Back up every important file you can still read to a different device immediately. A SMART warning means the drive has reported a meaningful failure risk, even if the computer still starts and the drive appears normal. After your data is safe, follow the drive maker’s diagnostic guidance and replace the drive if it reports a critical or predictive failure or fails its diagnostic test.

If the drive clicks, beeps, or will not spin, stop running tests. When the files matter, contact a professional data-recovery service before attempting further diagnostics.

1. Treat the warning as urgent, not as a precise countdown

Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology (SMART) records health indicators inside a hard drive or solid-state drive and can signal that failure risk has risen. It does not provide a dependable clock telling you that the drive has a certain number of hours or days left. Seagate notes that a drive may continue to function normally after a SMART error and that some diagnostic tests may still pass.

That combination is why a passing test does not cancel a SMART warning. The sensible interpretation is “protect the data now, then investigate,” not “the drive is guaranteed to die today” or “the warning can be ignored.” Western Digital’s support guidance describes SMART errors as a signal to back up and replace the drive, and says a drive that has produced SMART errors or failures should not be used for data storage.

2. Follow this order of operations

  1. Identify the affected physical drive. Note the model, capacity, and any identifier shown by the firmware, operating system, or warning message. A named volume is not always the computer’s boot drive, and one physical drive can contain several volumes.
  2. Copy irreplaceable, accessible files first. Use another physical device or another suitable backup destination. Start with personal documents, photos, project files, databases, encryption keys, password-vault exports, and anything that cannot be recreated.
  3. Stop if there are physical-failure symptoms. Clicking, repeated beeping, or a drive that does not spin requires a different path: stop diagnostics and seek professional recovery advice if the data is important.
  4. After the backup, run the manufacturer’s approved checks. Use the drive maker’s support instructions and utility rather than treating a generic SMART reader as the final authority.
  5. Replace the drive when the maker reports a critical or predictive failure, or when its diagnostic test fails. Check warranty eligibility separately; a replacement shipment does not recover the files on the old drive.

3. Secure the data without making the drive work harder

Copying files from a failing drive can be slow or produce read errors. Begin with the most valuable data and work in manageable groups so a single stalled folder does not prevent you from saving everything else. Keep the destination on a different physical device; copying to another partition on the same failing disk does not protect against that disk’s failure.

Do not spend the initial response window running long surface scans, repeated self-tests, firmware experiments, or “repair” utilities before the backup is complete. Manufacturer guidance from Western Digital and Seagate puts backup first. If the system remains usable, avoid unnecessary reboots and heavy workloads while the copy is in progress, but do not keep using the drive as a normal storage device after a SMART failure has been reported.

If a file cannot be read, record its name and continue with other high-priority files rather than repeatedly retrying one item for hours. When the unreadable material is more valuable than the accessible files, stop and obtain professional recovery advice instead of escalating software tests yourself.

4. Know when to stop all diagnostics

Clicking, beeping, or no spin

Seagate’s openSeaChest documentation advises stopping and contacting a professional recovery service when a drive clicks, beeps, or does not spin. These symptoms can indicate a physical problem for which repeated power cycles and diagnostics may reduce the chance of successful recovery. Disconnect the drive, preserve its current state, and tell the recovery provider exactly what happened, including when the SMART warning first appeared and whether the drive was dropped, overheated, or exposed to liquid.

Normal sounds versus failure sounds

Routine seeking or brief startup noise is not enough to diagnose a failure. The decisive combination is a SMART warning plus unusual repeated clicking, beeping, or failure to reach operating speed. In that situation, the data-preservation decision takes priority over obtaining another test result.

5. Understand what SMART attributes actually mean

SMART is not one universal score. Western Digital explains that manufacturers define their own attributes and thresholds, while raw values have vendor-specific meanings. Seagate likewise notes that threshold details differ among manufacturers, drive designs, and models. A raw counter from a third-party monitoring application therefore cannot be interpreted safely by applying a generic internet chart to every drive.

Examples of areas a drive may monitor include read retries, slow spin-up, temperature, and excessive bad sectors. The same attribute name can have different encoding, units, or trigger levels on another design. Use the manufacturer’s explanation for the exact model when deciding whether a status is critical.

What you see What it establishes Appropriate response
SMART failure or predictive-failure status The drive has crossed the maker’s risk criteria; it may still appear to work Back up immediately and plan replacement; do not keep it as a storage drive
A manufacturer diagnostic test fails The maker’s test has found a condition requiring replacement Replace the drive and use the old one only as needed for controlled recovery
High average-temperature warning only Seagate identifies a narrow case that may improve when ventilation is corrected Inspect airflow and fans, lower the average temperature, then reassess; persistent or unrelated SMART failures still require replacement
Clicking, beeping, or no spin A severe physical symptom that changes the recovery procedure Stop diagnostics and seek professional recovery help before further attempts

6. Run the drive maker’s diagnostics after the backup

Seagate drives

Seagate identifies SeaTools as a utility that can test SMART parameters and other drive conditions. Use the version and procedure specified for your drive and operating system. Run tests only after important files are protected, and save the exact result or error code. A failed SeaTools test means the drive needs replacement according to Seagate’s guidance.

Western Digital drives

Western Digital describes short and extended drive self-tests. A short test can provide an initial check; an extended test takes longer and examines more of the drive. Follow the current instructions for the exact model and record whether the result is a pass, warning, or failure. A pass does not erase the significance of an earlier SMART failure warning, because Seagate notes that some diagnostics can pass while a drive remains at risk.

Other manufacturers

Use the support page and diagnostic utility provided for that manufacturer and model. Avoid changing SMART thresholds or forcing a generic “repair” based solely on a raw value. The manufacturer controls the attribute definitions and failure criteria for its design.

7. Decide whether a temperature warning is an exception

Seagate describes excessive average temperature as a limited situation in which correcting ventilation can sometimes clear the warning. Check that intake and exhaust openings are unobstructed, fans are operating, and dust is not blocking airflow. In a desktop, verify that the drive bay is not pressed against a heat source; in a laptop or compact system, make sure vents are not covered during use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Lowering temperature is not a general cure for SMART problems. It does not repair bad sectors, read-retry problems, spin-up faults, or other attributes, and it is not a reason to ignore a critical or persistent failure status. Protect the data first, then determine whether the warning was solely temperature-related and whether it stays clear under normal operation.

8. Replace the failed drive correctly

Choose a compatible replacement drive rather than a specific model based only on the SMART message. Confirm the physical form factor and interface supported by the computer, then select adequate capacity for the operating system and data. Consider whether the replacement is intended for a laptop, desktop, external enclosure, or another system, and review the manufacturer’s warranty terms.

  • Form factor: the replacement must physically fit the bay or enclosure.
  • Interface: it must use the connection supported by the computer or adapter.
  • Capacity: allow room for the operating system, applications, and working data.
  • Intended use: match the drive to the system’s workload and portability requirements.
  • Warranty: verify eligibility with the drive maker, but treat warranty service as hardware replacement, not file recovery.

Before removing the old drive, confirm that the backup opens from the destination and contains the files you expect. If the old disk is still readable, keep it disconnected except during controlled recovery or transfer. Do not return, recycle, or erase it until you have decided that no further recovery is needed.

9. What a SMART warning does not justify

  • Do not claim a guaranteed remaining lifespan. Vendor guidance describes near-term risk, not an exact failure time.
  • Do not treat a single raw number as universal. Attribute meanings and thresholds vary by manufacturer and design.
  • Do not continue normal storage use. Western Digital says drives with SMART errors or failures should not be used for data storage.
  • Do not assume a diagnostic pass makes the warning harmless. A drive can appear functional and still be at risk.
  • Do not confuse replacement with recovery. A warranty exchange supplies another drive; it does not copy inaccessible data from the original.
  • Do not repeatedly power-cycle a mechanically symptomatic drive. Clicking, beeping, or no spin calls for professional recovery guidance first.

10. A practical decision checklist

Use this checklist when you need a fast, defensible response:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Write down the exact SMART message and the physical drive it identifies.
  2. Determine whether the drive is still readable and whether it is making clicking or beeping sounds.
  3. For a quiet, readable drive, copy the highest-value files to a different physical device or suitable backup destination.
  4. For clicking, beeping, or no spin, stop and contact a professional recovery service if the data matters.
  5. Once the backup is protected, open the manufacturer’s support instructions and run its approved diagnostic utility.
  6. Save the test result and any error code.
  7. Replace the drive after a critical or predictive SMART status or a failed manufacturer test.
  8. If the only issue is excessive average temperature, correct airflow and monitor whether that specific warning clears; do not dismiss other failure signals.
  9. Verify the backup before disposing of, returning, or reusing the old drive.

11. The key distinction: warning versus confirmation

A SMART warning is an early risk signal, not proof that every sector is already unreadable. That distinction explains why you may still be able to copy files and why a diagnostic may report a pass. It does not make the warning optional. The safe policy is to act while access remains available, use the manufacturer’s criteria after the backup, and retire a drive that is classified as critically failing or diagnostically bad.
