If Siri will not play Spotify, make the destination explicit: say “Hey Siri, play [song, playlist, artist, album, or podcast] on Spotify.” If Siri sends the request to another service, add “on Spotify” at the end. Then update Spotify, restart the device, and retry with the item’s exact name. If Siri is failing for every request—not just Spotify—check the internet connection, Siri setup, device software, and VPN configuration.
Start with the exact Spotify command
Siri can handle Spotify requests for songs, albums, artists, playlists, podcasts, mood or activity listening, and playback controls when the request is supported on your device. Spotify’s documented pattern is to name the content and the destination in one sentence.
- Say “Hey Siri, play my Discover Weekly playlist on Spotify.”
- For a single track, say “Hey Siri, play [song title] by [artist] on Spotify.”
- For a podcast, say “Hey Siri, play [podcast name] on Spotify.”
- For controls, say a command such as “Hey Siri, pause Spotify” or “Hey Siri, skip this song on Spotify.”
If Siri chooses a different playback app, repeat the request and append “on Spotify.” Spotify gives this as its specific fix for wrong-app routing: “If Siri plays from a different app, add ‘on Spotify’ to the end.” Source: Spotify Support: Siri and Spotify.
Update Spotify and restart your device
An outdated app or a temporary handoff problem can make an otherwise valid Siri request fail. Spotify’s support guidance is to install the latest Spotify version, restart the phone, and try again.

- Open the App Store, tap your account picture, and install any available Spotify update.
- Restart the iPhone or iPad using the device’s normal power controls.
- Open Spotify once, confirm that it can play audio normally, and then try the Siri command again.
Spotify states the sequence directly: “Make sure you have the latest version of Spotify, then restart your phone and try your request again.” This step addresses the Spotify integration; it will not repair a Siri problem that affects every app.
Ask for a named item instead of asking Siri to resume
Siri may not know which Spotify session or queue you mean, especially after the app has been closed or another audio source was used. Name the item explicitly rather than saying only “play my music” or “resume.” Include the playlist, song, album, artist, or podcast title. For example:
- “Play my Release Radar playlist on Spotify.”
- “Play the album [album title] on Spotify.”
- “Play [artist] on Spotify.”
- “Play the latest episode of [podcast] on Spotify.”
If a title is ambiguous, add the artist or show name. A specific request gives Siri both the content and the intended service to pass to Spotify.

Identify whether the fault is Spotify routing or Siri itself
The next step depends on what Siri does when you speak. Use the symptom that matches your case.

This split prevents you from changing Siri settings when the only problem is that Siri was not told which app to use. Conversely, repeating Spotify commands will not fix a microphone, internet, or system-level Siri failure.
Check Siri’s connection and setup when every request fails
Apple’s troubleshooting sequence applies when Siri is not responding generally. Work through these checks in order:

- Verify internet access. Open a web page or another online service on the same device. Siri needs a working connection to process requests and reach online content.
- Confirm Siri is enabled. Open Settings and locate the Siri controls. Depending on the iOS release, the menu is labeled Siri or Apple Intelligence & Siri.
- Check listening and voice setup. In the Siri settings, verify the options that allow “Hey Siri” and spoken responses, then complete the voice setup again if the device no longer recognizes your voice.
- Install the latest device software offered for your model. Apple lists software updates among the standard checks for a non-working Siri.
- Restart and test Siri with a simple request. Ask for a basic task before testing Spotify. If Siri still does not answer, the problem is not Spotify-specific.
- Inspect VPN settings. Apple warns that some VPN profiles may not allow Siri. If Siri settings disappear after a restart or Siri remains unavailable, review the installed VPN configuration and test without a profile that blocks Siri.

Find the right Siri menu on your iOS version
Instructions written for one iOS release may use a different label on another. Apple documents Siri preferences under either Siri or Apple Intelligence & Siri. Use the Settings search field for “Siri” if you do not see either label immediately.
Regional and language support also matters. Siri features, voice options, and commands are not identical in every language or country. Apple’s general music guide demonstrates Apple Music and Apple Podcasts actions; those examples do not guarantee that the same wording will route to Spotify. For Spotify-specific commands, follow Spotify’s current support instructions rather than assuming an Apple Music example is interchangeable.

Check compatibility and availability limits
Spotify’s current Siri guide lists these supported contexts:

These requirements are tied to Spotify’s support page and can change as operating systems and regional rollouts change. Check the live page for the requirement that applies to your device: Spotify Support: Siri and Spotify. Where the Apple Intelligence Siri path is unavailable, Spotify says you can append “on Spotify” to the request instead.

Apple says Siri availability, features, and command behavior vary by language, country, and region. A command that works in one locale may be unavailable or use a different voice trigger in another. Regional restrictions can also affect the Apple Intelligence route described by Spotify.

When troubleshooting, keep the device language and Siri language in mind. If a feature is not offered for your language or location, changing the wording alone will not enable it. Use the standard explicit destination phrase where Spotify supports it, and consult the live Spotify and Apple support pages for current regional coverage.
Use a short diagnostic routine
Run this routine after the initial command fails:
- Open Spotify and play any track manually. This confirms the app can start playback.
- Ask Siri for a specifically named Spotify item, ending with “on Spotify.”
- If Siri selects another service, repeat the same request with the destination phrase; do not omit the app name.
- If Siri does not respond, test a non-music request. A failure there points to Siri, connectivity, software, or VPN rather than Spotify routing.
- Update Spotify, restart the device, and repeat the named-item request.
- Check Siri’s settings label, voice setup, device software, and VPN profile if non-music Siri requests also fail.
Record what happens at each point—no response, wrong app, vague content, or Spotify playback error. That symptom is more useful than repeatedly changing unrelated settings.
Common mistakes that make the problem look worse
- Leaving out the destination: “Play jazz” does not tell Siri to use Spotify. Add “on Spotify.”
- Using only a resume command: Siri may not know which item to resume. Say the exact title.
- Assuming Apple’s examples are Spotify commands: Apple’s music documentation focuses on Apple Music and Apple Podcasts; Spotify has its own supported wording.
- Ignoring software age: An old Spotify build or old device software can prevent expected integration behavior.
- Changing settings when Siri works elsewhere: If Siri answers other requests, begin with app routing and Spotify’s update/restart advice.
- Overlooking VPN restrictions: A VPN profile can interfere with Siri even when other internet services appear normal.
When to use the official support pages
Use Spotify’s page for the exact Spotify command, supported content types, device requirements, and current Apple Intelligence limitations. Use Apple’s Siri troubleshooting page when Siri does not hear or answer general requests. Apple’s music guide is useful for understanding general Siri playback behavior, but it should not be treated as a Spotify-specific compatibility list.

For a Spotify-only routing problem, the fastest reliable sequence is: name the content, say “on Spotify,” update Spotify, restart the device, and try again.
