actually need, and renewal terms.
- Check registration in Windows Security. A product that is installed but not recognized as the provider may not be delivering real-time protection.
- Consider the computer’s behavior. If one product causes excessive resource use or false positives, update it and review its settings before deciding whether to keep it.
- Do not select two products as a compromise. Running both real-time engines is the configuration Microsoft advises against.
For many people, the simplest arrangement is Microsoft Defender Antivirus alone. Others may deliberately keep one compatible third-party antivirus. The important distinction is one active real-time engine, not the brand name.
How to remove the unwanted antivirus safely
Use Windows’ normal uninstall path first. Security software often installs drivers and services, so a complete removal and restart matter more than merely deleting a desktop shortcut.
- Save work and close open applications.
- Open Start > Settings > Apps.
- Find the antivirus or internet-security application you do not want to keep.
- Select the app, choose Uninstall, and follow every prompt from its uninstaller.
- Restart Windows if the uninstaller requests it. Restarting is also sensible when the product removed services or drivers, even if no prompt appears.
- After Windows starts, open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Manage providers again.
- Confirm that the provider you kept is listed and that its real-time protection is on.
Do not uninstall the only active provider and then postpone the verification step. Microsoft cautions that removing installed internet-security software can leave the PC unprotected if another antimalware product is not active. While real-time protection is off, files you open or download are not scanned. Windows may turn Defender real-time protection back on automatically after a short period, but treat that as a safeguard rather than something to rely on during the change.

What to do when Windows does not reactivate protection
After a compatible non-Microsoft antivirus is removed, Defender should normally return to active mode. An unusual or damaged installation may not behave perfectly, so check rather than assuming.

- Restart once more if the uninstaller removed components but Windows Security still shows an old status.
- Open the real-time protection controls in Windows Security and read the exact status message.
- Make sure the removed product no longer appears as the registered provider and that no second product is still enabled.
- If Defender remains disabled or the status is contradictory, use Microsoft’s support guidance or the remaining antivirus publisher’s support channel. Do not leave the computer in a known unprotected state while troubleshooting.
A Windows Security warning can also reflect a policy, a damaged installation, or a security product that did not uninstall completely. The provider page is the authoritative place to verify the current registration; the presence of an application folder is not.
If the antivirus will not uninstall
Some security products protect their own services and require a special removal procedure. If the uninstall entry fails, stops partway through, or returns the application after a restart:
- Run the uninstall command again from Settings > Apps and note any displayed error.
- Restart Windows and check whether the provider registration changed.
- Use the software publisher’s official support or removal instructions for that exact product and Windows version. Microsoft specifically advises contacting the publisher when its normal uninstall does not fully complete.
- After any publisher-provided removal tool finishes, restart and verify the provider in Windows Security.
Do not delete program folders, registry entries, or security drivers manually unless the publisher’s documented procedure tells you to. Removing files without removing the associated services can create a different set of startup and update problems.
Recognize the difference between real-time protection and on-demand scanners
Not every security utility installed on a PC is a competing real-time antivirus. Microsoft says that Microsoft Safety Scanner and Microsoft Defender Offline can coexist with a real-time product because they run only when requested or configured for a scheduled scan.

The coexistence rule depends on how the tool operates. A product marketed as an “extra scanner” may still install real-time shields, browser extensions, or network filters. Check its settings and the Manage providers page before assuming it is on-demand only.
Use symptoms to narrow down the problem

Reduce slowdowns after you have one provider
If the computer is still slow after removing the overlap, do not assume a second antivirus is still running. Microsoft recommends keeping third-party product versions and malware definitions current, checking whether unusually aggressive settings contribute to false positives or resource use, and contacting the antivirus vendor when the problem continues.
Update the product and definitions
Open the remaining antivirus’ update controls and install both application updates and current malware definitions. A stale engine can rescan files inefficiently or generate avoidable warnings. Restart afterward if the updater requests it, then observe whether the original symptom returns.
Review aggressive protection settings
Some products expose settings that increase inspection depth, archive scanning, behavior monitoring, or network filtering. If a slowdown began after a setting change, document the original value and consult the vendor’s guidance before reducing protection. Do not disable broad protections permanently simply to improve speed.

Use vendor support for persistent cases
Provide the vendor with the Windows version, product version, definition date, time of the slowdown, and the operation that triggers it. Microsoft’s detailed performance-tuning guidance includes enterprise-focused procedures; those advanced exclusions and diagnostic steps should not be treated as routine consumer fixes without appropriate expertise.
If you suspect malware while troubleshooting
A slow computer is not proof of infection, but malware concerns change the priority: establish a working protection provider and scan the system. Microsoft recommends updating applications and definitions before scanning.
- Run a quick scan with the active Windows security product.
- If the result or symptoms warrant deeper checking, start a full scan when you can tolerate reduced performance.
- Close nonessential applications before a full scan. Microsoft notes that a full scan can make the PC slower and may appear to freeze or hang; reducing other workload can help it complete.
- For threats that may hide while Windows is running, use Microsoft Defender Offline as an on-demand, reboot-based scan.
Keep one real-time provider active during normal use even if you also run an on-demand or offline scan.
A practical verification checklist
- Windows Security opens without a provider error.
- Virus & threat protection > Manage providers shows the single real-time antivirus you chose.
- Real-time protection is reported as on.
- The unwanted antivirus no longer appears as an active provider.
- The remaining product and its definitions are up to date.
- You restarted when the uninstaller or updater requested it.
- Any update or installation error is retested only after the provider configuration is stable.
If all six checks pass and the computer is still slow, the cause may be unrelated to antivirus overlap. Continue with the remaining provider’s diagnostics and support rather than installing a second real-time product as a test.
