Check the itemized bill, identify any mandatory service charge, tell the server or cashier that you are paying cash, and hand over the amount. Unless you say “keep the change,” wait for the difference and count it against the receipt before leaving. State separately whether any cash left beyond the bill is a voluntary tip.
If several people are paying, agree on each person’s amount before anyone hands over money. The group must cover the full bill, any mandatory charge, and whatever tip the group intentionally chooses.
Start by checking exactly what the bill includes
Read the itemized charges
Look at the items, subtotal, tax, and any line described as a service charge, gratuity, or auto-gratuity. A mandatory service charge is added to the bill before it is presented. It is not automatically the same thing as a voluntary tip.

Check that the number of diners, prices, discounts, and additions are correct. If something looks wrong, ask about it before counting out cash. Resolving an incorrect item before payment is easier than trying to reconstruct the bill later.

Decide what payment arrangement you are using
Before money changes hands, decide whether one person will pay everything, whether diners will pay separate amounts, or whether cash will be combined with a card payment. Use the arrangement that matches what the restaurant can process.

Prepare the cash
Count the notes and coins where you can see them. If you intend to pay the exact amount, include coins rather than assuming the restaurant will round the total. The Federal Trade Commission advises bringing coins from home when you plan to pay cash so you can pay exact change if possible.
How to pay the bill with cash
- Confirm the final amount. Use the total on the current bill, not an earlier estimate. Include tax and any mandatory service charge.
- Tell the staff clearly. Say, “I’ll pay in cash.” If the check is shared, say the amount you are covering before handing over the money. This prevents staff from treating your cash as a partial, unexplained payment.
- Hand over the cash and identify your intention. If you want change, say, “I’ll need change, please.” If you are giving an exact tip in addition to the bill, identify it as a tip rather than leaving staff to guess.
- Wait for the transaction to be completed. Do not walk away while the server or cashier is still counting the money or preparing the receipt. Unless you explicitly said “keep the change,” the normal expectation is that the difference comes back to you.
- Count the returned money. Compare the change with the amount you handed over and the amount due. Count it before leaving the payment area, while the transaction is easy to correct.
- Check the receipt. Make sure the written or electronic receipt shows the right items, total, payment amount, change, service charge, and any tip that was recorded.
- Keep the receipt. Retain it until you have confirmed the transaction and no further correction is needed.
Does the change become a tip?
No. Cash payment does not turn change into a tip automatically. If the bill is $42 and you hand over $50 without saying anything, the staff should normally return the $8 difference unless the restaurant has clearly communicated a different procedure and you agree to it.

- You want the change: “Please bring back the change.”
- You want to leave the change as a tip: “Keep the change as my tip.”
- You want only part of the change as a tip: “Please bring back $5 and leave the rest as the tip.”
- You are paying an exact tip separately: “The bill is covered; this additional cash is the tip.”
The Internal Revenue Service defines a tip this way: “A payment is a tip only if the customer voluntarily decides to pay it and determines the amount.” A mandatory charge printed on the bill does not become voluntary merely because you paid the bill in cash.

How to split a restaurant bill when one person pays cash
Agree on the allocation first
Decide whether the group is splitting equally, assigning each person’s own items, or having one person pay the total and collect from everyone else. Include shared appetizers, tax, service charges, and the group’s chosen tip in the calculation.

State every amount before payment
Tell the server, for example, “I’m paying $30 cash, Alex is paying $25 by card, and the remaining $18.40 will be on Jordan’s card.” Wait for staff to confirm the plan. Do not place an unlabeled pile of cash on the table and expect the restaurant to infer who owes what.
When one person pays the whole bill in cash, that person should first verify the total and then collect the other diners’ shares separately. If the group intends to tip, decide whether the tip is included in each person’s share or added by the payer after the bill is settled. The combined payments must cover the full restaurant balance; an agreed personal share is not enough if it leaves tax, a service charge, or the intended tip unpaid.
Handle rounding openly
If an equal split produces fractions of a cent or awkward coin amounts, agree who will cover the rounding difference before payment. Say the final amounts aloud and have someone check that they add up to the exact bill plus the intended tip.

Service charge, auto-gratuity, and voluntary tip are different
Mandatory service charge
A service charge is a required amount added to the bill. It may be described as a service fee, service charge, or auto-gratuity. Read the wording and amount on the bill rather than assuming it follows a particular tipping custom.
Voluntary tip
A voluntary tip is an extra payment you choose and set. You can leave it in cash even if the bill was paid another way, or hand cash to the server after paying the total. Make clear that the extra amount is intentional.
When both appear
If a mandatory charge is already listed, ask what it covers before adding more. The bill may explain whether it is distributed to staff or used for another purpose. Do not describe the charge as your voluntary tip unless the restaurant confirms that treatment.

Why you should ask for and keep a receipt
A receipt gives you a record of the items, tax, charges, payment, and change. It also helps if you need to question a duplicate charge, an incorrect total, or an amount that was not returned.

Ask for a paper receipt or an electronic receipt, depending on what the restaurant offers. If you decline a receipt where local rules permit that, write down the date, restaurant, total, and payment method while the details are fresh. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission notes that a cash-register docket, receipt, or bill can serve as proof of purchase when seeking a remedy. U.S. Federal Trade Commission consumer guidance likewise recommends keeping transaction details and receipts to help resolve billing mistakes.

The change is short
Raise the issue immediately and calmly: “I gave you $60 for a $47.35 bill, so I expected $12.65 back.” Show the receipt and, if possible, the notes or coins you received. Ask the server or cashier to recount the drawer transaction.
The change is more than expected
Return the excess before leaving. An overpayment can create confusion during the restaurant’s reconciliation, and correcting it immediately protects both sides.
The bill contains an unexplained charge
Ask whether it is tax, a mandatory service charge, a deposit, or an error. Do not add a voluntary tip until you understand the printed charge. If the explanation is unsatisfactory, request a manager and keep the receipt.

The restaurant cannot resolve the problem
Record the date, time, location, total, staff explanation, and payment details. Keep the receipt and any electronic confirmation. Consumer remedies and complaint procedures depend on the jurisdiction, so avoid assuming that one country’s receipt or cash rules apply elsewhere.
Cash acceptance and receipts depend on location
There is no single worldwide rule covering whether every restaurant must accept cash, which denominations it may refuse, or when it must issue a receipt. Requirements can differ between countries, states, territories, municipalities, and restaurant policies. Tax treatment, receipt obligations, and tipping customs also vary.
The practical approach is to check the restaurant’s posted payment policy or ask before ordering if you plan to use a large denomination or a mixed payment. If cash is refused or a denomination is not accepted, ask which payment methods are available and obtain a receipt for whichever method you use.

Worked examples
Example: cash with change returned
The printed total is $68.40, including tax and a mandatory service charge. You hand over $100 and say, “Please bring back the change; I’ll decide on the tip after I check it.” The expected change is $31.60. After receiving it, count the notes and coins, verify the receipt, and then hand over any voluntary tip separately if you choose.
Example: keeping only part of the change
The total is $51.25 and you give the cashier $60. You say, “Please return $5 and leave $3.75 as the tip.” The cashier should return the stated amount, and the receipt should show the bill and any tip the restaurant records.
Example: a three-person split
The final bill is $ ninety? Wait—avoid malformed numbers. Let’s set $ ninety? Better use $90.00. Three diners agree to pay $30 each. One person hands over $30 cash, the second pays $30 by card, and the third pays $30 by card. They tell the server all three amounts before processing and confirm that the $90 total includes the group’s agreed treatment of any service charge and tip.
